17Goal Seven - Increase services to profession and community.People outside universities probably believe that faculty spendalmost all of their time teaching and doing their research. Those“line duties” do usually take up the majority of our time, but wealso spend time in “staff or service roles.” This is especially trueat state schools such as Old Dominion University where quite a lotof the governance and many service activities, including studentcareer advising, student mentoring, and management of studentorganizations require faculty time. As an example, Professor PaulChampagne is serving his third term as Chair of the Faculty Senateat Old Dominion University. As he noted this morning, he seemsto be called to this duty every time ODU gets a new President!In addition to the significant levels of service given by faculty touniversity, college, and departmental committee work, our facultyalso are quite active in their professional organizations and in thelocal community. Let me describe a few of these activities.Last year we emphasized the editorial duties of our faculty. Wehave quite a number of editors, associate editors, and editorialboard members. Editorships and the reviews of scholarship areone way we serve our professional community. There are otherprofessional organization roles our faculty occupy as well.Professor John Ford SHOW SLIDE OF JOHN has long beenactive in the Academy of Marketing Science and this year willserve as President. John has been active in this organization formany, many years, as track chair for conferences, organizing theirdoctoral consortium, and so on. The Academy of MarketingScience (AMS), founded in 1971, is an international organizationconcerned with creating and disseminating marketing knowledge.The organization publishes the Journal of the Academy of
