WHEN HEN CISSY ISSY PLOTNICK LOTNICK, LOTNICK Director of our Ann Newman
Preschool heard who will be joining our staff this summer her
words were, “Life is truly amazing.” Read on to find out why.
Last spring an innovative new position was created for Temple
Sinai – Director of Congregational Learning (DCL). This position
was created to help achieve Temple Sinai’s educational goals for
the future and entails providing vision, leadership and direction for
all of Temple Sinai’s educational programs. The DCL will work
with the senior staff team to assure the Jewish growth of all
synagogue members - adults and children. The DCL will assume
the responsibilities currently held by the Religious School Director
as well as providing oversight and continuity for the Early
Childhood Education program and its director, Youth Groups,
Family Programs, and Adult Education.
A thirteen member search committee, led by Bernie Roseman,
was selected to represent many of the constituencies of the
congregation. It included skilled professionals in the field of
education – both secular and Jewish. We received dozens of
applications from across the country. Many hours were spent
reading resumes, making phone contact with select potential experience includes being a full time educator at Central
candidates, speaking with references, conducting in-person Synagogue in New York, religious school teacher and program
interviews, and watching the best of these candidates conduct director at the Kane Street Synagogue in Brooklyn and as a religion
T HE P ESACH
SEDER HAS BEGUN BEGUN. BEGUN
The guests have been
formally welcomed.
We have recited
kiddush and eaten the
karpas (the vegetable
dipped in salt-water).
And now we have
arrived at yachatz – the
breaking of the middle matzah. Three whole
matzot have been arranged on the seder
table, one on top of the other. The seder
leader must extract the middle matzah and
break it in two. Neither piece is eaten at this
point: the smaller-half resumes its place
between the other two, while the larger-half
is declared the afikoman – the piece which
will be hidden and then found later so it can
be the last item we eat as we prepare to
conclude the seder.
But why do we not hide a whole-piece of
matzah? What need is there for breaking a
perfectly good piece of matzah?
Explanations abound. We demonstrate
that the matzah is lechem oni. the bread of
poverty, by breaking it and leaving only a
small portion on our seder table.
In a superb haggadah – A Night to
Remember: The Haggadah of Contemporary
Voices by Mishael Zion and Noam Zion –
the authors suggest that the broken matzah
tells us something about the world of our
ancestors. “The Pesach story begins in a
broken world, amidst slavery and
oppression. The sound of the breaking of the
FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY
Rabbi Adam Wohlberg
SPRING PRING IS IN THE AIR AIR. AIR.
. And if you’re like me, so is the
smell of cleaning products in your home! Because what would the
change in season be without the “Spring Cleaning” that always
precedes our observance of Pesach? In fact, there are those who
would jokingly contend that it is we Jews who are responsible for
that annual ritual. (We take credit for so many other things, why not
that as well?!?)
The truth is, the preparations we make to properly observe
Pesach have less to do with having a spotless home and more to do
with making our homes into a “chametz-free zone.” Ridding our
homes of leaven, using dinnerware and cookware specially
designated for the eight day observance, and eating only those foods
which are “Kosher for Passover” are but some of the ways in which
we transform that week of our lives into something out of the
ordinary.
It’s not “business as usual” during Pesach. We are constantly
reminded of how precious the gift of freedom is, albeit in a way
which, ironically, somewhat limits our freedom (at least in terms of
what we can and cannot eat). There was a song written a number of
years ago entitled, “Freedom Isn’t Free.” Veterans’ organizations
like to use that phrase in their appeals for contributions. Its message
is simple: there is a price to be paid for freedom. It might take the
matzah sends us into that fractured
existence, only to become whole again
when we find the broken half, the
afikoman, at the end of the Seder.”
My father used to tell us that in
breaking the matzah we were reminded
of slavery. A slave can never be sure
when he might see food again, and so
part of what he receives, he saves, he sets
aside, for a later time.
Such was the case during the Holocaust,
too. Jews in the concentration camps
sometimes saved a piece of their meager
rations for bargaining purposes or because
they feared that additional food might not be
forthcoming.
In A Night to Remember, a story appears
which is told by Bina Talitman and
borrowed from Reliving Exodus. “Every
year, on Seder night, when I break the
matzah in half and hide the afikoman, I am
overcome with emotion as I recall my first
day in Israel. I arrived in Kibbutz Kedma
together with other children, all of us new
immigrants who had arrived in Israel
without our parents after World War II. We
were hungry, penniless and exhausted from
our wandering and constant hunger. On the
table in the dining room, there were all
kinds of delicious foods. There were plenty
of vegetables, cheeses and bread, and we
could take as much as we wanted. I couldn’t
believe my eyes. I couldn’t believe that at
the next meal, we would also have as much
bread to eat as we wanted.”
“There were many days in Europe when I
could think of nothing else except bread – of
which there was never enough. There were
many nights when I went to bed hungry. I
would remain awake for hours, with my
stomach growling from hunger, dreaming of
bread. But now in Israel there was so much
food.”
“What did I do in those first days in the
kibbutz, when we sat down at the table,
loaded down with so many good foods? I
was filled with fear that maybe there
wouldn’t be any bread the next day. So I
would break each slice of bread I received in
half. I would eat half, and the other half I
would hide in my pocket. I could not forget
the days in which I was never sure if there
would be bread tomorrow.”
We who have not known deprivation and
hunger may never feel the compulsion to set
aside some of our bread for tomorrow. But
when we perform the act of yachatz at our
seder table, I hope that we will be reminded
that there are those less fortunate than we
are who deserve our concern and our aid.
Before Pesach arrives, be sure to give a
donation to Project Hope, to Mazon, or to
another organization that will help to feed
the hungry. And as you eat the afikoman at
the end of your seder, may you offer the
appropriate thanks for the food with which
you have been blessed.
Shira, Tamar, Hana and I wish you a
Chag Kasher v’Sameach – a joyous Pesach!
form of serving in our
country’s military to
defend the freedoms we
hold so dear. It might take the form of obeying
the laws, laws which help to ensure a peaceful
and stable society. Or it just might mean always
remembering, never forgetting the preciousness
of the freedom we all too often take for granted
in this great country of ours. Well, we Jews do
remember, annually, that wonderful gift of
freedom. We do it by reliving the pain of
slavery and the glory of freedom as we perform
the traditional rituals of the seder.
THE CANTOR’S CORNER
Cantor Stephen Freedman
In doing so, perhaps we also sensitize ourselves to the sad reality
that there is still slavery in the world today, of all types. In doing so,
perhaps we will be moved to help bring about the freedom for
others that we enjoy. In doing so, perhaps we will engage in the
profound challenge of tikun olam, working to repair this still-broken
world in which we live. Perhaps the brittleness of the matzah which
we eat, its tendency to crumble, will serve to remind us of that
brokenness which we are striving to make whole.
Best wishes to you and yours for a Chag Kasher v’Sameach.

HONORING
FOR THEIR MANY YEARS
OF SERVICE AND DEDICATION
TO TEMPLE SINAI
Kol HaKavod
3
We are very excited to announce the
hiring of David Monblatt as our new
Director of Congregational Learning
(DCL). As reported on the front page
of Temple Sinai News, David has
both the experience and the training
needed to lead Temple Sinai’s educational program into the 21 st
century. As our Director of Congregational Learning, he will
oversee all education activities from preschool through adult
education. This new dynamic will enable us to implement a
seamless transition of the educational experience from the
preschool into the religious school by sending one consistent
message throughout the building. The education experience will
spiral as our children participate in a wonderful learning
environment where they are excited about coming to religious
school. Parents will feel confident that their children are
participating in a meaningful learning experience while they
prepare for different holidays and lifecycle events. Our staff will be
using new technology and teaching methods to enhance the
learning experiences of their students.
Those of us who had the opportunity to observe David while he
taught our children in various grades were extremely impressed by
the excitement and enthusiasm he communicated to both the
children and the staff. Equally impressive was the ability of the
children to understand, remember and repeat the lesson in which
they participated.
David is a self-starter and a consensus builder. Even though his
official start date will be July 1, he is anxious to meet with teachers
and parents so that he can learn as much about Temple Sinai as
possible. He is looking forward to working with our professional
staff to design a curriculum that is relevant to what we all feel is
important in our children’s lives and their Jewish experience.
Working with Cissy Plotnick, who will continue as the preschool
director during the coming year, David will interact with the
preschool to help in any way he can to insure the best program
possible.
This is a renewal of our ongoing commitment to insure that
Temple Sinai’s schools are, and will continue to be, the template
for excellence in Jewish education. Building upon the leadership of
Faith Rubin who has served us for the past 29 years, David will
gain insight into our history as Faith continues to be available to us
over the next year.
David was selected from out of more than 40 candidates who
applied for the position. Our search committee of highly qualified
congregants was made up of a cross section of the synagogue and
after a long and arduous process, they came to the unanimous
decision that David was the best applicant qualified to lead us into
the 21st century. The committee worked tirelessly and must be
commended for the terrific work they did. They showed how well
and effective the committee system works at Temple Sinai. They
were given a difficult job and took it seriously. Bernie Roseman,
chair of the committee, stated that they considered their task “no
less than the future of Judaism at stake” for our community.
Leadership, as demonstrated by the DCL taskforce, comes in
many shapes and forms. Pesach is once again being celebrated by
Jews around the world. It is a celebration of our freedoms as a
nation, Am Yisrael, and as a continuing lesson to us about the
importance of leadership. The Torah speaks to the leadership of
Moses, Aaron and Miriam as well as to the tribal leaders, from
chieftains to lieutenants. Without the efforts of the tribal leadership,
4
PRESIDENTIALLY SPEAKING
by Andrew Meyer & Alan Katz
the Torah’s “A” Team might not have succeeded in their tasks or
finished their journey so that their children could enjoy the fruits of
the land promised to their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So
it is with Temple Sinai. Without the continued and tireless efforts
of our synagogue leaders, all the wonderful happenings and events
and the successful results we have been privileged to enjoy could
not have been achieved. The only way our success will continue is
if you take the time to become a future Temple Sinai Leader.
We all know how difficult it is to set aside time, but we have
learned to appreciate and enjoy the inner warmth which is created
by our successes. Step up to the plate. Take the time to become an
active part of Temple Sinai’s leadership team. You can make a
difference if you jump in and join us on this wonderfully incredible
journey into Temple Sinai’s tomorrow. Please contact either of us
and let us know that you want to be involved. We promise to work
with you to find the proper committee for your interests and help
you become a leader of Temple Sinai. We need you now more than
ever.
Let’s continue this journey together so that our children will be
able to reach our promised land: a vibrant Temple Sinai growing
and prospering into the 21 st Century, It will be our legacy to future
generations. L’Dor V’Dor!
THE HE MONTH OF APRIL PRIL
begins with the orderly
preparations for Pesach – the
holiday that marks the Jewish
festival of freedom and concludes
with the joyful celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut,
Israel’s 61 st 2009-2010
birthday.
From our tiniest tots to our very grown up prekindergarteners,
each and every child has had, and
will continue to have, multiple opportunities to
express what they are learning about Pesach through
the various media of song, dramatic play and art.
The process of learning about the upcoming holiday
began with a visit from the interactive matzah bakery
where the children had an opportunity to observe the
differences in leavened and unleavened dough. Our
preparations will culminate with school Seders that
will be held on Friday, April 3. All of our preschool families will be welcomed to these sederim. Spring vacation will commence
immediately after the sederim.
The value of doing mitzvot will continue to be reinforced when our preschool families are asked to participate in the collection of
kosher for Passover food. When assembled and sorted, the food will be distributed to needy families in the Philadelphia area. We thank
everyone in advance for their generosity.
During the upcoming month we look forward to Israeli dancing led by Don Schillinger, also known as Rak-Dan. Our 3 and 4 year old
children thoroughly enjoy these dancing sessions as they practice following directions while they step to the beat of rhythmic Israeli
music.
Registration for the 2009-2010 school year as well as for the 2009 summer session of Camp Maccabee is ongoing. Please contact the
about drug awareness and other prevalent teen
issues. Evan also volunteers in a recycling
program at his school. Some of Evan’s hobbies
include basketball, skateboarding, and playing
acoustic and electric guitar. For his Mitzvah
project, Evan packed and delivered food for
Jewish Relief Agency. He found it to be very
rewarding and would like to continue to
volunteer. Evan is proud to share this special
day with his mom, Liz, his dad, Marc, his
brother, Jacob, and feels extremely fortunate to
have his 90-year-old grandmother able to join
in the celebration. Also attending will be many
aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
April 18, 2009
April B’nai Mitzvah
Hi, my name is Evan Florin. I am currently in the 7th grade at
Sandy Run Middle School. My favorite things to do are to get
together with friends and play sports – if both happen at the same
time – even better. The sport that I participate in the most is soccer.
I played for the Sandy Run Cardinals last fall and also have played
on two travel soccer teams as well. I also enjoy playing in the
township leagues for basketball and baseball and play football with
friends for fun. I absolutely love watching ESPN sports center every morning as I eat my
breakfast…so what if I have already seen the same broadcast the night before, I never get
bored hearing sports scores and news, even if it is for the second, third or fourth time.
As I mentioned, another favorite thing for me to do is to get together with my friends. I
was very fortunate to be able to do my Mitzvah project with three of my close friends,
Matt Faden, Blake Friedman and Jake Singer. We decided that since the economy was
doing so poorly and it was getting toward the holiday time, it would be nice to help some
of those people that would be suffering. Our project, S.M.I.L.E.S (Something
Meaningful in Little Endeavors) was to collect toys for the Toys for Tots program. We
placed bins in 4 locations: Jarretown Elementary School, Fort Washington Elementary
School, Sandy Run Middle School and here at Temple Sinai. We collected toys for
several weeks, and I am happy to report that thanks to all of you, we filled those bins
over and over again, thus achieving our goal. We, of course, could not have done this
without the help form our wonderful families. My mom helped with checking selected
bins twice a week and calling Toys for Tots when they needed to be emptied. Even my
sister Paige helped with the wrapping of some of the bins as well as making the weekly
reminder announcements at her elementary school. Thanks Paige for all of your help, it
really meant a lot. This project made me realize how doing such a small thing can make
you feel so great. I was personally responsible for putting a “smile” on someone’s face
during the holidays – it can’t get much better than that!
DO YOU LIKE “SPY” STORIES?
Daniel Silva writes exciting, can’t
put them down spy stories. He has a
trilogy of stories on the unfinished business of the Holocaust. THE
ENGLISH ASSASSIN is the first in the series. His hero is the same in
all the stories, Gabriel Allon, an art-restorer and an occasional Israeli
agent. Nazi art looting and the actions of Switzerland are the theme.
THE CONFESSOR came next and deals with the Roman Catholic
church and its involvement during the war. A DEATH IN VIENNA is
the third in the trilogy and deals with the finding and investigating a
Nazi war criminal. Daniel Silva has written several other books in the
Gabriel Allon series – all exciting – all well written – AND available
in the Library. PASSOVER IS COMING and we have a good selection
of Passover stories for the children. Come in and check them out.
“DEAR DR. PHIL”
Dear Dr. Phil,
My daughter-in-law's family came to our Seder. I have never
attended any of their celebrations and am totally uncomfortable
with Christmas and Easter. I now feel I should attend their next
Easter celebration. How can I find peace?
Uncomfortable Jewish Mother
Dear Uncomfortable,
No one can tell you how to feel about Christian celebrations.
Many Jews are uncomfortable attending non-Jewish religious
events. Since they came out of respect for your traditions, it
should now be easier to attend theirs for the sake of family
harmony. You will make your daughter and her family very
happy to have you there.
————————————————————————————
Dear Dr. Phil,
Even though I converted a long time ago I have heard words
around our shul that offend me like "goyim." I do not want to
make a big deal out of it but I would like to say something to the
person that says it. Do you think I should say something? My
husband says not to make a scene. Offended
Dear Offended,
Throughout our history as Jews, we've had ignorant words
hurled at us. Ignorance is ignorance, and this falls under that
category. I see this as an opportunity to educate that person, and you
can do so without being offensive. By saying something like, "you may
not be aware, but coming from a non-Jewish family, I find that term
offensive," and then leave it at that. Whether Jew, Black, Gay, or
Christian it is important to respond to ignorant remarks, intended or
otherwise.
HOUSEHOLD PREPARATIONS
M'CHIRAT HAMETZ – Selling the Hametz
Since we may not possess any leavened food from the morning
prior to the first Seder through the entire Pesach holiday, we must
give up ownership of this food.
Because it is impossible to destroy all of the hametz in one's
possession, rabbinic authorities used a legal fiction embodying a
special sale called m’chirat hametz which is arranged through a
rabbi. Since the hametz is sold to a non-Jew, it does not belong to a
Jew during Passover. All material to be sold is isolated from the
food and utensils used on Passover.
The procedure may be arranged by filling out the form below and
sending it to the synagogue at any time before or during the week
preceding Pesach, but not later than Wednesday morning, April 8.
Authorization for the sale of Hametz
Please copy or print this page, fill out and return to Temple Sinai
office by Wednesday, April 8 no later than 10:00 a.m.
(Copies are also available in Temple Sinai office.)
I do hereby authorize and designate Cantor Freedman as my agent
to act on my behalf to sell and to transfer by transactions all hametz
(as defined by the Torah and Rabbinic Law) of whatever kind and
wherever situated at my residence/business at:
_____________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________
All of the aforesaid Hametz will be sold in accordance with the
requirements of Jewish law and also in accordance with the laws of
the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is intended as a binding
legal transaction.
I (We) further state that the Hametz covered by this agreement will
be stored away at the above address and not used for my personal
benefit during the period commencing no later than 10:30 a.m. on
the morning of Wednesday, April 8, 2009, and concluding no earlier
than 8:22 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2009.
BEDIKAT HAMETZ: The Search for Leaven
Try this with your children! You’ll need a candle, a paper bag, and
a feather to scrape the leaven into the bag.
Before Passover, our homes are cleaned thoroughly. On the
evening before the first night of Passover (this year, Tuesday, April
7), we search our homes for any signs of leavened items. But
because our homes have been cleaned so well, traces of leaven,
such as a few crumbs of bread, are placed in the corners of our
homes and we “search” for them. A candle is lit to use as a
searchlight and the children lead the parents through the house for
the search. All particles of leaven are placed in a paper bag, so that
they may be burned on the morning of the first Seder.
Recite the following blessing before you begin your search:
BLESSED ARE THOU, O LORD OUR GOD, KING OF THE
UNIVERSE, WHO HAS SANCTIFIED US BY THY
COMMANDMENTS, AND COMMANDED US TO REMOVE
ALL LEAVENED GOODS.
After completing the search, the crumbs, together with the
receptacle used to collect them, are put away in a safe place until
the following morning when they are burned in a ceremony called
Biyur Hametz, the burning of the leaven. After the burning, the
following is recited:
ANY KIND OF LEAVEN THAT IS IN MY POSSESSION THAT
I HAVE NOT SEEN OR REMOVED SHALL BE CONSIDERED
NON-EXISTENT OR AS DUST OF THE EARTH.
This year, the burning of the hametz takes place Wednesday
morning, April 8.
FAST OF THE FIRST BORN
Wednesday morning, April 8 at 6:30 a.m.
Because the first born of the Israelites were saved from the tenth
plague, tradition requires all first-born Jewish males to fast on Erev
Pesach until the Seder (This fast is called Taanit Bechorim).
However, the Law states that if a first-born hears the completion of
a tractate of the Talmud, a siyum, he is no longer responsible to
fast. Therefore, on the morning of the first Seder a special service is
held for all first-born sons, during which they hear the completion
of a tractate of the Talmud and then are no longer responsible to
fast on that day. As this is the season when we single out our firstborn
sons, it is very appropriate that all our first-born be
represented.
The service is, of course, not limited to the first-born sons alone.
All are welcome.
COOKING, KASHERING, AND BEYOND!
Since the Torah prohibits the eating of hametz during Pesach, and
since many common foods contain some admixture of hametz,
guidance is necessary when shopping and preparing for Pesach.
Prohibited foods include leavened bread, cakes, biscuits, crackers,
cereal, coffee with cereal derivatives in them, wheat, barley, oats,
spelt, rye, and all liquids containing ingredients or flavors made
from grain alcohol.
Most Ashkenazic authorities have added the following foods to the
above list: rice, corn, millet, legumes (beans and peas; however,
string beans are permitted). The Committee on Jewish Law and
Standards has ruled unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are
permissible, as peanuts are not actually legumes. Some Ashkenazic
authorities permit, while others forbid, the use of legumes in a form
other than its natural state, for example, corn sweeteners, corn oil,
soy oil. Sephardic authorities permit the use of all of the above.
PERMITTED FOODS
A. These foods require NO kosher le-Pesach label IF
purchased PRIOR to Pesach: Unopened packages or containers
of natural coffee (without cereal additives); sugar; pure tea; salt;
pepper; natural spices; fruit juices with no additives (frozen, canned
or bottled); frozen (uncooked) vegetables (for legumes see above);
milk; butter; cottage cheese; cream cheese; ripened cheeses such as
cheddar (hard), muenster (semi-soft), and Camembert (soft); tuna
in water (no oil added); frozen (uncooked) fruit (with no additives);
baking soda.
B. The following foods require NO kosher le-Pesach label if
purchased BEFORE OR DUING Pesach: Fresh fruits and
vegetables, eggs, fresh fish and fresh meat.
C. The following foods DO REQUIRE a kosher le-Pesach label
IF purchased BEFORE OR DURING Pesach: All baked
products (matzah, cakes, matzah flour, farfel, matzah meal, and any
products containing matzah) wine, vinegar, liquor, oils, dried fruits,
candy, chocolate flavored milk, ice cream, yogurt and soda.
D. The following foods REQUIRE a kosher le-Pesach label IF
purchased DURING Pesach: Processed foods (canned, frozen, or
bottled) milk, butter, juices, vegetables, fruit, milk products, spices,
coffee, tea, and fish, as well as all foods listed in Category C.
KASHERING OF UTENSILS
The process of kashering utensils depends on how the utensils are
used. According to halakhah (Jewish law), leaven can be purged
from a utensil by the same process in which it was absorbed in the
utensil (kevoleo kakh poleto). Therefore, utensils used in cooking
are kashered by boiling, those used in broiling are kashered by fire
and heat, and those used only for cold food are kashered by rinsing.
A. Earthenware (china, pottery, etc.) may not be kashered.
However, fine translucent chinaware that has not been used for
over a year may be used if scoured and cleaned in hot water.
B. Metal (wholly made of metal) used in fire (spit broiler)
must first be thoroughly scrubbed and cleansed and then made as
hot as possible. Those used for cooking or eating (silverware, pots)
must be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned and completely
immersed in boiling water. Pots should have water boiled in them
that will overflow the rim.
C. Oven, Ranges, & Microwaves: Every part that comes in
contact with food must be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned. Then,
the oven and range should be heated as hot as possible for half an
hour. If there is a broil setting, use it. Self-cleaning ovens should be
scrubbed and cleaned and then put through the self-cleaning cycle.
Continuous-cleaning ovens must be kashered in the same manner
as regular ovens.
A microwave oven should be cleaned and then a cup of water
should be placed in it. Then the oven should be turned on until the
water disappears. A microwave oven that has a browning element
cannot be kashered for Pesach.
D. Glassware: Opinions vary as to the method of kashering
drinking utensils. One requires soaking in water for three days,
changing the water every 24 hours. The other opinion requires only
a thorough scrubbing before Pesach, or putting it through a
dishwasher.
E. Dishwasher: After not using the machine for a period of
24 hours, a full cycle with detergent should be run.
F. Electrical Appliances: If the parts that come into contact
with hametz are removable, they can be kashered in the appropriate
way (if metal, follow the rules for metal utensils), if the parts are
not removable, the appliance cannot be kashered. (All exposed
parts should be thoroughly cleaned.)
G. Tables, closets and counters: If used with hametz, they
should be thoroughly cleaned and covered, and then they may be
used.
H. Kitchen sink: A metal sink can be kashered by a thorough
cleaning and by pouring boiling water over it. A porcelain sink
should be cleaned and a sink rack used. If, however, dishes are to
be soaked in a porcelain sink, a dish basin must be used.
I. Hametz and non-Passover utensils: Non-Passover dishes,
pots and hametz whose ownership has been transferred, should be
separated, locked up or covered, and marked so as to prevent
accidental use.
Making Your Seder Kid-Friendly
Adapted from materials by Shelley Kapnek Rosenberg, Ed.D.
Consultant at the Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education
THE HE PESACH ESACH SEDER EDER is one of the highlights of the Jewish
calendar. Yet, many children find the long, complicated ceremony
frustrating.
Fortunately many parts of the Seder make accommodation quite
simple. The Haggadah lays out the natural order of the Seder –
“order” is the very meaning of the word Seder – in a simple
structure that is repeated year after year. Many portions of the
ceremony are hands-on and participatory, enabling children to get
actively involved. And, the Seder is a home-based ritual, allowing
people who are willing to adapt their Seders to include everyone in
a positive way.
Adapting a Seder requires forethought and preparation. Think
about the children who are attending. What engages or distracts
them? How should the Seder look, sound and feel to enable and
encourage their participation?
Think next about the room where the Seder will be held. Is it
formal with breakable knick-knacks? Can the child see, hear, feel,
and become involved in the action?
Think, too, about the other guests at the Seder. Will they be
willing to adopt some new rituals to accommodate the children or
will they prefer a more traditional Seder?Speaking to guests prior to
the holiday can help them understand what you are trying to do.
Advance preparation will make the planning process easier.
Some ideas include:
• Listing the order of the Seder on a chart with pictures or
symbols. This helps children anticipate where they will participate
actively and when they will need to sit quietly. During the Seder,
children can move an arrow down the chart to indicate the progress
through the Hagaddah.
• Make good use of songs, stories, and poems especially
those they have learned in school. Specific ritual actions – washing,
dipping, and opening a door – accompany certain prayers or
sections of narrative. Interesting and unique foods – the shankbone,
charoset and maror – are concrete representations of complicated
concepts. Your “child-friendly” Seder should accentuate these
sections of the ceremony and provide additional opportunities for
hands-on participation and movement.
• Be sure that ritual objects made in school have prominence
on your Seder table. Most children make Seder plates, matza covers
and other objects in school. Make them a part of your Seder every
year.
• Before the Seder, talk, talk, talk! Take the time to make the
connection between concrete symbols used in the Seder and the
abstract concepts they represent. Examples appropriate to the
child’s experience, about slavery, freedom or sacrifice can increase
a child’s appreciation of the story and ceremony.
• Since a traditional Seder is usually a rather lengthy affair,
accommodation to children may call for a shorter ceremony, with
fewer sections of lengthy narrative, and an opportunity for children
to leave the table when need be. Books or quiet games can be
available, or a willing adult volunteer might direct children in more
active activities related to the holiday.
• Create a customized Haggadah in a looseleaf notebook, or
simply use one of the many excellent children’s Haggadot
available. The text should be at an appropriate reading level and the
pages should be clear and uncluttered. Pictures make each page
more illustrative of the narrative and visually appealing.
• Review specific parts with children in advance, or call on
them for a simple active role, such as washing hands or opening the
door for Elijah. A common Seder custom in many families is
reading around the table. While participation is encouraged,
catching many children unprepared can be a problem. Feeling
prepared will often enable a child to wait attentively and with
pleasant anticipation, rather than anxiety, for his moment in the
spotlight.
Talk to friends and neighbors and share ideas. Pesach is a
holiday filled with family customs. Why not adopt what works for
someone else into your own Seder?
Enjoy!
Please note this program starts before the conclusion of Shabbat. We
are sharing this information so that members of Temple Sinai will be
aware of the ongoing efforts within our community to raise money for
our local Habitat for Humanity project. We are a member of “Faith
Builders,” an interfaith initiative which will result in the building of a
house in Upper Dublin. If you would like to be involved, please contact
David Cooperberg at coopgreen@verizon.net or (215)284-4836.
Temple Sinai to Participate
in Local Habitat for Humanity Project
READ EAD
EAD THE HE DIGNITY IGNITY OF DIFFERENCE
IFFERENCE
IFFERENCE by Rabbi
Jonathan Sacks. After you’ve absorbed all there is to
learn from that book, then read The Home We Build
Together also by Rabbi Sacks. In these books, Sacks
explains that our society has become more and more
insular. With our reliance on cars, cell phones, the
internet, email, Ipods, and drive-through windows, we
could go through an entire day without having face-to
-face human interaction. How can we stay connected,
make the world a better place, and find
fulfillment? We can follow our passions to dedicate
ourselves to family and friends. We can work
together to build lasting friendships and a stronger
community within Temple Sinai and the greater
Jewish community. We can extend ourselves beyond
the comforts of our sameness and get to know the
stranger. We can collaborate--working side-by-side
with neighbors of different backgrounds--for a
common good. The stranger is not the stranger if we
get to know him or her. It has been said that the best
form of tzedakah is one where we respect the dignity
of the recipient and where the recipient would no
longer need tzedazah. Such an opportunity has
arrived. We have accepted an invitation to be a part
of an Interfaith Habitat for Humanity Build right here
in Upper Dublin. Habitat for Humanity describes
itself as a “hand up” not a “hand-out.” The recipient
of a Habitat for Humanity home works to help build
the home along with volunteers. The recipient also
pays an interest-free mortgage.
I am delighted to announce that Temple Sinai will
join 3 other synagogues and 9 churches of various
denominations and cultural backgrounds in the first
Interfaith Habitat for Humanity Build in Montgomery
County, Pennsylvania. We will help build a home on
Linden Avenue in North Hills. Groundbreaking is
scheduled to commence May 14, at 5pm. Please see
an announcement for a fundraiser/concert featuring
singers/songwriters/storytellers/educators Kim and
Reggie Harris along with performer and spiritual
leader Rabbi Jonathan Kligler—a Jewish and African
American Celebration of Freedom. This event will
take place Saturday April 4, 2009 at 7pm at
Bethlehem Baptist Church, Penllyn Pike & Dager Rd.
If you are interested in getting involved in this
wonderful project or any other Tikun Olam projects
through the Social Action Committee, please contact
JEWISH EWISH FAMILY AMILY LIVING IVING
BY JOAN WINOKUR
Purim is gone. We've blinked and Pesach is here. Homes must be
scrubbed, dishes changed and Pesach meichel recipes—those that for
years have spelled Pesach—must be unearthed.
These trappings give us a link and a lift but they're outside
ourselves. I've always thought the inner, personal, private preparation
just as important. Nisan is the birthday of the year, the month of
Pesach. It's another perfect time to reinvent ourselves.
We're not fleeing Egypt but we can flee our servitude to old ways
of thinking, acting, and interacting. As our ancestors used the Reed
Sea to cross to freedom, we can use Pesach as the bridge between our
old habits and those we would like to adopt.
Factor in everything that could make your life freer but more
meaningful, and use Pesach as the beginning of your journey towards
your new you. We'll all be on our own journeys to our new goals.
A zissen Pesach to you and yours.
MEN EN’S EN CLUB LUB CONTINUED a most successful season with its
annual Comedy Night which this year, took place in late February
and attracted a record number of attendees. This year’s program
featured comedians Chris Rich (below left) and Steve Young (left).
The Men's Club recently got together with the USY (thanks to
Shelly Shotel) to prepare our Yellow Candles to be distributed to
our Religious School students. The Yellow Candle program was
conceived to help keep alive the memory of the six million Jews
who perished in the Holocaust. It is modeled after the traditional
Jewish memorial candle that burns for 24 hours during periods of
mourning and on the anniversary of the death of a family member.
The candle's yellow wax and symbol depicting a Jewish star and
strand of barbed wire serve to remind us of the yellow arm band
which Jews were forced to wear during the Nazi regime. The photo
on the candle showing youngsters departing a
concentration camp emphasizes the importance of
teaching our youth the lessons of the Holocaust and
of remembering the six million.
Our participation in the Yellow Candle Program
allows members of our USY to receive funding to
help offset the cost of attending the USY Poland or
Eastern Europe/Israel Seminar from the FJMC.
Please remember to light your candle on Monday
evening April 20th, 2009. Candles will be available
soon in the Temple Sinai lobby.
IT IS APRIL PRIL. PRIL.
. Passover
cometh. So let’s review briefly.
Location: Egypt. 400 years
later. Joseph who? Pesky
Israelites. Harsh edict. Yochevet
pregnant. Baby Moses afloat. Hokhmah – Wisdom
Royal adoption. Moving up. Ziknah – Maturity
Prince Moses. Harsh taskmasters. Kadimah – Looking Ahead
Beating. Incensed Moses. by Asher Stutman
Payback time. Bop. Fleeing
Moses. Zipporah, a babe. Shepherd Moses. Burning bush. The
Voice. Free the Israelites. Who are you? I AM THAT I AM.
Rescuer Moses with sidekick Aaron. Snakes alive. Free my
people. Waffling Pharoah yes no yes no yes no….Plagues and
other stuff. Red lintels. First born done in. Recanting Pharoah.
Time essential. Unleavened dough. Israelites on the move. Sea
parts. Dry bottom. Israelites cross over. Sea collapses, oops,
Egyptians feed the fishes. Onward to the wilderness. Big finish.
These last two months have been a great adventure for
HAZAK and Temple Sinai congregants. Asher Naim, terrific
speaker. Purim, Purimspiel and megillah reading. The Wizard
of Oz. March joint meeting with special kudos to Cindy
Horowitz.. A successful AARP driver program thanks to Renata
Fisher. Men in the kitchen doing a superb job.
Looking ahead past Passover, get ready to enjoy the ever
popular Fran Schwartz and her musical tribute on April 26.
Fran combines wonderful musical talent with insightful
commentary to produce a can’t miss program. In May, we have
Joel Schwartz, eminent pediatric and adolescent psychiatrist and
speaker whose subject will be “Grandparenting.” OK so we’re
all experts already, but a few new tips couldn’t hurt.
Shalom everyone.
