,‘You can never lose in business’, said Prof Sunil Handa inthe Laboratory in Entrepreneurial Motivation (LEM) atSPJIMRSPJIMR, Mumbai, December 15, 2012- Dr. Sunil Handa, a professor at IIM Ahmedabad and amotivational speaker on entrepreneurship, stirred the participants at SPJIMR through his charismaduring a power packed Workshop in 'Laboratory in Entrepreneurial Motivation'. His straight forwardapproach to entrepreneurship struck a chord with the students, many of whom were aspiringentrepreneurs, when he talked about defying the established paradigms of placements and seven figuresalaries. With anecdotes galore of his numerous students who have established multimillion dollarenterprises, he talked about the good, the bad and the ugly side of entrepreneurship.His first message to the audience was to ‘Never jump the gun’. He said that an entrepreneur shouldchoose a field that he or she desires. But, it is vital to gain knowledge about the sector and the industry.Substantiating, Prof Handa gave the example of his own pharmaceutical company. Being an electricalengineer himself, he had little idea of the pharma industry when he started out. But the drive to learnmade it possible. He couldn’t have emphasized more, that perseverance and hard work are the twomost important characteristics of a budding entrepreneur. He then advised the audience to always startwith the manageable and to remain mindful of the cutbacks one needs to put in place when starting abusiness.Prof Handa emphasized on how one’s work ethics are the primary source of credibility and motivationfor the customers as well as the employees. He said it doesn’t take time for ill processes and fraud toleak through the walls of the company or its balance sheets to reach out to the stakeholders. If wedestroy the milieu that we grow in or if we do not gain respect from what we do, it is not worth doing.He wrapped up the session with a very strong message which resonated with the aspiring entrepreneursof SPJIMR – “You can never lose in business”. Participants did seek answers to a lot of queries at this.But, he embellished his statement with a comprehensive elaboration, saying that if one keeps an eye onthe market trends, customer reviews and takes rational decisions, under normal circumstances, there isa little chance that you commit an unrecoverable blunder.
