PROCEDURE FOR REMOVAL OFPERIPHERALLY INSERTED CENTRAL CATHETER (<strong>PICC</strong>) AND MIDLINEThis procedure should be read in conjunction with the Vascular Access Device PolicySection 8.3This catheter can be removed by either nursing or medical staff.Equipment• Clean trolley• Dressing pack• 2% chlorhexidine in alcohol applicator ( e.g. Chloraprep 3ml)• IV Dressing ( e.g. Opsite IV3000 central line dressing)<strong>Procedure</strong>1) Explain procedure to patient <strong>and</strong> position com<strong>for</strong>tably ( NB Trendelbergposition is not required)2) Clean h<strong>and</strong>s:3) Gather equipment required onto clean trolley4) Move to patients bedside5) Clean h<strong>and</strong>s6) Open sterile pack onto trolley without causing contamination7) Put on apron8) Clean h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> arrange sterile area with bag from dressing pack withoutcausing contamination9) Clean h<strong>and</strong>s, open dressing <strong>and</strong> 2% chlorhexidine applicator onto sterile fieldwithout causing contamination10) Clean h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> put on sterile gloves11) Clean insertion site <strong>for</strong> 30-60 seconds <strong>and</strong> allow to dry12) Place one piece <strong>of</strong> folded gauze over <strong>PICC</strong> or midline <strong>and</strong> then gently pull outline until completely removed. (If resistance felt then stop <strong>and</strong> contactVascular Access Team)13) Apply pressure with gauze <strong>for</strong> 2 minutes14) Apply dressing over gauze <strong>and</strong> advise patient to keep it on <strong>for</strong> at least 24hours.15) Examine the <strong>PICC</strong> to make sure all is removed.
