Down through the years with david houselPresented byplead guilty.I Guilty as charged: of being an old man andseeing Auburn and Auburn football throughthe eyes of an old man. Many times in this space I have lamented, asothers of my generation have lamented, theloss of Tennessee as an annual opponent onthe Auburn schedule. For 45 years, 1956-1991, Auburn andTennessee played every year. With oneexception, 1968, the game was played earlyin the year, usually the first game or firstconference game of the season. Both teamsknew early, very early, how good they wouldbe and how much work still needed to bedone. The Auburn-Tennessee game was thestandard, a measuring stick. Win and youwere a contender; lose and you were, moreoften than not, an also-ran.Good game, big game, early, early…The waysports fans like it, the way things ought to be.Or so we thought. But the SEC, in its infinite wisdom, changedall of that in 1992 when Auburn, over itsobjection, was placed in the western division,Tennessee in the east. The annual rivalry withTennessee, one of the best, most anticipatedgames on Auburn’s schedule for more than40 years, was no more. The trip to Tennessee every other yearwas special. The reasonably short drive toKnoxville and the Great Smokey Mountainsin the early fall, just as the leaves werebeginning to turn, signaled the unofficial startof football season. When Tennessee cameto Auburn for the first time in 1974, afterinsisting that we play our “home” games inBirmingham from 1956 through 1972, it wassomething of a practice run for Alabama’sfirst trip to Auburn in 1989.And as Coach Jordan, who loved the anticipationand excitement of the Tennesseegame often said, the Auburn Tigers and theVolunteers played some great games “downthrough the years:” 7-0, the first victory on theroad to the National Championship, the 13-0no-first down game in 1958, three straightyears of coming from two touchdowns ormore behind to win, 22-21, 24-21 and 23-19,the 1968 night game in Birmingham, 28-14,the Sullivan years, 36-23 and 10-9, and theAmazin’s 10-6 upset in 1972, all Auburnvictories. One tends to forget the other team’swins as the years go by, but Tennessee hadits share of great wins, too.Auburn-Tennessee had history, tradition andintensity. Auburn-LSU had none of that, nohistory, no tradition and little, if any, intensity. Why change, we Auburn people said in1992. Why take that away from us? Awayfrom College Football? An old dog is not supposed to learn newtricks, but this old dog, this old Auburn doghas learned a quite a few in the 22 yearswe’ve been playing LSU on a regular basis.First, Auburn-LSU games can be, and usuallyare, every bit as exciting and meaningfulas the Auburn-Tennessee games were.Think about it: 34-10, the first big win of thePerfect 11 and 000-hh season, the 30-26interception game in 1994, 1996 when the“barn” burned, 41-7 at Baton Rouge, TommyTuberville’s first SEC victory at Auburn, 10-9in 2004, 7-3 in 2006 and, of course, 24-17in 2010. Who could ever forget Cam’s run?And through the years, there has come realizationthat the elements of a good road trip inthe SEC are not confined to Knoxville.Knoxville had Regis and YeOlde Steakhouse and BatonRouge has, or had, MikeAnderson’s and Phil’sOyster Bar. May theOyster Bar and Gus RIP.Both cities have scenicrivers. Knoxville has theTennessee, Baton Rougethe Mississippi, the“Mighty Mississippi,”“the Father of Waters”Advantage: LSU andBaton Rouge.Knoxville and BatonRouge both have nearbycities where Auburn fanscan spend Friday night.Knoxville hasChattanooga; Baton Rouge, New Orleans. With all due respect to Rock City, the InclineRailway, Ruby Falls, Lookout Point and RoyExum, New Orleans with Bourbon Street, theFrench Quarter, its unmatched cuisine andatmosphere, wins hands down. So, after all these years, after many, manywords and paragraphs, there will no morelamentation in this space about loss of theTennessee game. Miss it? Yes. Shared storiesand remembrances about how good it was?Possibly, even probably. But to say we oughtto go back? No.To say that the Auburn-Tennessee rivalry thenwas better than the Auburn-LSU rivalry oftoday? No way. Never. Auburn-Tennesseebelongs to the past, to old folks’ times.Auburn-LSU is now. It belongs to this generationand to the years to come. All of which brings to mind once againthe historic marker at Ross Square, site ofAuburn’s first football field, which reads inpart, “Owing much to the past, Auburn’sgreater debt is ever to thefuture.”Auburn’s future iswith LSU, notTennessee. And that,no longer, isa badthing.2012 AUBURN FOOTBALL105AUBURNTIGERS.COM
