Cessnock Skate and BMX Facilities Needs Assessment 2020 6.3 Future Skate and BMX Facilities Recommendation � Construct a Skate Dot or Spot (refer to Appendix E for a brief description and example) in Abermain. � Provide a memorial plaque at the proposed Skate Spot in dedication to the young BMX rider whom recently passed away. Action(s) � Identify and conduct a site assessment of potential sites in Abermain for a local level concrete skate and BMX facility (up to 300 m 2 ) using the suggested site selection process and criteria. Potential sites identified from stakeholder and community engagement, with Jefferies Park being the preferred by the local community, include: � Jefferies Park, Abermain (Local level Park); and � Bailey Park, Abermain (District level Park). Recommendation � Construct a District level concrete Skate and BMX facility in Branxton-Huntlee, when the proposed development is approved and underway, to accommodate for the significant projected population growth and meet the needs of active users of these facilities in the Greta-Branxton Urban Planning District. Action(s) � Identify and conduct a site assessment of potential sites in Branxton-Huntlee for a District level concrete skate and BMX facility using the suggested site selection process and criteria. Miller Park (Regional Park) was identified by stakeholders, young people and community as a site for further investigation. Recommendation � Potential future locations for skate and BMX facilities in the long term and beyond 2020 identified for further investigation include: � Heddon Greta; � Millfield-Paxton; � Kitchener. 6.4 Amenities As a minimum, all future skate and BMX facilities require: � a water bubbler/tap; � shade structure (artificial or natural) and � a rubbish bin. Larger facilities will also require: � seating for active and passive users; � shade structure (artificial or natural); � car parking; � public toilets; and Page 32
Cessnock Skate and BMX Facilities Needs Assessment 2020 � pathway access. 6.5 Management and Maintenance Recommendations � Include signage at skate parks outlining rules and regulations, and contact numbers for emergency services and Cessnock City Council. � Undertake regular and ongoing maintenance and repairs to skate and BMX facilities. 6.6 Monitor, Evaluate and Review Recommendation � Annually monitor progress of the recommendations � Conduct a comprehensive review of the needs assessment recommendations five years after implementation so they can adjust to demographic changes and shift in skate and BMX facility trends.
