ARCANA COELESTIA 3756me there. The sphere of their life may be compared to a sickeningsmell which is exhaled from the stomach, and also to the heavinessfrom indigestion. They who have been of this character stay long inthis region, because solicitude about the future, when confirmed byact, greatly dulls and retards the influx of spiritual life; for theyattribute to themselves that which is of Divine providence; andthey who do this obstruct the influx, and take away fromthemselves the life of good and truth.5178. As solicitude about things to come is what producesanxieties in man, and as such spirits appear in the region of thestomach, therefore anxieties affect the stomach more than the otherviscera. I then discoursed withthem about spheres, saying that there are very many spiritualspheres about man, and that men do not know nor desire to knowthat such is the case, because they deny all that which is calledspiritual, and some whatever is not seen and touched; thus thatcertain spheres from the spiritual world encompass man, agreeingwith his life, and that by means of them man is in company withspirits of similar affection, and that many things take place therebywhich the man who attributes all things to nature either denies or
