CHard Drive Installation GuidelinesUsing the Cable-Select Feature with Ultra ATADevices✎Optional drives are available from HP in kits. The configuration ofthe drive employs a cable-select feature that identifies the drive asdevice 0 (master drive) or device 1 (slave drive).Device 1 is the drive connected to the cable’s middle connector.Device 0 is the drive connected to the cable’s end connector (appliesonly to 80-conductor ATA cables). See “Guidelines for InstallingUltra ATA Devices” in this appendix for an example of an UltraATA cable.HP hard drives ship with jumpers preset to cable-select mode;therefore, no jumper setting changes on the existing or optional drivesare required. If you purchase a third-party hard drive, refer to thedocumentation included with the kit to ensure proper installation andconfiguration of cables. If installing a second device on the primary controller, you must usean 80-conductor Ultra ATA cable for optimal performance. This cableis standard on some models.Guidelines for Installing Ultra ATA DevicesWhen installing additional Ultra ATA drives, follow these guidelines:■ If using multiple Ultra ATA devices, HP recommends that thedevices be split between the primary and secondary Ultra ATAchannels for optimum performance. Use an additional Ultra ATAcable to connect the additional device to the system board.Hardware Reference Guide www.hp.com C-1
