From the President
The RHF Mission: It’s All About People
In February RHF celebrated our 46 th Anniversary and Annual Meeting.
Our theme is “It’s All About People.” This is a theme for every year
because while we can’t perform the mission without money and
buildings, the purpose of the mission is people. If we were not serving
people, there would be so reason for our existence.
In the past year we have celebrated RHF’s 45 th Anniversary in more
than 120 locations, and we are continuing the remaining celebrations
this year. In every community I have heard stories and expressions of
gratitude about the difference our mission makes in the lives of people.
And elected officials in many locations have asked us to build and
preserve more housing.
A few years ago I started using the term “age tsunami” instead of age
wave, because the doubling of our over 65 population by 2030 is much
more than a wave. When I met with representatives and Senators in
The Vintage is published periodically for residents, families of residents, the United Churches
Rev. Laverne R. Joseph, D.D.
President & CEO
Washington, DC in March, I was pleased to hear that they had picked up the same terminology. We are
simply not prepared as a nation to address this need and we are slipping further behind each year. But it
must be addressed because the quality of life as well as the survival of people is as stake. We have a similar
shortage of affordable family housing.
Recognizing the challenge is a start. The next challenge is to turn words into actions.
It takes people to serve the needs of people and I’m grateful to our 2600 team members who serve our
16,000+ residents nationwide. I hope you realize how much you are appreciated by all of us and have a
sense of the difference you are making in the lives of other people.
This issue of the Vintage also features our volunteers. You make a big difference not only in the lives of
residents and staff but also in the larger community.
And of course our donors are also appreciated for your contributions which help to underwrite the mission.
Over the years one of my favorite songs has been “People Who Need People…are the luckiest people in the
world.” I liked the tune so much that it wasn’t until recently I thought more deeply about the words. In
reality everyone needs people. The luckiest people in the world are those who have the people they need
when they need them.
You and I are among those people. We give and we serve, and in so doing we receive and we enable other
people to be fortunate because they have the people they need when they need them.
Thank you for what you do. May we never grow weary in our mission of service.

46th Anniversary
Rex Chapman Award
Linda Listoe
Rex Chapman was active with Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF),
both in Cathedral Pioneer Church Homes in Sacramento and later with
the national Board of RHF, for more than 30 years. From 1977 to 1998, he
served on the Board of RHF, and chaired the Board from 1984 to 1989. In
1999, he received the honor of Director Emeritus. During his term as
Board Chair, he was responsible for persuading Dr. Joseph to become RHF
President and CEO.
After Mr. Chapman’s death in 2000, the RHF Board created the Rex
Chapman Award to be given, from time to time, in recognition of
outstanding service on behalf of others.
Linda was the third staff person hired by Retirement Housing Foundation.
While her initial position was that of Executive Secretary to Rev. Clark Harshfield, she found herself, over
the years, handling everything from finding sites to develop, to filing HUD applications, to working with
architects and construction companies, and going to final closings with HUD.
Her final title, Senior Vice President of Corporate Services/Corporate Secretary saw her handling all of the
legal documentation involved with creating and maintaining the status of our not-for-profit corporations.
When Linda started in 1969, there were four communities and two under construction. In her 37 years
with RHF, she experienced and participated in the phenomenal growth in our mission.
Previous award winners have been Maggie Belton from Pilgrim Tower East for her local and national
advocacy work, and the late Jean Moore Warrick, RHF Board member and Chair, for her 25 years with RHF.
For her 37 years of dedication to the RHF Mission, we are pleased to honor a special person who
helped to make the mission happen: Linda Listoe.
Friend of the Elderly Award
The Honorable Judge Thomas Jenkins
RHF recognizes the Honorable Thomas Jenkins, retired California Superior
Court Judge, with the 2007 Friend of the Elderly award for his vision and
leadership in the area of aging services.
Forty-six years ago he, and several colleagues, founded both the California
Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (now Aging Services of
California) and the American Association of Homes and Services for the
Aging (AAHSA). He was President of the AAHSA in 1966 and 1967 and a
member of its Board of Directors from 1962 to 1968.
The impetus of founding both CAHSA and AAHSA was the recognition of
future national demographics and the need to address aging services in our
state and nation. For nearly five decades, Judge Jenkins has been a voice of
wisdom in these two organizations, and he attends most annual meetings of
both ASC and AAHSA.
He has received many honors and held many memberships. He served on the Board of Directors, League of
California Cities from 1970 to 1974, was Vice Chairman and member of the National Board of Directors of Camp
Fire Girls from 1964 to 1968, President of the United Community Fund of San Francisco from 1962 to 1964,
Board of Directors of San Francisco Association for Mental Health from 1971 to 1976, and the Governor’s
Hospital Advisory Council, State of California from 1963 to 1967. He was Chairman from 1979 to 1981 and a
member of the Board of Directors of Northern California Presbyterian Homes from 1977 to 1989.
He has authored articles on aging published in national magazines, Concern and Focus.
For Judge Jenkins’ vision and accomplishments in the past and for his continued wisdom, Retirement Housing
Foundation is pleased to present him with our 2007 Friend of the Elderly award.
46th Anniversary
Resident of the Year
Catherine Veney -
North Capitol at Plymouth
Washington, D.C.
Whether it has been with members of her own family or strangers in the
community where she lives, Catherine Floyd Veney has modeled service
throughout her entire life. She has volunteered with various churches
and civic organizations, anywhere that she has seen a need.
Moving into North Capitol at Plymouth in February 2005 did nothing to
slow her down when it came to helping others.
Resident Manager June Daly says that for Thanksgiving, Ms. Veney gave
out 25 turkeys to the residents who needed them, and on Thanksgiving Day, she cooked and baked two turkeys
for Thanksgiving Dinner for North Capitol residents who did not have somewhere to go that day.
A member of the Resident Council says, “She has gospel programs, which consist of singing groups, dinners for
the various holidays, and parties in order to get the residents who don’t have places to go out of their apartments.
When it’s time for one of her planned functions, she will start cooking two or three days ahead of time preparing
a large feast. She will spend her last dime to purchase food and medicine for residents or anyone else. She will
take them places when they don’t have a ride to get there. She will pray with them and for them. She is never
too busy to help anyone whenever they call her. She is the chairperson of the Sick Committee at North Capitol
at Plymouth. She is one of a kind, because when God made her, He broke the mold.”
Retirement Housing Foundation is pleased to recognize Catherine Veney as our 2007 Resident of the Year.
Manager of the Year
Julie Lemke - Monona Meadow, Monona, WI
Julie Lemke joined the RHF team four years ago as Marketing Director for
Monona Meadows, Monona, WI. This position was created due to the 20
vacancies that existed in a 70-unit community. Within 12 months, Julie
guided Monona Meadows to 100 percent occupancy, and created such an
interest that the waiting list began to grow. As a result of her performance,
Julie was promoted to Manager when the position became vacant. Over the
past 12 months, Julie has improved the community and resident
satisfaction by having the entire building re-painted and spearheading “Project Home” which replaced
several items in the building with Energy Star equipment, ultimately saving Monona Meadows thousands
of dollars. Julie has taken her expertise on the road to other RHF communities in the North Central and
Southwest Regions.
The Executive Committee of the Monona Meadows Residents Association writes, “Julie is a great asset to
our community, and we appreciate her work with us and for us here at Monona Meadows. She is friendly
and cooperative, always answering questions and finding solutions to whatever concerns residents have on
their minds. Her knowledge and understanding of all the HUD rules and regulations is apparent. She goes
out of her way to show concern for the residents and the property alike. We want to thank her for her
management expertise and her fairness in dealing with problems. We are glad she is here with us.”
Julie is a fine example of believing that problems can be overcome and she addresses them with a positive
attitude. She helps other managers believe in themselves and, thereby, to do what needs to be done. In her
performance appraisal in September 2006, her comments included a smiley face and a note in big print that
read, “I LOVE MY JOB! THANK YOU FOR ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES.”
Retirement Housing Foundation is pleased to recognize Julie Lemke as 2007 Manager of the Year.
46th Anniversary
Administrator of the Year
Tonya Turner - Pilgrim Tower North & East
Pasadena, CA
Tonya Turner began working with RHF at the national headquarters
office in Long Beach as an Occupancy Specialist, on a temporary basis,
in 2003. In 2004, she was promoted to Administrator of Pilgrim
Tower North and Pilgrim Tower East, Pasadena, which consists of 416
apartments for older adults. She manages an on-site staff of 18
persons.
Over the past year, she has been involved in the $6 million rehabilitation of Pilgrim Tower North, and is
preparing for an equally large rehabilitation at Pilgrim Tower East. Her Regional Manager Chapin Hemphill
writes that during this same time period, she completed a tax credit and bond conversion of the financing
program for PTN. During this process, four re-certifications were required of the residents. Her ability to
communicate with the wide array of nationalities, personalities, and races that make up the tenancy allows for
a unique harmony.
Tonya writes, “The housing field takes a lot of effort. If one does not feel he or she is improving the quality
of life for others, and enjoys doing it, that person is in the wrong field. Being a housing administrator takes
a lot of patience, commitment, concern, continued education, and respect for the people one is serving.”
She is also very active with Pasadena community events and the local Councilperson’s office.
We are pleased to recognize Tonya Turner as 2007 Administrator of the Year.
News From Our Communities
William Clarke talking
with a docent at the
Moffett Field Museum.
Auburn Ravine Terrace - Auburn Ravine, California
You would never know that William Clarke, a resident at Auburn Ravine
Terrace was a living national treasure - but that is just how Richard Van
Treuren, an expert of lighter-than-air transportation and editor of “A Century
of Airships” describes him.
Clarke is the last remaining living crew member of the great airships, a part
of the U.S. Navy’s lighter-than-air program which lasted from 1921 - 1935.
He was a ground crew member of the USS Akron, a giant airship that sank tailfirst
in the Atlantic, leaving three survivors out of a crew of 76. He was also in
Lakehurst, N.J. when the Hindenburg zeppelin crashed in a fiery ball of flames.
While he was off-shift at the time, he would go on duty guarding the wreckage
the next day.
He was a crewmember of the last airship, the Macon, on its last flight out of
Moffett Field in northern California in February of 1935. Macon was 400,000
pounds and 785 feet long (four times the size of today’s Goodyear blimps) and
was powered by eight 560 hp engines built in Germany. It crashed into the
Pacific Ocean during a routine return trip from the Channel Islands, all but two crew members survived.
He was recently interviewed by a German TV crew, filming a documentary that will appear on German TV
in the next year. Clarke has been told that interview footage could end up on the History Channel, Discovery
Channel and BBC projects centered around exploration of the Macon’s wreckage, which was found in 1990.
Colonial Heights - Florence, Kentucky
Jutta Hibrandt lived in Florida with her daughter before moving to
Colonial Heights and Gardens in September of 2005.
While she was in Florida she had been a professional ballroom dance
instructor until her early 70’s. She competed in dance competitions
until the age of 75, when she retired.
At the age of 85, she began dancing again, as a way to stay physically active.
It was her dance instructor that talked her into dancing competively again.
In the past year, they have competed in two major competitions and one
exhibition. They placed first in the Quick Step and Fox Trot.
What makes this all the more amazing is that Jutta is legally blind.
Celebrating Life! (continued from the front page)
Bishop’s Glen - Holly Hill, Florida
A Christmas tradition that started years ago with the lighting of
300 luminaries on the main driveway in Bishop’s Glen has grown
to now include more than 1400 throughout the entire community.
More than 30 residents and staff make the luminaries by hand; a
paper sandwich bag, filled with about an inch of sand in which a
candle is placed.
Every night, at 6 pm, volunteers light the candles and they burn
for 3 - 4 hours.
It is an event that brings the entire community together and leaves
a lasting impression for the entire year
Perls says the key to a long and healthy life is simple; don’t smoke, get lots of exercise and sleep, and eat a
balanced diet. Another common feature appears to be the ability to deal well with stress.
We can’t tell you that our centenarians have paid attention to the above-mentioned suggestions - but they
have definitely done something right!
Happy Birthday to all of you - may you be surrounded by those you love and who love you, and may your
days be filled with laughter.
Capital Court - Corydon, Indiana
News From Our Communities
The residents of Capital Court have taken on the job of nursemaid to
Lily, the baby goat. Lily had a traumatic birth and it was questionable
as to whether she was going to make it during the first week of her life.
Shelley Hoten, the housekeeper at Capital Court and Lily’s owner, needed
to feed her every two hours so she brought her to work, keeping Lily in
her car and occasionally checking on her. It wasn’t long before word was
out that Lily needed some tender loving care and the line of residents
volunteering to help grew.
For the next few days, as Lily started to take her first steps, it wasn’t
unusual to see a baby goat, in a diaper and pink jumpsuit, in the community
room with five or six of the residents watching over her like proud parents.
Lily is now home with Dandalion, her real mom, on the farm, doing quite well.
Maple City Square - LaPorte, Indiana
The Holiday Party at Maple City Square this year had the usual . . .
wonderful food (including a 21 pound turkey), wonderful friends
(including recently retired staff member Jean Fain) and the winner of
RHF’s Resident Survey, MCS resident William Gatzke.
William filled out the Resident Survey form that is mailed to all RHF
residents every two years and automatically got his name into a drawing for a
Wal-Mart gift certificate.
William and Jan Roberts, his case manager from the LaPorte County
Council on Aging, went on a shopping spree just in time for Christmas.
Madison Heritage Apartments - Madison, Indiana
Madison Heritage Apartments boasts two very talented artists under
its roof.
Vivian Wood is 90 years old and is a self-taught artist. She paints for
enjoyment and her paintings represent what she has seen from her
travelling across the United States, visiting her four sons.
Carl “Rod” Troyer is a man of many talents; artist, musician and
actor. He used his artistic talents when he was a trial sketch artist
and while sketching people at fairs and festivals throughout the
United States. He has played keyboard in country western bands
and appeared in various television westerns, among them -
Gunsmoke.
Lately, his artistic talents have been put to use at a local restaurant,
where the owner had commissioned Troyer to sketch caricatures
of his “regulars.” More than 100 of those drawings now hang on
the walls - becoming conversation pieces while patrons wait for
their food.
Volunteer of the Year
Celebrating Volunteers!
For any non-profit, volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization. Volunteers play a vital role in the day-today
lives of the residents living in our communities. This year RHF recognized the outstanding efforts of two
volunteers from two unique RHF communities at our Annual Meeting in February. The following pages
acknowledges the efforts of the thousands of volunteers that make the lives of our residents that much richer.
Tom Baumann - Angelus Plaza in Los Angeles,CA
Thomas W. Baumann is the Director of Physician Development at Good
Samaritan Hospital and currently President of the Angelus Plaza Advisory
Council. During the past seven years, he has also worked with Angelus Plaza
in his role as the hospital’s Director of Business Development.
Jeffrey Winston, Angelus Plaza’s Community Relations Coordinator,
writes, “Mr. Baumann has helped to empower the Council by challenging
each member to raise the bar in terms of attainable goals and enhancing
the public awareness. Aside from corporate sponsorship of our Senior
Talent Show, Inaugural Art Auction, and providing partial support for the
African American Heritage celebration, Tom has been a catalyst, leading
by example through his personal involvement.” Under his stewardship in
2006, the Advisory Council held a highly successful art auction and
reception called “Connecting Our Seniors.” This collaborative effort
raised over $26,000. Proceeds will directly benefit the seniors, since the
revenue will be used to upgrade the Bert MacLeech Computer Learning Center.
He serves as a board member of the Elizabeth Center for Cancer Detection, and previously at Holy Redeemer
Catholic Church in Montrose. In addition, Tom has helped establish a medical missionary service, AMNET
International, a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to provide ambulances and other critical healthcare
equipment, education, and resources to the people of Guam and Micronesia.
We are pleased to recognize Tom Baumann as 2007 Volunteer of the Year.
Volunteer of the Year
Winona Balch - Miracle Manor in Edna,TX
Winona met her husband, Sonny, as a senior in high school, and said she knew
they would marry the first night they met at the College Christian fellowship.
They have been married for 47 years, have two children, three grandchildren, and
one great-grandchild. After finishing a degree in engineering, her husband
decided to become a minister.
She became acquainted with Viola Mendiola, our Manager at Miracle Manor
Apartments, in 1969, when her husband became the full time minister at the
Church of Christ on Apollo Drive in Edna, Texas. This 23-apartment HUD 202
opened in 1989.
Winona and her husband hold Bible classes and song services with the residents at
Miracle Manor. After Winona retired as Post Master from the U.S. Postal Service three years ago, she continued with
monthly devotionals, lunches, and games for the residents. Sonny conducts the Bible classes, but Viola says that
Winona pretty much single-handedly cooks and serves the meals for all the residents. During the two months that
she was ill and not able to cook, she made sure her husband brought the monthly meals for the residents. She also
sends a birthday card to every resident at Miracle Manor.
Manager Viola Mendiola writes, “Winona is one of the kindest, most generous persons I’ve ever known. She has not
allowed her sickness to deter her from serving our residents. They look forward to their monthly bingo/Bible study/
luncheon. The fellowship is awesome.”
RHF is pleased to recognize Winona Balch as 2007 Volunteer of the Year.
Volunteer Recognition
Our residents are a vital part of the areas they live in. Whether it is the residents of La Mirada Vistas (La
Mirada, CA), volunteering to be “victims” in city-wide safety drills; handing out water at the Los Angeles
Marathon (Rio Vista Village - CA); stuffing Easter eggs for the Jaycee’s annual egg hunt (La Fontaine
Center - Huntington, IN); or starting a cancer support group for seniors (Pioneer Towers - Sacramento,
CA) - our residents see a need and step right in to fill it.
300 Main - Estacada, Oregon
For the past ten years, the 300 Main-liners (a group of residents
from 300 Main) have visited the Grace House Assisted Living
community in Estacada on a monthly basis to lead its residents in
a sing-along and provide a few hours of companionship. They
bring along a book of favorite songs and have a special song sheet
for every month.
Getting ready to go on their March excursion is (l to r): Elaine Piercy,
Dora Jane McCary, Celenia Garcia, 300 Main Manager Linda
Forsberg, Lillian Johnsen, Lorraine Fasciona, and Kathryn Ross.
Pioneer Towers - Sacramento, California
In 1992, at the age of 71, Shirley O’Key found herself in Albania as a
Peace Corps volunteer. It had been a struggle to get there - convincing
the Peace Corps that she wasn’t too old for the task. They had first
rejected her (that age thing), but she demanded an interview and
eventualy received an assignment.
She taught English as a second language to high school students in
three different cities - Tirana, Elbasan and Sarande.
“The prior government did a couple of things right,” O’Key said. “There
was a school in every village, they had power and they had television.”
Last year she returned. She visited the schools she had taught in and
spoke with many of the teachers she had worked with during her first
visit. From that visit she has a new endeavor - collecting books (in English)
to send to the schools in Albania.
Maple City Square - LaPorte, Indiana
The annual Flu Clinic at Maple City Square is a long established
event in the LaPorte community.
Each year the word has gone out that seniors can obtain shots at this
site even when vaccine is in short supply. 2006 was no exception.
By the end of October, many medical offices had not received their
supply of flu vaccine due to shipping problems from the distributor.
The Visiting Nurses of America (VNA) made a special effort to have a
supply for those who would be coming to Maple City Square’s site.
This is a collaborative effort on the part of numerous community groups throughout the LaPorte area. The
VNA, working out of LaPorte Hospital provides the supply of flu vaccine and the nurses to administer the
shots; the Maple City Square staff gets the word out about the clinic, fields phone calls from neighboring
cities and sets up the community room for the seniors who come; and community volunteers make sure the
paperwork is correct and things run smoothly throughout the day.
Volunteer Recognition
Thank You Volunteers!
Our volunteers throughout the nation are special to us. Over 2,325 persons graciously gave of their time
volunteering a total of 94,000 hours in 2006 to RHF individual communities! (The hours for meetings are not
included for the corporate and local community Board Members & Advisory Commission which would
increase the totals significantly.) Here is a partial listing of names:
Aging Services
of California
Honors Don King
Aging Services of California (ASC)
is honoring RHF Board Chair Don
King as Trustee of the Year.
In 1979, as a result of his own
mother’s advancing age and seeing
the lack of quality facilities for
seniors, Don King became
involved with the Cathedral
Pioneer Church Homes as a volunteer. He soon took on the
leadership role of President for that Board and oversaw the boards
of Pioneer House, Pioneer Towers and Trinity House, which
represented a total of 256 residential apartments, 86 assisted living
units and 79 skilled nursing care beds.
Don has served on RHF’s National Board of Directors since being
elected in 1987, taking on the role of Vice-Chair in 1994 and
becoming Chair in 2005. He continues to serve Pioneer House
and Pioneer Towers.
Throughout his years of service, he has actively pursued many
opportunities to learn more about the aging services field and has
become involved in the ASC and AAHSA, attending many of
their conferences. He has been called upon by AAHSA to be on a
governance panel and is currently enrolled, with RHF’s
CEO, in the AAHSA Governance Series.
