Anxiety attacks usuallyoccur suddenly and without warning.Sometimes there’s an obvioustrigger— getting stuck in an elevator,for example, but in other cases, theattacks come out of the blue.Anxiety attacks usually peak withinten minutes, and they rarely last morethan thirty minutes. But during thatshort time, the terror can be so severethat you feel as if you’re about to dieor totally lose control. The physicalsymptoms of anxiety attacks arethemselves so frightening that manypeople believe they’re having a heartattack. After an anxiety attack is over,you may be worried about havinganother one, particularly in a publicplace where help isn’t available or youcan’t easily escape.Again some of the more commonsymptoms of anxiety attacks include:a surge of overwhelming panic, feelingof losing control or going crazy,heart palpitations or chest pain,feeling like you’re going to pass out,hyperventilation, hot flushes or chillsand feeling detached or unreal.Finally there are six major typesof anxiety disorders, generalizedanxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsivedisorder, panic disorder (anxietyattacks), phobia, post-traumatic stressdisorder, and social anxiety disorder.In the next edition we will look at howto tackle anxiety with the use of someadvice on relaxation techniques.
