Issue No. TiIE ORIGINS OF THE OI,EY VAILEY YODERS YODER NEWSLETTER by Dr. Don Yoder In the surnmer of 1950 f taught at lhe summer school of Colurnbia University and earned enough money to nake my first trip to Europe. ft was a pilgrimage which took ne to the old homefands of the European Yoders-- the Palatinate, whence they emigrated, and Swi-tzerland their original home. fncluded was my first visit to Steffisburg in Canton Bern, which I was able l-ater to identify as the birthplace of my fi.rst American Yoder ancestor, Hans Yoder (I572-L742) of the oley Va1ley. I had always been interested in the history of ny famj.1y, since those happy childhood summers whj.ch I epont or _9,I. There were German books and Taufscheins and o1d deeds and other papers from tbe pa6t. Ivly father and his brothers and sisters were interested in history, and they treasured a sketch of the family wriLten by their cousin who was editor of the Shamokin Timee that traced it to the oley Val1ey in Berks Countlr lennsylvania, to !{ans ano Yost Yoder the enigrant brothers who were the first Yoders to come to Pennrs Woods. When I became interested in our famllyrs origins, rny father encouraged me. I,{hen I wae a boy ny father bought ne a wonderful book, Annals of the CIey Valley (Reading, 1926)t by the lleverend F.C. CroJ-I,D.D., a Lutheran minister and 1oca1 historian. This book had a chapter on the Ctey Yoders (pp.8f-84) which f read and reread. (Eventually I corrected the fcw nistakes the gooil pastor had madel for exanple, he sklpped a generation in his tree of the llans Yodcr descendants.) North of grandmotherrs farn was the Mahantongo Va]1ey. !4any tJ.meo my father took rne there to visit the older cousj.n6, who talked Dutch and brought out their old family papers. We read and copied the Gernan inscriptions in the churchyard of the St.Jacobts (Ilswerterrs) Lutheran and r?eformed Union Church, where most of nry Schuylkill County ancestors were buried-- Yoders and llepl-ersrMaurers, Bclac).e, Reinerts, ltlagnere, Ilerings, and Steins. TIO{TGRANTS OT'1828 By Mary Helen Yoder Wade Christian Yoder is shown as YR3 in the 1859 census records of forelgn-born Yoders reporteal ln the last lssue of the Yoder Newsletter. Thelr son Chrlstian married Catherine Becker and son Jonathan narrled Anna Swartz. Untll 1981+ the facts about this fanily were rather sparse. It was known that Christian and Mary (lt4arie, llaria) raised their two sons in Green Township, Wa)me County, OH. Chrlstian dled 6 Sep 1850 and was buried at the Paradise Cenetery, Oreen fownship. By the tirne Maria died, the Oak Grove MennonLte Cenetery was being used. Her grave stone reada: "Maria wife of Chrlstian Yoder-born 2J Nov 1?90 and dled 9 Apr 1882-aged !1 yeers 4 nonths and Ltl days". Fanlly tradition stated that to this unlon four chlldren were born, two of whon dled ln France, the country origln of this fanlly. This past year these facts were sent to Helene Widmer of Belfort, Prance to ask lf she could locate any information about this fanlly. Miss Widmer, with really lro clue rhere to begin, found the records in the Danjoutin Archives. ft was quite a surprise that the inforrnatlon was so near her home and that the recorda were so lnfortnativer 22 Dec 1.822 Marriager Christ Joder (25 yr.s. old) born ln Charnois--son of Chrlst Joder and Elizabeth Lehnan (reavers), and Marie Joder (33 yrs. old) born ln Belfort-daughter of Jacques Joder and Marianne Guesmann (farmers ln Belfort) Con't. Yoder of Grantsvllle MD comes some information in Gerrnan assembled by Karl Jocler and hls fellow researcher, Otmar Jotter which identifies the origln of .Ioseph loder of Bureau Co., IL (see YNI#4, Foreign Born Yoders of L850 Census, "Yf"). These data are slmopsized as followsr "Joseph Ioder, the husband of Barbara Albrecht, was born in 1805---the son of Joseph Joder and Mary-Catherln Cernann of Harmersbergerhof. Joeeph Sr. was the uncle of Christian Joder, the Anlsh minister of Horbacherhof. "0n 20 Apr. 1835, Joseph Jr. and hls wife departed with the entire Albrecht famlly for America. They arrived in New York ln July of 1836. They had friends named Burkey ln Hennepln fL. From New York they traveled up the Hudson and then by way of the Erie Canal to Chicago. From there they traveled by ox tean west and settled ln Arlspie Township, Bureau Co." Michael Yoder of Fulton Co., 0H: The data contributed by subscrlber Thonas A.
