Chapter 1IntroductionTHIS MANUAL PROVIDES TECHNICAL PERSONNEL withthe detail necessary to install and understand the Medicare SeverityDiagnosis Related Groups (MS-DRG) Software (the grouper) so theycan install, interface with, and support it.The MS-DRG software may be implemented either as a set of subroutinesto be called from a program written in Assembler or a higherlevel language (e.g., COBOL) or as a utility program with all parameterspassed through a job’s SYSIN input stream.Volume serial numbers on the sample JCL should be replaced withthe volume serial number of the transfer tape received by your facility.This number is clearly indicated on the outside of the tape youreceived.For example purposes, the required datasets are copied to disk andcataloged under the Userid, GROUPER.Grouper tablesMinimally, the grouper consists of three programs. One of the programsconsists of tables which contain information for all validdiagnoses, procedures, and DRGs. The diagnosis and proceduretables were prepared from the CPHA ICD-9-CM codes and abbreviateddescription tape (December 1979 revision) and the additionalcodes documented in the Federal Registers detailing final grouperchanges for versions 4.0 through 28.0.
