,‘You <strong>can</strong> <strong>never</strong> <strong>lose</strong> <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess’, <strong>said</strong> <strong>Prof</strong> <strong>Sunil</strong> <strong>Handa</strong> <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> Laboratory <strong>in</strong> Entrepreneurial Motivation (LEM) atSPJIMRSPJIMR, Mumbai, December 15, 2012- Dr. <strong>Sunil</strong> <strong>Handa</strong>, a professor at IIM Ahmedabad and amotivational speaker on entrepreneurship, stirred <strong>the</strong> participants at SPJIMR through his charismadur<strong>in</strong>g a power packed Workshop <strong>in</strong> 'Laboratory <strong>in</strong> Entrepreneurial Motivation'. His straight forwardapproach to entrepreneurship struck a chord with <strong>the</strong> students, many of whom were aspir<strong>in</strong>gentrepreneurs, when he talked about defy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> established paradigms of placements and seven figuresalaries. With anecdotes galore of his numerous students who have established multimillion dollarenterprises, he talked about <strong>the</strong> good, <strong>the</strong> bad and <strong>the</strong> ugly side of entrepreneurship.His first message to <strong>the</strong> audience was to ‘Never jump <strong>the</strong> gun’. He <strong>said</strong> that an entrepreneur shouldchoose a field that he or she desires. But, it is vital to ga<strong>in</strong> knowledge about <strong>the</strong> sector and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry.Substantiat<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>Prof</strong> <strong>Handa</strong> gave <strong>the</strong> example of his own pharmaceutical company. Be<strong>in</strong>g an electricaleng<strong>in</strong>eer himself, he had little idea of <strong>the</strong> pharma <strong>in</strong>dustry when he started out. But <strong>the</strong> drive to learnmade it possible. He couldn’t have emphasized more, that perseverance and hard work are <strong>the</strong> twomost important characteristics of a budd<strong>in</strong>g entrepreneur. He <strong>the</strong>n advised <strong>the</strong> audience to always startwith <strong>the</strong> manageable and to rema<strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>dful of <strong>the</strong> cutbacks one needs to put <strong>in</strong> place when start<strong>in</strong>g abus<strong>in</strong>ess.<strong>Prof</strong> <strong>Handa</strong> emphasized on how one’s work ethics are <strong>the</strong> primary source of credibility and motivationfor <strong>the</strong> customers as well as <strong>the</strong> employees. He <strong>said</strong> it doesn’t take time for ill processes and fraud toleak through <strong>the</strong> walls of <strong>the</strong> company or its balance sheets to reach out to <strong>the</strong> stakeholders. If wedestroy <strong>the</strong> milieu that we grow <strong>in</strong> or if we do not ga<strong>in</strong> respect from what we do, it is not worth do<strong>in</strong>g.He wrapped up <strong>the</strong> session with a very strong message which resonated with <strong>the</strong> aspir<strong>in</strong>g entrepreneursof SPJIMR – “You <strong>can</strong> <strong>never</strong> <strong>lose</strong> <strong>in</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess”. Participants did seek answers to a lot of queries at this.But, he embellished his statement with a comprehensive elaboration, say<strong>in</strong>g that if one keeps an eye on<strong>the</strong> market trends, customer reviews and takes rational decisions, under normal circumstances, <strong>the</strong>re isa little chance that you commit an unrecoverable blunder.
