Harshfield Terrace (75 units), an affordablecommunity for seniors in Quartz Hill, California,is RHF’s newest community to open.Spring 2011

From The President“Finding Our Placein God’s Plan”The Rev. Dr. James A Forbes, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of RiversideChurch, New York City, used the above title as his sermon topicfor our 50th Anniversary Worship service which was hostedby First Congregational UCC, Long Beach and attended by 450persons.We were pleased that 26 UCC Conference Ministers were withus for our 50th and we enjoyed special music by a choir of 90persons from RHF, First, Los Altos and Los Alamitos CommunityCongregational churches. Rev. Forbes’ sermon was outstandingand it had strong implications about the importance of place inour faith, our families, our homes and our vocations.I thought about how important place was for me as Senior Pastor of Peace Memorial UCC in Chicago andsince 1987 as CEO of RHF. I’ve said numerous times that in retrospect it’s clear to me that any success I’vehad came from my willingness to walk through the doors God opened before me. By accepting unsolicitedinvitations I discovered that I had wound up in the right place. On numerous occasions residents have told me that they are convinced that God led them to this place andit is the nicest place they have ever lived. One of our team members, Vice President of Treasury BrianMagnone, expressed a sentiment at a Council for Health and Human Services Annual Meeting several yearsago, which I hope many of our team members feel, when he said, “RHF is a great place to work!”Place is important and I hope you feel that you are in the right place in all aspects of your life.If you are one of our 17,000 residents, I hope that you like the place you live. If you are one of our 2600team members working in this mission, I hope that you feel you are in the right place or career track inyour vocation. If you are a member of our national or local Boards or Advisory Commission, I hope thatyou sense you are in a place where you are making a difference. And I invite all readers to find your place as a supporter of this great mission. If you accept this invitation, Iam convinced you will discover that you have found your place in God’s plan for a better world.RHF Today is published periodically for residents, families of residents, the United Church of Christ and sponsoringcongregations, staff, local board members, and friends of Retirement Housing Foundation, 911 N. Also included were commentsfrom residents like, “A great place to live!” “Excellent Staff” “Everyonehere has been wonderful, we are treated very nicely.” “I love it here, it feelslike home.” “I feel safe here and I feel that God hand-picked my apartmentfor me.” “This is the best place anyone could live.”Pam is one of the leading managers in the Midwest region, and is verywilling and eager to help train new managers and offer assistance to otherswhen needed. She regularly plans dinners and other functions, and mostrecently organized an ice cream social and gospel concert. She’s always lookingfor ways to bring her residents together. Pam and her assistant, Susan, beganhosting breakfast at the property on Saturday once a month. This has been verywelcomed by the residents, and they say that Pam makes the best pancakesthey’ve ever had!RHF is pleased to recognize Pam Jennings as 2011 Manager of the Year.Rex Chapman Award Winner“I believe that the most important thing I have done during the time I have beenon the Board of RHF was the recruiting and employment of the Rev. Bank50th Anniversary CelebrationAs a nonprofit organization RHF considers advocacy an important responsibility.Whether it is at a state or national level, advocating for programs and servicesthat help our residents maintain their independence or help our organization inits efforts to provide quality housing to older adults, low-income families andpersons with disabilities, RHF is very serious about its role as an advocate. Wemeet with elected officials throughout the country and invite them into ourcommunities to see, first hand, how their funding is improving lives. We tellthem our story and the stories of our residents. As a part of RHF’s 50th Anniversary, residents were asked to tell how livingin an RHF community has impacted their lives. Could the residents from Bishop’s Glen comeback from an embarrassing defeat at the hands of residents from The Cloisters???(If you remember correctly The Cloisters beat Bishop’s Glen by 159 points inlast year’s tournament.)It isn’t known if it was the grueling workout that the Bishop’s Glen teamendured for the past year, the homefield advantage or if the stars had justaligned correctly - but this year Bishop’s Glen came back victorious over theirCloisters counterparts - by the narrowest of margins - 1,043 to 1,039.Needless to say, a rematch, on The Cloisters’ home turf, has been demanded. It might not be a rivalry the likes of Chicago and Green Bay, but . . .Rodger Weston is shown takinghis turn at the pins.Telling The RHF StoryNational Headquarters - Long Beach, CaliforniaPrior to 1987 our symbol was three little (monopoly) houses but wewanted a symbol which better reflected RHF’s mission. Our PublicRelations Director at the time, Rev. Donald Jarman, had a friend at theagency which designed the AT&T world logo who worked with the RHFBoard and Staff to design our current logo. Our logo is a group of houses and apartment buildings facing East, West,North & South representative of the 6,000 mile expanse of our mission fromHonolulu on the West to the Virgin Islands on the East. The houses have opendoors because we want to be welcoming communities and the whole symbol isconnected by a cross, representing our faith base. We believe that everyone is achild of God and deserving of quality housing and care.Residents and others have requested logo jewelry and so we have created keyrings, charms and lapel pins. One resident took two and slipped them ontowires and created ear rings. Likewise, when team members saw a tiethat Dr. Joseph was wearing (a gift from Maggie Engelberg) with the 50thAnniversary logo designed by Ray East, they asked if they could get tiesand scarves so we have had those designed as well. We offer these at ourcost. The jewelry is $5., ties $20 and scarves $23. We are not in the jewelryor accessory business. The important thing is that if you purchase andwear any of these items and someone asks you about them, you tell theRHF story. If you are interested in purchasing one or more items, please e mail orcall the RHF National Office at 562-257-5100 and ask for Maggie Engelberg.-9-

Charitable Giving“. . . It’s An Honor To Serve Others”Making their home in Charlottesville, Virginia, long-time RHFvolunteers and donors, Ray and Caroline East have served theRetirement Housing Foundation since 1995.As RHF celebrates its 50th anniversary, we also celebratethose who have helped us along the way through their timeand support.“Sometimes our decisions are life-changing, and my joiningthe RHF Board after being approached by Sally Wright wastruly one of those decisions. I knew Sally Wright, the RHFdirector of communications, from having worked on a bookas a photographer for the Disciples of Christ whichtold the story of the denomination and many of itsAfrican American churches. She was a former newspaperreporter, and we used to talk about coveringthe news. She had suggested that it was time for theRHF board to consider adding a person with televisionmedia knowledge, and I was the one she approachedand asked if I might be interested. What a tremendoushonor it is to be able to serve others,” says Ray.Currently, serving as Chair of the board’s CharitableGiving committee, Ray worked for NBC for 36 yearsmostly in the Washington DC area, as the Art Directorand artist/photographer. He did courtroom sketchingfor several years, including some of the Watergate trials (he was inthe courtroom as the only artist the morning the burglars werearraigned). He won an Emmy for his work in television before retiringin 1999. Ray, whose nickname is “Corky”, enjoys tennis andphotography, which he still does commercially. With great pride,he personally photographs many of our communities, providingimages for our publications and corporate offices.“RHF affords us the opportunity to reach those who really needaffordable housing and actually make a home for them,” says Caroline. As an RHF Advisory Commission member, she represents RHF atcommunity events across the country and advocates on a number ofissues affecting seniors and affordable housing. Caroline worked asa teacher and guidance counselor for 27 years and recently retired inJune 2010. She enjoys volunteering for the African-AmericanTeaching Fellows in Charlottesville, as well as antiquing inher spare time.In addition to RHF, the East’s community service extends toa number of other non-profit boards in the Charlottesvillearea. Ray served on the JAUNT board for about 10 years.JAUNT provides special needs transportation for the cityof Charlottesville and four counties in Central Virginia. Healso is finishing up six years of service on Charlottesville’sSenior Center board.-22-

It’s An Honor To Serve Others” (cont.)Ray stated, “At an RHF ground breaking a year ago in Norfolk, I saidthat two of the things in my life that I was very proud of were being aVirginian and serving on the RHF board.”According to Ray, “RHF is the very best at giving safe shelter to thosewho need it most. I believe in what we do. There is a saying about charitythat I love, ‘You can’t have it if you don’t give it away.’ Such wisdom!”When Ray joined the RHF Board of Directors, the late Jean MooreWarrick, a fellow RHF board member and Circle of Friends member, shared with him, “When one of our community residents takes you bythe hand and says, ‘I don’t know where I would live if it were not forRHF’, then you know why we serve RHF and why the important workof RHF must continue after we are gone.”Taking this to heart, the Easts remain dedicated to the mission of RHF, not only for today’s residents, but fortomorrow’s as well. As a member of the Circle of Friends, Ray believes there is not a better feeling than knowing thathis planned gift will allow RHF’s mission to continue. The RHF Circle of Friends is a legacy society recognizing thosewho have provided for RHF in their estate plans through gifts that include wills, trusts, insurance policies, annuitiesor real estate.RHF is extremely humbled and grateful for the ongoing commitment of time and financial support Ray and CarolineEast give to our mission.-23-
