Small ideas make it big in Germany. Without nanotechnology our
lives would be unimaginable. Nearly all branches of industry profit
from the progress being made in nano research. At the same time,
nanotechnology still has a wealth of innovative potential to exploit.
Germany has set itself the goal of becoming a pacemaker, decisively
shaping the future of nanotechnology – even today, German
researchers are right up front in third place in the international
league table for patent applications.
In 2010, the nanotechnology location Germany is showcasing itself
internationally in the context of the “Welcome to Nanotech
The ASMEC Advanced Surface Mechanics GmbH was established in 2003 by Dr. Thomas
Chudoba, who is a recognized expert in the field of surface mechanics and nanoindentation since
many years. ASMEC provides hardware, software and services for the characterization and
analysis of mechanical surface properties in the micro and nano range.
The Universal Nanomechanical Tester (UNAT) is a novel instrument for the measurement of
mechanical surface properties in the micro and nano range with maximum forces up to 2N. The
unique feature of the instrument is the realization of two completely independent measuring
heads for the measurement of normal and lateral load-displacement curves with equal nanometre
resolution. Due to the combination of both measuring heads, the UNAT can be used as micro-
hardness, wear, scratch, tensile and fatigue tester, as well as profilometer. The simple
replacement of the conventional diamond tips by indenters of any solid material allows the
investigation of the original material contact in a tribological application with so far unrivalled
accuracy. Another product is the nanoindentation head which can be installed in a Scanning
Electron Microscope (SEM).
With a new type of nanoindenter UNAT-M consisting of a stand alone instrument with a mobile
measuring head, ASMEC has realized a concept for the mechanical characterization of surfaces
and thin coatings in such a way that size, weight, functionality and costs are optimized for the
customer. The unique option of this device is its possibility to perform measurements directly on
the industrial sample with no need to cut off a small piece of it.
Beside hardware, ASMEC develops and offers several software products. Elastica presents the
newest developments of contact mechanics in an easy, user friendly and very fast form. The
purpose of this software is a fast analysis and optimization of coated systems in respect to their
mechanical strength during surface contact. Indent Analyser is a software for the analysis of
indentation data and the only instrument independent software on the market. In an extensive
comparison program together with the Federal Institute of Materials Research and Testing
(BAM) it was shown that hardness and modulus results obtained with this software agree better
with reference values than that from other software.
ASMEC keeps close contact to leading scientists and institutes in the field of contact mechanics
and materials research. It is a partner in several national and international research projects
together with different Fraunhofer Institutes or companies like Bosch, BMW or EADS.
The Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden e. V. (IPF) is one of the largest polymer
research facilities in Germany. As an institute of the Leibniz Association, the IPF is committed
to carrying out application-oriented basic research and receives its base funding in equal parts
from the federal and state governments.
The focus of activities at the IPF are directed toward the advancement of basic scientific
knowledge for the development of functional polymer materials and polymer materials with new
or improved characteristics. In addition, emphasis is also put on combining material
development with innovative and sustainable production and processing technologies. Advanced
materials are necessary and create a driving force for the development of new technologies and
system solutions in medical engineering, modern communication technology, data storage and
processing, and transport and energy technology. In their endeavours, the researchers at the IPF
work towards understanding the effects of interfaces and the utilization of interface design in
material development, in which nanotechnological aspects as well as interfaces to biosystems are
of great importance.
Promising ways to novel materials are opened by development of nanostructured materials and
surfaces. E.g. nanocomposites with carbon nanotubes and/or layered silicates have been
developped for automotive applications. Also, antistatic or electrically conducting behaviour can
be achieved using novel nanofillers. Nanostructured surfaces allow, e.g. development of
miniaturized components and sensors for micro- and nanoelectronics.
The combination of competences in natural and engineering sciences, for which the IPF is
known, as well as state-of-the-art technical equipment, allow a holistic approach to material
science research. This extends from synthesis and modification of polymer materials to
characterization, theoretical penetration, processing, and testing to controlling characteristics of
polymer materials, biomaterials, and composites by selective interface design. In this way, it is
possible to deal with problems and requirements on new and improved polymer materials until
they are transformed into an industrially utilized product.

Particle size is the parameter that determines behavior and bio-distribution of nanoparticles in
physiological conditions after penetration through the epithelial barriers. Thus, the use of
classified particles is a prerequisite for drug delivery to a specific target. A novel technology
using microjet reactor based on solvent/non-solvent precipitation using a MicroJet reactor is
developed by MJR PharmJet (patent pending) which takes the advantages of solvent/non-solvent
precipitation and at the same time ascertains the desired particle size and narrow size
distribution. Production of nanoparticles results for the use of this technology in nanoparticles of
desired size (20-1000 nm) and characteristics as well as with high drug loading efficiencies. This
novel technology which is capable of production volumes up to 100 mL/min also enables a very
efficient production process and is easy to scale up
The use of the Microjet reactor technology for the development and production of Nano- and
Microparticles for Life Sciences is focused on the improvement of the efficacy of API's,
improved formulations and the design and the production of new, superior drug delivery systems.
Our product portfolio includes general services, development services, commercialization of
own formulation strategies and products as well as custom made Microjet reactor production
plants. Recently the production of nanoparticles is hard to handle with the current methods and
only weakly controllable in an technical environment. With our proprietory production method
of nano- and microparticles we are able to control all technical and physicochemical parameters
very easily. Our company is borne by unique selling points as the co-precipitation of API's and
pharmaceutical exipients in one single nano- or microparticle and a statistical design of
experiments to enable custom made and efficient development and production of highly
specialised particles.
Our recent projects are focused on the following product strategies:
• formulations for the oral application of peptides and proteins
• ph-sensitive positively charged nanoparticles
• stomach resistent multilayered nanoparticles
• combination nano-therapy of cancer
• nanoparticles in medicated gums
• nano- and microencapsulation of food additives
Up to date we could realise a broad product pipeline out of these development projects
Research and Development for technical and biological surfaces
The NanoCraft was founded in 2001 as a Spin Off from Max-Planck-Institute of Colloids and
Interfaces (MPI-KGF) by Dr. Sabri Akari. We perform research and development projects in the
region of Nano-, Bio- and Surface Technologies. In 2008 we developed the Smart Coating
Technology based on conductive polymers for the electronic industry and optimized the large
scale production of the Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein.
Smart Coatings for the electronic industry
The Smart Coating Technology for Pogo Pins, Probe Cards and PCBs is a novel protection
solution based on conductive polymers. A diamond like thin conducting polymer film is attached
to the metall surface iorder to reduce the surface energy and increase the surface hardness. The
Nano layer works anti adhesive and can increases the life time clearly. Consequently,
environmental contaminations will be clearly reduced, the fact which results in homogeneous
and even lower electrical resistance. This method is leading in reducing costs and longer time
lifes of pins in the mass productioon
We offer this novel Nano Coatings through our cooperation partner IP works Technology Corp.
in Taiwan. The coatings will be apllied under high quality and clean room standards.
Advantages of the Smart Coating Technology on Pogo Pins, Probe Cards and PCBs:
• Reduces environmental contaminations
• Resulting in homogeneous low electrical resistance
• Increases the surface hardness
• protect against oxidation and tarnishing
• works anti adhesive and increases life time
Awards of the NanoCraft:
• Innovation Award Baden-Württemberg, Germany, 2003
• International Technology Award euregio.bodensee, 2004

years, little is known about their integration into functional systems. The overarching vision of
NIM is therefore to design, fabricate and achieve control of multi-functional nanosystems, and to
unlock their potential for applications in fields as diverse as future information technologies, the
life sciences, or combinations of both.
Research areas dominated by quantum effects including single-electron and single-spin behavior,
nano photonics, and the development of strategies for quantum computation are complemented
by areas that address the exploration of nano sensors and actuators, single-molecule machines,
and the observation of nanoscale objects in living cells, as well as drug delivery nanosystems.
Experimental studies and technological developments are supplemented by theoretical
investigations of complex nanosystems in order to create a broad and deep knowledge base, and
to establish an exciting research environment that links traditionally separate disciplines.
A major structural goal of the NIM-cluster is to firmly establish itself as the most attractive
nanoscience research site in Germany. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring early
independence of outstanding junior scientists, offering them internationally competitive start-up
packages and tenure-track professorships that will give them a long-term career perspective and
allow for continuity of research. Equal Opportunity funds are available to aid specifically female
researchers in achieving their individual work-life balance. NIM also supports young researchers
in founding spin-off companies.
Silanotex is manufacturing Nano-Silver master batch. By using Silanotex master batch you
can equip your products with antibacterial properties. Our master batch is used for any kind of
thermoplastic material or even blended materials, in special our master batch is used for fibers.
Our unique and by patent law protected technique enables us to bring the nano silver colloids
into the fibers instead of application of ions onto fabrics. The antibacterial effect does not only
protect humans but also the fabric, since it also works against fungi, algae and yeast. Through the
silver, you find - besides the reduction of germs - also a protection of the surface of the fabric,
since bacteria, algae, fungi and yeast are mainly involved in aging and corrosion of material. For
that you find the following advantages through Silanotex:
• The antibacterial effect lasts as long as the fiber is used; new colloids are always supplied
from inside the fiber
• The antibacterial effect is washing-resistant, since the silver colloids are fixed in the fiber
• Economical silverdosis, since it is not necessary to compensate loss of silver through
washings
• No pollution, no washed-out or exhausted chemical treatments for fixing silver on the
surface of the yarn or fabric
• No staining of ready fabric; since our silver is already provided as colloids and not as
Ions the raw fibers have already a slight beige colour.
• Applicable for all synthetic fibers (PET, PES, PA, PP, etc.) even microfibers and
siliconized fibers, because we don’t use any kind of carrier system.
• The quality of the fibers is fully preserved; the processing of the fibers is done as before.
• Easy, well known technology for the fiber producer, like spin dying
• Clean production, no silver will emerge into the environment during production or later.
• Antibacterial Effect proofed and certificated in Germany
• Dermatological proofed and certified in Germany
• Silanotex-silver is listed at Oeko-tex standard 100 as accepted auxiliary for biological
active finish for textiles (No poison matter inside the fibers like triclosan)
• Perfect silver dispersion and nano scaled colloids traceable through TEM-shots (Electronmicroscope
analysis)
“Study the future!” - it's possible at the Technische Fachhochschule (TFH) Berlin, the location in
central Berlin for practice-oriented teaching and applied research. There are more than 70
Bachelor and Masters courses at the University of Applied Sciences. Courses range from the
classical engineering disciplines Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, to Information
Technology, Pharmaceutical and Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Medical Technology,
Food Science and Technology, Geoinformation, and much more.
The nanotechnology is applied in many different scientific fields. The University of Applied
Sciences (TFH) Berlin, Department of Pharmaceutical Technology focuses on characterizations
of pharmaceutical systems. Different drug delivery systems e.g. liposomes, lipid emulsions and
nanoparticles were studied and their structures up to nanoscale demonstrated. The techniques e.g.
small and wide angle x-ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS) and grazing incidence x-ray scattering
(GISAXS) from the synchrotron source are suitable for this purpose because this source can
produce a highly intense and focus x-ray. The structure of drug delivery systems with only small
amount of samples can be determined. Very comprehensive information is the result. The further
useful technique to determine the nanostructure is the small angle neutron scattering (SANS).
Because of the opportunity to vary the contrast, different regions of the sample can be observed.
A successful measurement by SANS with nanoparticles containing titanium dioxide are shown.
However, these modern techniques can be performed only at the large scale facilities
(synchrotron or neutron sources) e.g. Berlin Synchrotron Source (BESSY), Berlin/Germany,
German Synchrotron Source (DESY), Hamburg/Germany, Hahn-Meitner-Institute (BENSC)
Berlin/Germany, Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II), Munich/Germany. The experiments can be
carried out at these institutes on basis of a particular permission applied for together with a
respective proposal. These techniques are until now mostly used in the field of physic, biology
and chemistry. The present research work shows, however, that they are also useful as
complementary techniques for pharmaceutical systems.
