Items to Consider1. Short Haul ApplicationsShort haul applications such as city pick-up, delivery and milkrun pick-up’s (typically 30 miles (50km) or less) result in aparticularly harsh environment for the operation of tractortrailers. As a result, even though the particular application maymeet all of the criteria of a category (e.g. “Standard Duty”), thenext higher category will be required (e.g. “Moderate Duty’).2. Inner City Fuel HaulingInner city fuel haul applications result in a particularly harshenvironment for the operation of tractor trailers. As a result, even though the particular application may meet all of thecriteria of a category (e.g. “Standard Duty”), the Severe DutyOn-Road category must be used.3. Dump TrailersAxle StopsTrailers used for dump applications must have axle stopsinstalled on the rear axle. The load transfer to the rear axleduring the dumping operation could transfer enough weight tothe rear axle to exceed its load rating and potentially damagesuspension components. Axle stops are not provided bySAF-HOLLAND, but are to be incorporated into the trailerdesign.4. Low Boy Equipment TrailersAxle StopsTrailers used for float/lowboy applications must have axle stopsinstalled on the rear axle. The load transfer to the rear axleduring the loading operation will transfer enough weight tothe rear axle to exceed its load rating and potentially lessen itslongevity. Axle stops are not provided by SAF-HOLLAND but areto be incorporated in the trailer design.5. Severe EnvironmentsSome areas of the country are particularly difficult on theoperation of a trailer. This would include most logging roads, chip van environments, steep mountain or steep grades (e.g.20% or greater) where the vehicle is subjected to extremeconditions. In these applications there are times where youmust move up to the next capacity suspension. GlossaryA-TrainA combination of two or more trailers in which the dolly(converter or turntable) is connected by a single pintle hook orcoupler, and the drawbar connection is at the center betweeneach vehicle. The resulting connection has two pivot points(Figure 1).Pivot PointFigure 1Axles, NumberingWhen used in this guide to select a suspension, the number ofaxles (for example, “Up to 4-axle trains”) refers to the totalnumber of axles on the “towed vehicle(s)” or trailer(s). It doesnot include the axles on the towing vehicle.B-TrainA combination of two or more trailers in which the rear semitrailer(s)is connected with a single pivot point, commonly afifth wheel, mounted on an extension of the frame of the leadtrailer (Figure 2).Pivot PointCenter-of-Gravity (c.g.)That point in a vehicle or body where the total weight or masscould be considered to be concentrated. Used in conjunctionwith vehicle stability and weight distribution on its axles.Converter DollyAn axle, frame, drawbar and fifth wheel arrangement thatconverts a semi-trailer into a full trailer.Full TrailerA trailer which does not transfer load to the towing vehicle. Itemploys a towbar coupled to a swivelingor steerable running gear assembly at the front ofthe trailer.Kompensator ® Mounting BaseA mounting base designed to relieve some of the torqueand twist that is generated by some trailer designs, therebyreducing or eliminating trailer frame cracks. Tractor tandemtire life is also greatly increased due to improved traction. Theprimary application for a Kompensator ® mounted fifth wheel isfor tankers in which the c.g. does not exceed 44 inches abovethe top surface of the fifth wheel.Maximum Gross Combination WeightThe maximum recommended capacity of a tractor/trailercombination, which is a sum of the weight of the towingvehicle, any towed vehicle(s) (empty weight) and the payload.C-TrainFigure 2A combination of two or more trailers in which the dolly(converter or turntable) is connected to the trailer by means oftwo pintle hook or coupler-drawbar connections. The resultingconnection has one pivot point (Figure 3).Pivot PointOff-RoadRefers to the terrain on which a tractor-trailer will operatewhich is unpaved and rough, or ungraded.
