To address this issue, <strong>Baxter</strong> will focus more resources on improving math andscience education.<strong>Baxter</strong> has traditionally supported education worldwide through programs such as The<strong>Baxter</strong> International Foundation’s employee Matching Gift and Dollars for Doers programs,and through volunteer efforts by facilities and employees. In <strong>2007</strong>, <strong>Baxter</strong> employeesdevoted nearly 18,000 volunteer hours in support of education worldwide. Activities includedparticipating in classroom projects, fundraising, serving on college and university boards,and financial contributions to educational institutions. The company also participated in theIllinois Biotechnology Industry Organization’s Teacher Training Program to help integratebiotechnology lessons into secondary school classrooms.Building on this foundation, <strong>Baxter</strong> is developing a broader program focused on biotechnologyeducation for low-income high school students in Chicago public schools and beyond.Through a variety of mechanisms, the program will attempt to bring biotechnology to life forstudents, enabling them to embrace science and pursue careers in biotechnology-related fields.34BAXTER <strong>2007</strong> sustainability report | community support
