IELA EVENTS WINTER SEMINAR 2013http://www.sxc.huWINTER SEMINAR 2013 – January 16 th to 20 th – ZurichBUILDING THE FUTUREPost Event ReportThe 2013 Winter Seminar continuedits established history of providingIELA members’ operations staff withan exciting, memorable experience. The Winter Seminar was heldJanuary 16 th – 20 th , again in Zurich,Switzerland. IELA’s experience fromprevious Winter Seminars trulyinfluenced the unique character ofthis year’s edition as classroomsessions and networkingopportunities ignited a specialsynergy among the studentparticipants. The 2013 Winter Seminar was attended by 29 students from 21 IELA member companies andrepresented 15 countries. This worldwide coverage certainly added a varied, multi-national andinteresting elements to the discussions and educational process. The students’ work experienceranged from new-to-the business to seasoned veteran. As in previous Winter Seminar formats (which has also become typical for most IELA events), thefirst evening began with a welcoming reception to allow students, presenters and Board membersan opportunity to mingle and get to know each other. This process of greeting everyone wascontinued the following morning when the now well-established “speed dating” session provideda formal structure of face-to-face discussions. Students were allowed 4 minutes to speak with afellow student participant before moving on to the next person. Within a short period of time, allstudents had an opportunity to talk individually with one another. Remarkably, once again thestudents remarked on their evaluation form that the speed dating session was a favorite amongall other activities. In addition to the “speed dating” session were a number of demanding classroom style seminarsfrom Thursday through Saturday afternoon. All presentations were a combination of lecture timeand student participation exercises. Topics included: the History of IELA that was presented by BobMoore, Application of Tariffs presented by Achim Lotzwick, Marketing presented by Kay Lohe, IELAStandards and Practices presented by Mariane Ewbank, Domestic/Site Agent Responsibilitiespresented by Emmanuel Pitchelu, Export Agent Responsibilities presented by Jim Callaghan, andthe 3-part Customs Workshop featuring the USA, India and China presented respectively by BradWatson, Ravinder Sethi and Lisa Xu. As a guest speaker, Hellmut Sito Schlingensiepen provided aunique presentation “Corporate Visual Recognition.” IELA was also honored to have Petra Lassahnof Reed Exhibitions Germany as a presenter for the first time at a Winter Seminar (see side article).12IELAREPORT71

IELA EVENTS}IELA EVENTS - WINTER SEMINAR 2013All presenters were urged to deliver their topics in a highly interactive format and to involvestudent participation as much as possible. The half-day Customs Workshop provided an in-depthexploration into customs and handling issues in the USA, India and China. The students were dividedinto 3 country groups to examine and solve a case study project on their assigned area of the world. Then each group presented their findings to the remaining audience and answered questionsrelating to their solution. The brainstorming the evening before the Friday morning workshop byeach group also became a tremendous networking experience as everyone began realizingsimilarities and differences in their job responsibilities regardless of the part of the world they werecoming from. Another highlight of the Winter Seminar was an excursion around the ZurichFairgrounds with a close look at the logistical environment during the build-up of a major tradeshow in this important exhibition complex. The tour was directed by Daniel Bataller, the managerof Gondrand’s exhibition department in Zurich – and the local IELA member. Dani also supplied atremendous amount of support to the success of the Winter Seminar by coordinating all meetingroom arrangements, students’ housing needs, lunch requirements and the day-in-the-snowarrangement. His assistance contributed very much to the overall success of the event and IELAowes him a gracious thank you for his efforts. All students were given an exam as a final exercise and review at the Winter Seminar. The studentwith the highest score on this exam is also awarded as the “Best Student” of the event. This year’srecipient of the honor of being named Best Student is Mohd Rasyid Bin Abdullah of R.E. Rogers(Malaysia). We applaud Rasyid for his efforts and accomplishment. And we look forward to meetinghim as our guest at an IELA General Assembly in Munich in June. tJim KeltyWinter Seminar Team}} Daniel Bataller & Jim KeltyIELA}}REPORT7113

Bhd.! Our sincere congratulationsto Rasyid for his terrific efforts andparticipation at the Winter Seminar."We are truly proud of Rasyid and his involvementat this year’s Winter Seminar and lookforward to welcoming him as our guest at theIELA General Assembly in Munich in June," saidRobert Moore, IELA Chairman. "There were highmarks from a large number of the students, which is an indication of the quality of thisyear’s entire class. These are the IELA leadersof the future and I am particularly proud of allof them."The Winter Seminar is IELA’s training event forits members´ operational staff and held everytwo years in Zurich, Switzerland. Twenty-ninestudents completed the 2013 course. The next IELA WINTER SEMINAR willtake place in January 2015. tThe students at the 2013 IELA Winter Seminar were honored with the inclusion of a very specialpresentation by Ms. Petra Lassahn of Reed Exhibitions Germany. This was Petra’s first time to beinvolved in an IELA event and we were extremely grateful for her efforts, experience and insights. From their high marks and follow-up comments, the students found her presentation enlighteningand extremely helpful in understanding the expectations of today’s organizers and exhibitors alike. The 90-minute presentation and exercise was entitled “Success Factors For Exhibitors.” Petrabegan with a very detailed description of the exhibition world, the types of events and all playersinvolved. This part of the program examined the origins and basic definitions of exhibitions – actuallystarting from medieval times through their development as selling events and then into moderntimes reflecting the technological dynamism of the industrial revolution. She also explained themany different types of exhibitions and the criteria and characteristics of each.In the exhibition world, what do the different market players expect? This was a question thatwas carefully and methodically answered in the remaining part of the lecture by discussing thenew and increased demands of today’s and future exhibitors.Following the lecture, half of the students were asked to discuss their ideas for a successfulexhibition from the exhibitor’s perspective. The other half of the class had the same directive – butto approach it from the organizer’s perspective. This exercise required the students to devise acomplex plan with all activities from pre-show preparation through to post-show evaluation. Thesession concluded with both groups outlining their results involving all of the market players in theexhibition business and recommendations to address the ever-changing demands for success inour industry. The students were very attentive and their results quite intriguing. Our thanks to Petra Lassahn for her wonderful contribution to this year’s Winter Seminar. t14IELA}}REPORT71

28 th IELA CONGRESS & 2 nd PARTNERING EVENT MUNICH MarienplatzWELCOME TO THE CITY OF MUNICHMunich is no coincidence the “cosmopolitancity with a heart” which attracts visitors likeno other big European city. It is the perfectopportunity for you to combine business withpleasure during your stay at the IELAcongress. Shopping and sightseeing, arts andculture, parks and castles, lakes andpanoramas, beer gardens and gourmetrestaurants: Munich and its surrounding areahas everything. The following information will help you toplan and prepare your stay during the IELACongress & Partnering Event. We hope youwill have a great time here and look forwardto seeing you in Munich! Here we goWhether on foot or leisurely via tram: we will gladly show you the city. It takes some doing toexplore Munich in just a few hours. We have created short and straight-forward tours for you sothat you can experience as much as possible in Munich during your precious free time beyond theIELA congress. We have included the most important places of interest, shopping opportunitiesand beautiful sights in Bavaria’s capital. The tours described are designed to wet your appetite toreturn to Munich. We are confident that you will visit “the city with heart” again.Anyone who has become a resident of Munich does everything in his power to remain here. And once you get to know Munich, you will understand why. After all, Munich unites the easygoingBavarian “Gemütlichkeit” you will find in the shade of a beer garden’s chestnut tree with thehustle and bustle the city is known for. What’s more, the peaks of the Alps seem just on theoutskirts of town every time the “Föhn” blows (a warm, dry wind from the south). One cannot accurately do justice to the heart and soul of Munich by plainly portraying it asthe capital of Bavaria, as an economic powerhouse, as a hub for trade fairs and conferences, asa magnet for students with its three universities, as the home of Germany’s Federal Fiscal Courtas well as the patent courts for Germany and for all of Europe, and as the home town of CarlSpitzweg, Karl Valentin and Richard Strauss. Granted, all of that may explain why more than amillion people live here near the Isar River – close to the shoal through which salt caravanstraveled from Reichenhall to Augsburg thousands of years ago. But if you want to comprehendwhy people love living here so much, we advise you to embark on a journey of discovery. Andfall in love with Munich!IELAREPORT7119

MUNICH28 th IELA CONGRESS & 2 nd PARTNERING EVENTWelcome to our cityGEMÜTLICHKEITThere is a word which aptly describes the Bavarian way of life: “Gemütlichkeit”. Unfortunatelythere is no fitting synonym. Relaxation, peace, satisfaction…. none of these words come close.“Gemütlichkeit” can’t really be translated into English either. That’s presumably because this is nota definition or expression we’re talking about, but an emotion. We’ll try to describe it. Imagine awarm summer evening, sitting on plain wooden benches under centuries-old chestnut trees in thecompany of your closest friends and a cool mug of beer. It’s the simple things that count. It doesn’tmatter who has achieved more or who is better-educated. It’s also irrelevant who is wealthier ormore beautiful. Here you can just be yourself. And if you look around in a Bavarian beer garden, then you will find that this feeling isomnipresent. Hundreds of people from all walks of life and different religions, in elegant businesssuits or in flip-flops and shorts, all sitting peacefully and harmoniously side by side, enjoying thisexact same feeling of simply being here. We’re looking forward to IELA 2013 in our hometown and we hope that after your trip you willknow what “Gemütlichkeit” feels like. When we enjoy and experience summer in the city togetherunder centuries-old chestnut trees in the company of good friends and a cool beer.Barbara and Christoph Rauch20IELAREPORT71

The Cathedrals interior is rather modest, with remarkablybeautiful window art. In addition to numerous art treasures, visitors can also view the tomb of LouisIV, Holy Roman Emperor. Pope Benedict XVI was consecrated bishop here in 1977 and served asArchbishop of Munich and Freising until 1982.Behind the cathedral, turn left onto Löwengrube, then right onto Hartmannstraße to reachPromenadeplatz. Renowned banks, offices and galleries have operated here for 200 years on theformer site of a trading centre for salt. This square is defined by the Bayerischer Hof hotel, built byKing Ludwig I in 1841 and which has been owned by the same family of hoteliers since 1879.To its right is the Palais Montgelas, which was the official residence in 1918 of Bavarian’s first premier,Kurt Eisner. Facing east is the yellow Theatinerkirche St. Kajetan(Theatine Church of St. Cajetan), which was erected by Italian master builders and stucco specialistsin the mid-17th century to honour the birth of Prince Max Emanuel. This was the royal church forthe Royal Residence opposite and is home to the House of Wittelsbach’s family crypt. OppositeOdeonsplatz is the Hofgarten (Royal Garden), which forms the northern boundary of the RoyalResidence. This is a wonderful place to rest!Either at Café Tambosi with a view of the bustle, or pleasantly tranquil in the garden. BavarianKing Ludwig 1 had the Feldherrenhalle built between 1841 and 1844 as a memorial to the Bavarianarmy and its victorious generals. Although Viktualienmarkt naturally attracts tourists, you still get a genuine Munich experience here. It’s well worth to saunter from one stand to thenext and try different specialties. You have deserved it!24IELAREPORT71

What other Germans call a Brezel is a Brez’n (pretzel) inMunich; and Karlsplatz is actually Stachus. Why is that so? Let us explain. What is the etymology ofMunich? Monks (Mönche) were already living here when Munich was founded in 1158. Thus arosethe place name “apud Munichen” – at the monks’. Ever since, the seal of Munich has included amonk of some sort. More recently in history, the monk’s depiction was erroneously thought to bea child – which led to the Münchner Kindl fairy tale. When does the Münchner Kindl (Munich Child) go to bed?At 9 pm, a night watchman and an angel of peace appear in the Town Hall’s oriel and put theMünchner Kindl to bed. The ceremony is accompanied by composer Johannes Brahms’Wiegenlied.Registration forms: 28 th IELA Congresshttp://www.ielacongress.com/fileadmin/IELA/media/congress_2013/28th_IELA_Congress_2013_Registration_Form.pdf 2 nd IELA Partnering Eventhttp://www.ielacongress.com/fileadmin/IELA/media/congress_2013/2nd_IELA_Partnering_Event_2013_Registration_Form.pdf 28 th IELA Congress: ParticipantList – status March 26 th , 2013http://www.ielacongress.com/fileadmin/IELA/media/congress_2013/26.03.2013_Participant_List_28th_IELA_Congress.pdfWhat is Münchner Freiheit? The former public-transport station Feilitzschplatz was renamed Münchner Freiheit (MunichFreedom) in 1946 to honour the members of Freiheitsaktion Bayern, who had unsuccessfully risenup against the Nazi regime in Munich in April 1945.Why do people rinse their purses and wallets in the Fischbrunnen?Every Ash Wednesday since 1426, people traditionally rinse out their purses in the Fischbrunnen(Fish Fountain) at Rathaus (Town Hall) – along with the Munich’s mayor. This custom is said toprotect against financial difficulties; it also symbolizes that purses are empty following Carnival andeveryone would benefit from a pay rise.Where does the name Stachus come from?Prince Elector Karl Theodor had a Square designed in 1790 which was to bear his name. Yet theofficial name, Karlsplatz (Karl’s Square), never caught on. Munich residents refer to Karlsplatz asStachus because – close to today’s Kaufhof – the beloved restaurant Stachusgarten opened in 1755,which had been named after its proprietor: Eustachius Föderl. Karlsplatz has thus been known asStachus for over 250 years. Sevenweeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public. Theshy king had built the castle in order to withdraw from public life – now vast numbers of peoplecame to view his private refuge.Today Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular of all the palaces and castles in Europe.Every year 1.3 million people visit "the castle of the fairy-tale king". In the summer around6,000 visitors a day stream through rooms that were intended for a single inhabitant. Palace of LinderhofThe setting of Neuschwanstein could not be more idyllic. However, movement in thefoundation area has to be continuously monitored, and the sheer rock walls must be repeatedlysecured. The harsh climate also has a detrimental effect on the limestone façades, which willhave to be renovated section by section over the next few years.Don’t miss to visit the renowned dream castles of the fairy tale king Ludwig II, built in the 19 th century:Royal castle of Neuschwanstein, majestically situated in the beautiful Bavarian Alps 130km from Munichhttp://www.stadtrundfahrten-muenchen.de/en/day_trips/angebot/neuschwanstein-1/The rococo-style palace of Linderhof with its fantastic grottohttp://www.stadtrundfahrten-muenchen.de/en/day_trips/angebot/linderhof-1/The castle Herrenchiemsee, a grand replica of the Palace Versailles, located on the island of Lake Chiemseehttp://www.stadtrundfahrtenmuenchen.de/en/day_trips/angebot/the_royal_castle_of_herrenchiemsee/26IELAREPORT71

And thus wasinvented the lifesaving pretzel, known in Munich as a Brez’n.What is the origin of Oktoberfest? The people of Munich have celebrated Oktoberfest since 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig vonBayern married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The wedding festivities were heldoutside the city gates on the site where Oktoberfest takes place, Theresienwiese – named in honourof the bride. Why is “Weißwurst” traditionally eaten only in the mornings?Weißwurst, or veal sausage, needs to be eaten fresh. In the past, when keeping food cool wasdifficult, the rule was you had to eat it before the church bells struck twelve-o’clock. According toanother legend, the Weißwurst was sold in the mornings to craftsmen, to make space in thebutchers for more expensive products in the afternoon, to sell to the better off.Tip: Climb into the head of the Bavaria statueThe erection of Oktoberfest structuresbegins in July. In front of theRuhmeshalle, you simply need to climbup the steps inside Bavaria (over 18metres in height) to reach the viewingplatform, which affords you a superbview of the Oktoberfest fairgrounds. INDUSTRY NEWSINDUSTRY - NEWSDALLAS, 19 March 2013 Today, the Center for Exhibition IndustryResearch (CEIR) has released year-end results for the CEIR Index. After anencouraging, first-half with growth near 2.4 percent and tracking to meetthe 2.9 percent projection, performance in the second half of 2012declined. The cooling that was reflected in the third quarter continuedinto the fourth quarter with the CEIR Index for the overall exhibitionindustry finishing at 1.5 percent growth for the year, lagging behind therevised government GDP estimate of 2.2 percent.Fourth Quarter CEIR IndexResults Show Slower Growth for Industry OverallCEIR Economist Allen Shaw, Ph.D., Chief Economist for Global EconomicConsulting Associates, Inc. said, "We had a positive outlook during thefirst and second quarters of 2012, however, the exhibition industry beganto slump in the third quarter and continued through the end of the year.We attribute this to the well-publicized prospect of the "fiscal cliff" whichsubstantially hurt business sentiment and willingness to incur travelexpenses, and ultimately hurt the exhibition industry."Based on the initial projection for the year, the sectors that were expectedto do well performed better than projected. Conversely, sectors with lowexpectations performed worse than projected. Two sectors that exceededprojections were Discretionary Consumer Services (CS) and Sporting Goods,Travel and Entertainment (ST). Both rely on consumer confidence as doesthe Consumer Goods and Retail Trade sector. For example, the movieindustry reported record growth despite consumer confidence today being10 points lower than it was this time last year. Encouraging performancewas also turned in by the Finance, Legal and Real Estate (FN), andCommunications and Information Technology (IT) sectors.Compared to the third quarter, Attendance, the leading indicator, slowed from 1.3 percent to 1.0 percent. Similarly slowing growth wasreflected in Net Square Feet which was down slightly from 1.2 percent inthe third quarter to 0.8 percent in the fourth quarter. Exhibitors slowedfrom 0.5 percent to 0.2 percent and Revenues which were adjusted forinflation slowed from 1.6 percent to 1.3 percent. As an objective measure of the annual performance of the exhibition industry, the CEIR Index measuresyear-over-year changes in four key metrics to determine overall performance: Net Square Feet of ExhibitSpace Sold; Professional Attendance; Number of Exhibiting Companies; and Gross Revenue. The CEIRIndex provides exhibition industry performance across 14 key industry sectors: Business Services;Consumer Goods; Discretionary Consumer Services; Education; Food; Financial, Legal and Real Estate;Government; Building, Construction, Home and Repair; Industrial/Heavy Machinery and Finished BusinessInputs; Communications and Information Technology; Medical and Healthcare; Raw Materials andScience; Sporting Goods, Travel and Entertainment; and Transportation. ⊳About CEIRCEIR serves to advance the growth, awarenessand value of exhibitions and other face-to-facemarketing events by producing and deliveringknowledge-based research tools that enablestakeholder organizations to enhance theirability to meet current and emerging customerneeds, improve their business performanceand strengthen their competitive position. This has been an historic yearfor IELA, when IELA has movedforward with new organisation setup completed as adopted during lastIELA Congress at Barcelona. With thischange quite a dynamism has beenactivated by the Board of Directors.Secretariat has taken up the role offollowing very closely prospectivemembers for IELA and the resultshave been overwhelming. I expressmy appreciation for this activity ofSecretariat which has resulted instrengthening IELA Membership. There were 120 members of IELAat Barcelona Congress.> 2 Members: M/s A.J. vanDeudekom and M/s Trans Impexresigned from IELA> 1 Member: M/s Bentraco wasexpelled due to non payment ofMembership fees.> 5 Additional Members acceptedin IELA family since Barcelona areBTG Suisse, Interflow Ireland, GoEvents USA, Siddhartha LogisticsIndia and WEL France.Couple of applications receivedhave been reviewed by Board andare expected to be inducted asmembers once process is completed. One more member from Azerbaijan,a white spot, is also expected to joinIELA once the process is completed. With the success of 1 st PartneringEvent at Barcelona there are 27 hotprospects for joining IELA and 41prospects have shown interest injoining IELA.Thus anticipated membership incoming months is expected to toucharound 129.As was conveyed by Chairman BobMoore, new Board have revised theprocess of processing New Applicationsand same are now scrutinised bySecretariat and presented to Boardfor review with this Role ofMembership Working Group inscrutinising new applications hasbeen dispensed with. As explainedby Chairman, this makes the processfaster and leaves members ofMembership Working Group toconcentrate on other areas relatedto spreading the IELA brand to newagents in areas not represented atIELA or new players who havejoined this specialised exhibitionlogistics field. This will need discussions amongstmembers of Membeship WorkingGroup revising this aspect ofMembership Working Group. Wehave had discussions regarding thisaspect at Barcelona where creationof Data Base of agents involved inexhibition logistics particularly inarea and regions not represented inIELA was discussed. It is suggestedthat members of the MembershipWorking Group will take on regionsin their areas of operations for suchexploration. Also other aspects suchas promotion of IELA membershipdrive along with PR Group, relatingwith new members in IELA will bediscussed during next Congress atMunich. I would welcome any othersuggestion for Membership WorkingGroup to make its impact in IELAideology.Looking forward to suggestions andcontributions for making MembershipWorking Group effective in furtheringgoals of IELA. ⊳Shirish Kulkarni40IELAREPORT71

I joined Vicki for theExhibition and a couple of additionalIndustry Events attached to the IAEEConvention--- two of which werethe Annual Exhibition ServiceContractor’s Association businessdinner as well as the third edition ofExhibition Summit Meeting whichincluded most of the majorExhibition Industry Associations inthe US.In fact, of all the IndustryAssociations present at theConvention, IELA was the onlyAssociation interviewed on theConvention News Network coveringthe event----thus giving IELAadditional positive exposure to theConvention exhibitors andattendees. We shared a generous amount oftime with the new incomingPresident of IAEE, David Dubois, who is quite enthusiastic about thecurrent and future IELA/IAEErelationship.In fact, Mr. Dubois has asked IELAto prepare a learning session /presentation to be included in thenext IAEE Convention in Houston,Texas, this coming December. I willbe eager to solicit the support of allof our US IELA colleagues tocontribute and participate in thedevelopment of the presentation.(In fact an open invitation isextended to any IELA member whowould like to contribute. I will passalong the format and seminarparameters when discussed withthe IAEE.)Also, we had time to discuss themany accomplishments of theoutgoing President, Mr. StevenHacker who presided over the IAEEfor 21 years.Mr. Hacker received the 2012 JMIC(Joint Meeting Industry Council)Power and Profile Award whichrecognizes individuals andorganizations whose advocacyefforts have advanced the interestsof the events and exhibitionsindustry.Hacker was one of the sector’smost vocal and effective advocates.I cite this because hisaccomplishments have relevance toall of us in IELA; his advocacy effortson behalf of our Industry may havesimilar relevance to ExhibitionIndustry/Government issues in allof our countries.Working with the US TravelAssociation and the AmericanSociety of Association Executives, hechampioned expansion of the VisaWaiver Program to the US Congress.Mr. Hacker stressed that:> Visa issues prevent 116,000international visitors fromattending US Exhibitions eachyear including 78,400 buyers and37,900 exhibitors.> That the average spending byeach international buyer andattendee is more than $13,600.> Spending by internationalexhibitors averages more than$36,100.> By reducing US Visa Barriers, the US economy would realizeincreases in business sales ofabout $3billion a year.> Reduced Visa barriers wouldcreate more than 17,500 jobsdirectly and 43,000 jobsindirectly.> More than $750 million in taxrevenue would be generated. Thanks largely to Mr. Hacker’sefforts, US Travel recentlyreported that:> Approximately 90% of visaapplicants are interviewed withinthree weeks of applicationsubmission.> In addition, a 40% rise inprocessing capacity has beenachieved in Brazil and soon willbe in China. Are any of these Visa issuessimilar in your countries? Couldincreased exhibition business bevaluable to the business andtourism sectors of all of ourcountries? Obviously, the answer isyes-----the question : what, ifanything, can we as IELA do toassist----to provide information tothose who do advocate for relaxedVisa regulations?IELAREPORT7141

WORKING GROUP NEWSORGANISERS WORKING GROUPThe purpose of the IELA OrganiserWorking Group is to spread IELAexposure to and create a liaison withthe “powers to be” of the InternationalExhibition & Events Industry; the majorOrganisers, representatives andAssociations that “drive” theExhibition Industry. We’re “telling the story of IELA”and promoting the IELA Brand.Whether we exhibit at IndustryEvents, provide Exhibition LogisticIndustry presentations, publishpertinent Industry articles or assistwith Industry Advocacy issues, weare ultimately generating potentialbusiness for our IELA Membercompanies which is a value addedbenefit, it seems to me, the primebenefit, of our IELA Membership. To be more specific, an added goalor reason for our WG’s activity, wouldbe that our offer to the GlobalExhibition Industry Organisers results inall IELA Members being considered, designated and recognized as“Preferred Vendors”. That kind of brandrecognition would go a long way toincrease the possibilities of all IELAmembers gaining additional businessin our competitive marketplace.Probably, that goal may not berealistic in every case. But, short of thatdesignation, we all can “sell” the IELABrand confident that we are andshould be “Preferred Vendors” to thebusiness advantage of ourselves andour companies. In my conversations with IndustryExecutives, Associations and Organisers,I have yet to meet someone who wasnot impressed by the “IELA Story”---our singular Association, extensiveglobal network, our strict standards, experience requirements, exhibitioncustoms experience and database etc.I suppose that all of our members willfind this response to be true in theirown markets and countries. Continueto “sell the IELA Story” to youradvantage in whatever forum, medium or event that you can.I recognize that all of the membersof the Organiser Working Group areutmost professionals; experts both intheir business knowledge and thebusiness regulations of their specificcountries. And, I know they are tellingthe “IELA Story” well in their countries. Please plan to continue to yourindividual advantage. And I continue to thank the Group forall of its implied efforts. ⊳John Harrison42IELAREPORT71

I was honored to take partat the Winter Seminar 2013 in Zurichto present “IELA Standards”. Besidestalking about the Standards I usedthis unique opportunity to bring tothe “students” the Survey and itsimportance. Most of them have never evenheard about it. I had reinforced tothem a lot the meaning of it and howit affects the Association. It seemedthey got it and I hope they will takethis back to their companies and helpfor the next edition of the Survey. Now, the SurveyIt was a team effort between theSecretariat and the StandardsWorking Group members. It's been a long and difficultjourney to have members answeringthe questionnaire. At the same it isalso challenging. I mean challengingbecause we must try to find moresolutions to motivate the membersto answer the questions. Weextended several times the deadline,we sent several reminders and got intouch with the non-respondents, oneby one. And the results are:> Respondents Export: 91members> Respondents On-Site: 88members> Non-respondent total: 13membersLast year we had 20 nonrespondents. There is a reduction, butwe are more ambitious, we want toreach 100% of answering. But to getto this mark we need support from allthe members. If it is not possible forperson who receives the password toanswer the questionnaire, it isnecessary to forward to someonecapable to do so.To make brief picture of the resultswe had:Site Agents> 502 surveys completed in 2012;668 in 2011> Average Score 5.3 in 2012; 5.22in 2011Export Agents> 578 surveys completed in 2012;654 in 2011> Average 5.3 in 2012; 5.11 in 2011There is a discrete improvementfrom last year. But it can be due thereduction of the number of answers. The highest rate is “7”, so we arenot reaching the sky, but we are notunder the average. The Survey is an X-Ray of IELAmembers and it is where we can seehow our companies are doing andwhere it is necessary to improve. Itis also an important tool for theAward which is recognition of theefforts of the best agent.During the next conference inMunich we will be presenting thecomplete results. We know we can do better, however we need the commitmentof everybody. We are looking forsolutions and if there is any idea, don’t be shy, share it with us. ⊳Kind regards and see you in Munich!MarianeSTANDARDS WORKING GROUPZiad HarbBCC Qatar, QatarJihad KhouryAirlink International, U.A.EManuel MazziniIEL Inter ExpoLogistics Ltd, SwitzerlandBas OversierA.J. Please refer to fullreport written by Jim Kelty on this IELAReport of the IELA Winter Seminar.Once again it was a huge effort toarrange the seminar. Special thanks goto Achim Lotzwick and Jim Kelty. Theircommitment to IELA and to thebenefits members receive through thistraining event was the core force thatput it all together. Coupled with thehelp of lecturers (most from IELAmember companies) giving theirvaluable time, we can proudly say thatseminar attendees got specialinstructions, insight and advise that isonly available within the IELAorganization. The students – and theiremployers – will benefit from thistraining effort for years to follow. Withgreat appreciation I like to thank invited(non-IELA member companies)lecturers for their time and effortcoming all the way to Zurich. These IELA Winter Seminars havebeen and will continue to be organizedmainly on the voluntary basis. While attimes it can be hard to find lecturers, the people who have been willing andable to allocate the time to developing, organizing and participating in theseminar have been terrific and thisshows a definite strength of IELA.Throughout its history the IELA WinterSeminar has consistently beenorganized in a professional way with itscontent meeting the highest standardsof training. However our IELAactivities are not sleeping at all!Personally, I had the greatpleasure of being lecturer at theIELA Winter Seminar in Zurich thisyear, where 30 young staffemployees from IELA membersfrom all over the world attended. Iwas impressed how well educatedand skilled our students were! Theirengagement and spirit to be part ofthe prospering IELA network wasreally amazing. In my opinion thisyoung people have got thepotential to be the IELA chairman inapproximately 15-20 years. So wecan be sure, that the future of IELAis secured in a very reliable way.Particularly with regard to ourincreasing network, I am pleased torelate in my core business aschairperson for the working groupas follows:The new homepagewill beonline in April. We are still workingon the development of the MEMBERZONE. One of our biggest challengesis the creation of a seriouscommunication platformcontiguous to our daily business, which also offers new businessopportunities. In addition we would like togenerate a new membershippackage as those you obtained inBarcelona last year. There is theidea of revitalizing the formerposters (IELA general, Export,Onsite) with a new layout tocommunicate in our officesworldwide what IELA is, educatingour people and strengthening theIELA Brand and awareness of thequality IELA members deliver. We would much appreciate, ifyou could give us your input aboutthe content of these posters aswell.
