RHF Honors
Those Making a Difference
People and organizations making a difference in the lives of RHF residents
were honored at the 47th Annual Dinner and Awards ceremony in February.
Union Bank of California Foundation and its President & CEO, Carl Ballton,
were honored with the 2008 Friend of the Elderly Award for outstanding
committment to the elderly.
Along with supporting many of our programs, RHF received a grant from UBC
Foundation to fund the 40th Anniversary publication, Memories of our
Past, Inspiration for our Future, which contained written pieces from board
and team members and, most importantly, residents telling about the difference
the RHF mission has made in their lives. In total, the foundation has given
almost $150,000 over the 11 years they have been supporting RHF’s efforts.
A Real Asset
Grace Jirovetz, a resident at Valley View Apartments in Manitowoc, Wisconsin
was named the 2008 Resident of the Year. Her tireless work for her fellow
residents and the larger community of elderly in the Manitowoc area has
been ongoing since she moved into Valley View in 2002.
Grace goes to the Manitowoc Senior Center daily to prepare meals for the
Meals On Wheels program, along with working in the gift shop and serves
on its Board. Debbi Tasch, the Program Coordinator for the Manitowoc Senior Center says, “I’ve known
Grace Jirovetz for over 22 years. I can truly say that she is one of the most gentle, loving, and giving persons
I have ever known. She is a joy and a real asset to the Manitowoc Senior Center.”
And we are happy she calls Valley View Apartments her home.
Turning a Community Around
Robert Mauer garnered recognition as 2008 Administrator of the Year for his work at Auburn Ravine Terrace (ART),
a market rate community in Auburn, California. “His management style makes residents feel Auburn Ravine
Terrace is their home and not just a place to live,” say members of his Resident Council.
Auburn Ravine Terrace Board President Cindy Schiefelbein adds the board’s wholehearted support for
Bob’s nomination. She says, “I personally have been familiar with ART since the late 1980’s. When Bob
came to ART, he began the relentless task of turning the facility around, placing it on a firm financial
foundation, taking care of needed repairs and updates, and making it once again the premiere three-level
facility here in Auburn.”
Doing The Ordinary
Makes A Difference
This issue of The Vintage features our many volunteers who help to
make the mission possible.
At RHF’s 47th Anniversary Banquet. Beatrice Flucas was
recognized as our Volunteer of the Year. (See story and picture.)
In her acceptance remarks she said, “I’m really not sure why I should be
recognized. What I do is just ordinary.”
We all need to remember that it is the ordinary things people do that
make a BIG difference in the lives of others.
In my address to our Management Conference I shared the philosophy of the late Charles Schultz, creator of the
comic strip “Peanuts”. He asks us to take a little test:
1. Name the 5 wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last 5 Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last 5 winners of the Miss America Pageant.
4. Name 10 people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade’s World Series winners.
While some of us can remember the names of some of these persons whose achievements were worthy of praise,
after a while their names vanish into the background of our memories.
Now see if you can remember these names:
1. Name a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name 3 friends who helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name 5 people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of 5 people you enjoy spending time with.
The lesson: The people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, money, or
awards. They are the ones who care. They are people who make a difference by doing ordinary things.
A big THANK YOU to all our volunteers! Your ordinary actions make an extraordinary difference! And may we all
follow your example!
47th Anniversary
Sharing Her Talents
Beatrice Flucas knows what it means to give back to the community you live in.
Her volunteer experience spans a lifetime of seeing a need in the community and
sharing her talents with others. She was recognized as RHF’s 2008 Volunteer of
the Year for her work on behalf of the residents of North Capitol at Plymouth.
Beatrice lives in Baltimore, but comes to North Capitol at Plymouth twice a week
to teach sewing and arts & crafts. She brings all the supplies needed for the projects
and, sometimes, even brings lunch!
Beatrice writes, “Thinking again of those who have helped and blessed my
life, the list is long. Topping the list is God. We are all born with a gift, and
it is up to us what we do with it.”
Doing the Little Extra Things
Linda Forsberg’s 13 years as Manager of 300 Main in Estacada, Oregon
were recognized when she was named as RHF’s 2008 Manager of the Year.
Bruce Burke, her regional manager says,“Her many ties with residents
and her community involvement have made Linda a well-known personality
and a force in the small community of Estacada.”
Her residents will tell you,”She is never too busy to do that little extra that
makes us all happy to call 300 Main our home.”
Congratulations to all, your committment helps RHF and its mission of
providing affordable housing for older adults, economically disadvantaged
families and persons with disabilities.
Celebrating Love
Charles Major Manor - Shelbyville, Indiana
Love was in bloom this past Valentine’s Day when eight couples said their
wedding vows in the community room at Charles Major Manor (CMM).
The event was the brainchild of Scott Spahr, CMM’s manager. “I wanted a
way to reintroduce the community of Shelbyville to Charles Major Manor,”
Spahr stated.
Five couples said their vows for the first time in front of the mayor of
Shelbyville, Scott Furgeson, who performed the nuptials. Three other couples
renewed their vows - two of the those couples had been married for 40 years.
“Couples needed to do all of the legalities, make sure they’re not closely
related and get their wedding licenses on their own before the event,”
Spahr said.
A community room decorated like a Las Vegas-style wedding chapel, a
professional photographer taking pictures, a wedding cake, flowers and
gift basket were all part of the ceremonies for a small fee of $125. More
than $600 was raised for the Resident Fund that provides activites for
CMM’s residents.
Residents helped decorate the community room and stayed around to
enjoy the festivities. There are already plans to repeat this event next year.
A Galaxy of Stars
Gateway, Gateway Gardens, and Los Arcos - Poway, California
In October of 2007 Margie Rauen, Administrator at Gateway and Gateway
Gardens, and her staff were faced with the daunting challenge of evacuating
200 residents from their communities as wildfires raged around them.
It began with a reverse 911 call from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department at
midnight, telling employees to prepare for the possibility of evacuation. In
the nine hours following that call; supplies were packed, paperwork was
organized, multiple days of medications were prepared for the assisted
living residents, and equipment was readied for that possiblity.
By 9 o’clock residents were boarding buses or using their personal cars
(loaded with residents who didn’t drive) for evacuation to a local highschool.
By the time the last busload of residents left, they could not see past the
property line due to the thick smoke coming up over the mountain top
directly behind the community.
Mira Mesa High School was the site they were evacuated to and that is where
residents’ family members were allowed to come and pick up their loved
ones. The Red Cross provided two classrooms for the Gateway evacuees,
along with food, water and juices. Target donated blankets and pillows, and the
Marines from Camp Pendleton brought in cots. For two days this would be home for
the remaining 34 residents and the seven staff members who stayed with them.
Los Arcos residents found themselves in much the same predicament. Interim
manager Dolores Peters and her staff managed to get everyone to safety and wait
out the firestorm. When they were allowed to return home, they found things
covered in soot but otherwise untouched.
In January, Dr. Joseph honored the residents and staff of all three communities;
Los Arcos, The Gateway and Gateway Gardens, for the teamwork they displayed
throughout the crisis.
A Town Hall Meeting
Madison Heritage Apartments - Madison, Indiana
U.S. Representative Baron Hill visited the residents of Madison Heritage
Apartments to explain the federal government’s economic stimulus package
and how to insure that they would receive their $300 rebate.
He brought with him the forms residents needed and instructions on how to fill
them out. While a deadline has not be set as to when
the forms needed to be turned in, he urged residents
to get their forms in before the Fall and said the last
checks will be written December 30th.
A Dream Come True
Hollyview - Los Angeles, California
Milka Ilyasova, originally from Azerbaijan, applied for
her United States citizenship almost three years ago -
filling out the application, getting finger printed (twice,
actually) and doing all that was necessary.
Then she waited for Immigration Services to call her for her interview.
And she waited.
Then she went to Hollyview’s Service Coordinator, Varsenik Bzhikyan,
and asked her to help her find out what was wrong. Bzhikyan contacted
Congresswoman Diane Watson’s office and began working with a
staff person who specializes in immigration issues.
Three months and numerous letters and phone calls later, Ilyasova
had her interview on January 2 and was granted her U.S. Citizenship.
Congratulations, Milka!
A Special Visitor
The Heartland - Peoria, Illinois
RHF’s community managers are called upon to handle a variety of situations,
but when The Heartland’s manager, Kathy Jordan, received a call from Illinois’
Governor Blagojevich’s office, asking The Heartland to host a press conference,
she was at a loss for words.
Three days later, the governor was in their community room, along with
approximately 25 members of the Illinois’ media and 40 Heartland residents,
announcing his plan to allow Illinois elderly to ride public
transportation for free.
“I just thought it was the right thing to do . . . to give all
our seniors a chance to be able to ride public transportation
for free,” Blagojevich said.
The governor had issued a so-called “amendatory” veto to
a transit funding package, demanding that the Legislature
agree to allow free transportation for older adults throughout
the state before he would agree to bail out the Chicago
transit system.
New Community
Welcome to Columbus!
Farrfield Manor, RHF’s newest community, was dedicated on
April 8th. More than 100 people witnessed the ceremony, took
tours of the community and enjoyed a wonderful barbeque lunch
- Georgia style!
State Senator Ed Harbison, Paul Diegnan (Director of Operations
and Support from HUD’s Atlanta office), Mrs. Addie Gardner
(first resident to move into Farrfield Manor), Florence Webb (RHF
Project Manager for construction of Farrfield) Dr. Laverne Joseph,
Aretha Richards (Farrfield’s Manager) and Jeff Ferguson (RHF
Regional Manager for the East Coast) participated in the Ribbon
Cutting ceremony.
Wellcare of Georgia underwrote the cost of the event and donated a
Bingo machine and supplies to the residents.
This community is RHF’s fourth community in the state of Georgia
(Benson Manor in Smyrna, Dogwood Apartments in Milledgeville, and
Ingleside Manor in Macon) and the first community in Columbus.
Farrfield Manor is a three-story apartment community specifically
designed for older adults who are at least 62 years of age. There
are 74 one-bedroom units and one two-bedroom manager’s
unit. Four of the units are handicap accessible designed to
benefit the mobility impaired and one unit is provided for those
who are hearing and/or visually impaired.
Farrfield Manor features a community room with a party
kitchen to be used by the residents for a variety of social,
educational, and recreational activites. The entry lobby
and lounge provides a friendly environment for the residents
to socialize.
There are computer rooms equipped with computers for the
residents to use and a crafts room accommodates wet and dry crafts.
A game area provides opportunities for resident socialization, and
an exercise area affords residents the ability to exercise within the
security and convenience of their own community. There is also a
laundry room equipped with coin-operated washers and dryers and
folding tables enabling the residents to do their laundry on site.
The typical unit design provides one bedroom, a kitchen
with a pass-through counter, refrigerator, range, and vent.
The mobility impaired, accessible units have roll-in
showers for ease of access for those residents in
wheelchairs. They also have appropriate appliances,
counter and sinks, and turning radius to meet the special
needs of the mobility impaired.
Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless,
but because they’re priceless.
- Sherry Anderson
Volunteers
Volunteers Who Lead
As a governing Board, the Retirement Housing Foundation
Board of Directors ensures that RHF remains true to its
mission and vision of providing housing to older adults,
economically disadvantaged families and people with
disabilities.
At this time there are ten members on the Board. Dr. Kawata
and Mr. Jahrling are from Hawaii; Mr. Masuda and Dr.
Sexton are from Southern California; Mr. King and Mr.
Simington are from Northern California; Dr. Trnka and
Mrs. Dremstedt are from Indiana; Mr. East is from Virginia
and Mrs. Potter is from Vermont. While they may come
from various parts of the country, they also represent a
variety of ethnic and professional backgrounds while
sharing a common goal; maintaining RHF’s national role as
a leader in affordable housing.
RHF Board with Dr. Joseph
The Board is made up of a simple majority of people who are members of the United Church of Christ. Serving
on the Board is purely voluntary and there is no monetary compensation.
During an average year, the Board will meet five times – this includes a visit to RHF communities once a year.
Throughout the year, numerous teleconferences are held with Dr. Joseph and senior staff members to bring the
Board up-to-date on various projects and/or items that need to be approved; they will attend conferences on the
state and national level to keep them abreast of what is happening in the field; and many will visit RHF
communities within or near their home state on their own time. At various times during the year some members
are working with RHF senior staff in seeking building sites for future RHF communities; working with local city
councils, county boards of supervisors and other housing planners; and, also working with their local RHF
communities. Some Board members will spend up to two months a year on RHF activities.
This is a reprint of Board Chair, Don King’s letter in RHF’s 2007 Annual Report.
Picture Perfect
If it is true that a picture says a thousand words, then the Public Relations
Department for RHF is blessed to have a team of talented volunteers who
stand behind a camera and speak volumes.
Ray East serves on the National Board of Directors for Retirement Housing
Foundation, and if that wasn’t enough, in his spare time has the task of going
out into the communities and taking pictures of our residents. His work can
be seen every time you visit RHF’s National Offices - he is the primary photographer for
“The Faces of RHF” display. “I have the wonderful job of meeting and talking with residents
throughout the country,” Ray will tell you.
Judy Moore’s volunteer role of photographer is one of many that she has at the national
office. Her gracious attitude of taking on any job that is given her helps immensely
in the running of the Public Relations office.
Anastacio Cubos works in the Information Technology Services department at RHF
but is called upon quite often for picture-taking duties of events that occur throughout
the year in the national office.
Like the volunteers who help in various capacities throughout the organization, the
service these volunteers perform is priceless.
-7-
Volunteers
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful,
committeed citizens can change the world; indeed,
it’s the ony thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead’s (U.S. Anthropologist 1901 - 1978) statement has been proven true over and over again. The
difference volunteers make in RHF, its mission, and the daily lives of its residents is witnessed time and
time again.
Grandma Ruth
Monona Meadows - Monona, Wisconsin
Ruth Gierach recently received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award from
RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) of Dane County for her more than 6,000
hours of volunteer service to Kennedy Elementary School and their Foster
Grandparent Program.
“Grandma Ruth,” as she is called by the kindergarten and first grade students,
helps with learning to write their names, sounds of the alphabet, and later
to read books on their own. She helps with the school’s music program as well.
Over the past ten years, Ruth has watched many of these children grow up
before her eyes and has become a reliable staple at the school. Her first students
are in high school now.
As a mother of five, grandmother of nine, and great-grandmother of one, Ruth loves children and has always
had an interest in teaching. She sees her work at Kennedy Elementary as a chance to finally achieve her dream.
A Woman of Many Talents
Madison Heritage Apartments - Madison, Indiana
Faye King has lived at Madison Heritage Apartments (MHA) for six years. At
the age of 90 her volunteer activities include helping the Red Cross Blood Bank
and various assignments that she gets with RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program).
This February, Faye decided to take on the task of planting the community’s
flower beds. With tulip bulbs and a variety of other flowers in hand, Faye
worked in the garden area (after Madison’s maintenance man, Jack, had gone
through it with a tiller), planting the flowers and putting edging
around the flower beds.
After completing that task, she said she wanted to try her hand at
painting “Barn Quilts” - wooden squares, brightly painted, that
are popping up throughout the area. After they are painted, these
squares are then mounted on fences as decoration.
MHA is looking forward to a garden full of flowers and already
have “lookers” who are driving by and stopping to gaze at the
brightly decorated fences that now border their community.
Volunteers are the life-blood of any non-profit organization and it is wonderful to see so many
who contribute to making our organization and our communities what they are today - vibrant and
growing. To all that do make a difference on a daily basis - thank you.
Volunteers
“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but the one thing I know; the only
ones among you who will really be happy are those who will have sought
and found how to serve...”
-Albert Schweitzer
Our volunteers throughout the nation are special to us. Over 2040
persons graciously gave of their time volunteering a total of 91,000
hours in 2007 to RHF individual communities! (The hours for meetings
are not included for the more than 300 national and local community
Board Members & Advisory Commission members which would
increase the totals significantly.) Here is a partial listing of names:
Staff of California State Controller’s Office
joy to the residents of Pioneer House in
Sacramento, California.
Arriving at noon, they sang Christmas
carols in the first and sixth floor dining
“When you become detached mentally from yourself and concentrate on helping
other people with their difficulties, you will be able to cope with your own more
effectively. Somehow, the act of self-giving is a personal power-releasing factor.”
Welcome New Member of RHF Circle of Friends
RHF inducts special contributors into our RHF Circle of Friends when they inform us of an estate
planned gift or a bequest is received that furthers the mission of serving people of RHF or benefits
residents at an RHF community. We welcome the following new members:
Mrs. Toshiko Okazaki Fukuda lived in Hawaii and was aware of the good work that RHF does. She passed away
in December and surprised RHF with a bequest in her estate planning.Thank you Mrs. Toshiko Fukuda.
Paula E. Jameson started with RHF in 1999. She is RHF’s Director of Fund Development and works at our National
Headquarters. Believing deeply in the RHF mission, she has included RHF in her estate planning which will
benefit our residents through the Jean Moore Warrick Endowment for Resident Benevolence Fund. Thank you
Ms. Paula E. Jameson
We are grateful to Mrs. Eveleth M. Miller a long-time resident of Plymouth Square, Stockton, CA who created
a legacy in her estate planning that will benefit the residents at Plymouth Square for generations to come. Mrs.
Miller passed away in December at 103. Thank you Mrs. Eveleth “Evie” Miller
The RHF Circle of Friends is our legacy society. There are many ways to qualify for membership, such as RHF gift
annuities that provide lifetime income to the donor, life insurance, real estate gifts, charitable remainder trusts,
and gifts from pension fund assets and/or simply including RHF in your Will or Trust.
We are grateful for our RHF Circle of Friends members:
Seven Ways to Remember RHF
There are many ways to remember RHF in your estate plans, and you may be surprised to discover how
inexpensive most of these are to accomplish. Here are seven options to consider:
1. Amend an existing insurance policy to add RHF as an additional beneficiary. You
could also purchase a new policy for RHF’s benefit.
2. Visit your personnel office and ask to amend your group life insurance policy or
retirement plan to add RHF as one of your beneficiaries.
3. Instruct your lawyer to prepare a simple, inexpensive codicil to your existing will,
creating a bequest for RHF.
4. If you’re over 65 and disappointed with the income you are receiving from your long-term
stocks or your certificates of deposit, consider RHF’s Charitable Gift Annuity program (see
inside back cover of this newsletter). Besides providing attractive tax benefits, this easy-toaccomplish
gift may reward you with high interest rates on payments.
5. Deed your house to RHF and continue to live in it. Your income tax savings from the gift
may cover the legal costs.
6. Leave written or verbal instructions for your surviving spouse to include RHF when
redrawing his or her will.
7. If you have a sizable estate, let us show you how a charitable trust may benefit both you
and RHF. Again, the tax advantages are significant and may offset any legal costs.
Some of the gift arrangements are revocable and others cannot be changed once established. Some work better
with cash and others with appreciated assets such as stocks. There are many variations, enough so that a giving
plan can be tailored to your needs, desires and capabilities.
