Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Effects of Altitude:An Analysis of the Literaturecontraindicated for use in TBI patients. A detailed exploration of pharmaceutical interventions is beyondthe scope of this review, but can be found elsewhere (Wright et al., 2008).Military operational medicine provides unique settings and opportunities for medical scientific researchand development. TBI is a persistent challenge in civilian and military settings, due in large part tomultiple difficulties inherent to the prevention and control of secondary brain injury. Associatedpractical challenges are most pronounced in the combat casualty environment, where military medics, flight crews and surgeons often must perform heroic acts of medical care in austere, complex andsometimes hostile conditions. In the combat setting where multiple environmental and operationalvariables are brought to bear on human health and performance, the possible effects of high altitude onmilitary TBI may be more difficult to specify than to prevent. It is hoped that this review will spuradditional research as needed to delineate best available solutions and treatments.September 14, 2010 27
