Karl Joder, a researcher from Ludwigphafen/Rhein, Germany, has researched the Europ,r:an Joder families for many years. The following article is based on his many notes, brochures, and chans. The surname of Yoder is derived from the Alemannic given name "Theodor," derived from a Greek word meaning "man of God." The finr known bishoo in Swizerland was Saint Theodorus, who died abour 393 A.D. His name was later changed to Sainr Jodc,r in rhe German-speaking sections of Swizerland, where ir continues to be prwalent today. Alrcady in the fourth and fifrh centurics, rhe.frxlers are known to have sertled on rhe right shore of rhc Emmc River on what is still known roday as'.Joder Hubel," 'Joder 'fhis or Hill" (elwation 9,870 feer). hill was dweloped inro a walled srronghold ro prorecr JcxJer clans thLroughout rhe years. On a 1384 tax register for rhe small village of Hurtwil, Ulli Joder and his son, Heini Joder, are recorded as thc highesr raxed familic. According ro various Gerrnan knights' records, E.lsi Zaugg, daughrer of Blacksnrith perer Zaugg of Sumiswald, gave a large trac-r fronr her ertate ro the German knights. Becaue of an unusually hard plague that probably caused the death of several of Ulliis and Elsi's chil&en, tradirion stares rhar rhis gifr of land nray have been a roken of graritude for sparing onc of her chil&en. Ulli's and Elsi's only known son, Heini Jodcr, nrovrt about 1385 ro Sreffisburg, Switzerland, in rhe southern part of the Emmenral. The Joders lived here for approximarely eleven generations before the Joders who joined the WiedertaUt'er, or Anabaptrsr, movrnrenr were forced to leave their homeland in search of relieious frecdom. The Steffisburg Joders, primarily farmers, were also involved in a variery of rrades and servicc in civil adminisrration offices. In 1428 a Jost Joder served as govemor at Laueren near Thun. Accounts of ]oders involved in rhe Anabaprisr movenlenr includc Hcinijoder, teacher and preacher, who was arrested and imprisoned in Basel in 1531. Karl Joder's rcsearch al.o revcali a number o( joder familier who migared ro the Alsace or ro rhc Pfalz and larer ro America. Karl Joder rracc his ancesrry ro Ulli Jodcr, lxrrn about 134z0 in Hutrwil, Swirzerland, and m:uried to Elsi Zaugg/Zo. Balrhasar Jqls, b. 1525 ar a. Barbaa Steffiiburg Joda, b. Mat. B, 1644 m. Anna m.
