FROM THE EDITOR編 者 的 話IC bids farewell toDr Chris WongAfter completing 18 years of distinguished service atthe Industrial Centre of The Hong Kong PolytechnicUniversity, Dr Chris HC Wong retired as Director ofIndustrial Centre on 5 December 2009.Dr Wong worked in the Department of ElectricalEngineering and Industrial Centre respectively in hisearly years. He took the helm of the Industrial Centresince 1991 and retired in 2009 after completing 18years of service. On behalf of the Industrial Centre, theIC Newsletter would like to express its sincere gratitudeto Dr Wong for his contributions to the IndustrialCentre. The IC will continue helping the Universityto nurture and produce preferred graduates for thecommunity as well as contributing to the developmentand advancement of engineering education in HongKong and China. The University has been searchingfor the appropriate candidate and will announce thenew appointment once confirmed. ÌÌRapid Demountable Platform honoured in UKÌÌ 快 速 安 裝 平 台 再 度 揚 威 海 外ic hot newsThe Rapid Demountable Platform(RDP) jointly developed by theDepartment of Building & RealEstate (BRE), Industrial Centre andConstruction Industry Institute HongKong (CIIHK) was recently honouredby the Chartered Institute of Building(CIOB)’s International Innovation &Research Awards 2008/09. ProfessorAlbert Chan of the Department of BREreceived the award on behalf of the teamat the award presentation ceremony heldon 14 May 2009 at UK. The judging panelpraised the research on RDP “providesthe solution to the safety problemsassociated with maintenance workin Hong Kong in providing temporaryplatforms”. The RDP has alreadyreceived a Gold Medal with Jury’sCongratulations and Special Prize in theInternational Exhibition of Inventions,New Techniques and Products held in2008 in Geneva, Switzerland.The RDP provides an alternative systemwhich is safer than the traditionalbamboo truss-out scaffold when carryingout repair and maintenance works onhigh-rise buildings. Unlike bambootruss-out scaffold which relies on properinstallation of a few anchor bolts fixed tothe external walls, the RDP is a robustand solidly built device with steel frames,aluminium alloy panels, and stainlesssteel railings. To maximize conveniencefor workers, RDP can be easily installedand dismantled and can be done within15 minutes each. It can be attached tothe window side of a residential flat andhung over the external wall for workersto carry out their duties safely at height.This modular-based platform can flexiblysuit workers’ need in carrying out variousminor maintenance works, includingexternal wall inspection, changingair-conditioning unit, maintenance ofplumbing/drainage system, painting,etc.The CIOB is a UK-based leadingprofessional institute representingover 42,000 members in the buildingand construction industries over theworld. Every year, the InternationalInnovation and Research Awards willbe presented to winners in recognitionof their excellence in innovation andresearch that drives the development ofthe industry. Tong,President of The Hong Kong PolytechnicUniversity (PolyU), and Mr Peter Sun,Chairman of EuAuto Technology Limited(EuAuto) as the officiating guests.myCar is a joint collaboration of PolyUand EuAuto with its body designed byinternationally renowned Italian cardesigner Giorgetto Giugiaro. mycarhas obtained the World ManufacturerIdentification (WMI) Code earlier thisyear (2009) and it went on sales in manyEuropean countries. Fully compliedwith European standards, myCar isthe first home-grown vehicle to hit theinternational market.The NEV version of mycar available inthe local market has also been on salesin the European market. It can travel adistance of 110km on flat roads whenfully charged, which can be done fromany regular household socket and canreach a maximum speed of 64km/h. Itrequires six to eight hours to be fullycharged.The idea of developing myCar wasoriginated in 2003. IC together withsome departments participated inthe initial exterior & parts design andmanufacturing of the car. After yearsof development, the vehicle was finallymanufactured and launched for localroad testing in 2009. It has successfullymet the roadworthiness requirementsstipulated by the Government’sTransport Department and has recentlybeen granted the vehicle type-approvalas a private car. It is now available forsale in Hong Kong at HK$97,000, onthe condition of travelling on roadswith a speed limit at or under 50km/h.To promote the use of electric vehicles,the HKSAR Government has exemptedthe First Registration Tax. The annuallicense fee costs only HK$440.At the beginning of 2010, lithiumbattery-drivenand upgrade versions ofmycar will be launched. Around 130participants from China,Hong Kong, Taiwan, UnitedKingdom, Canada, Russia, Australia,Philippines and Ghana participated inthe Conference.The 9CMIT was held in Nanjing, China,from 27 to 30 October 2009. The themeof the 9CMIT is “Enhancing industrialtraining quality - creating niches,fostering strengths”. The programmefocuses on aspects of innovativeparadigm, pedagogy and curriculum inengineering education and industrialtraining to meet with the emergingneeds of modern industry, economyand society. Participants from differentcountries and cities actively shared theirviews, experiences and difficulties facedin modern industrial training educationat the conference. The 9CMIT alsoreceived the first-ever delegate fromGhana, Africa.Inaugurated in 1986, the InternationalConference on Modern IndustrialTraining (CMIT) is a triennial eventjointly organized by PolyU IC anda key university in Mainland Chinawith the aims of serving as a platformfor reviewing and exchanging ideasand experience in modern industrialtraining, and to promote the importanceof intellectually challenging, relevantindustrial training as an integral part ofhigher education. The first CMIT washeld in Guangzhou, then successivelyin Nanjing, Wuhan, Xi’an, Jinan, Beijing,Chongqing & Hong Kong. The nextCMIT (10CMIT) is scheduled in 2012and will be held in Dalian.香 港 理 工 大 學 工 業 中 心 及 東由 南 大 學 聯 合 舉 辦 的 第 九 屆 現代 工 業 培 訓 國 際 學 術 會 議 (9CMIT)完 滿 結 束 。 來 自 中 國 、 香港 、 台 灣 、 英 國 、 加 拿大 、 俄 羅 斯 、 澳 洲 、 菲 律賓 以 及 加 納 等 國 家 及 地 區超 過 130 位 工 程 教 育 界 代 表參 加 了 會 議 。第 九 屆 CMIT 於 2009 年 10月 27 至 30 日 在 中 國 南 京舉 行 。 會 議 主 題 為 《 厚 內涵 創 特 色 ‧ 提 高 工 業 培 訓質 量 》, 重 點 探 討 如 何 拓寬 、 充 實 和 創 新 現 代 工 業 培 訓 的 內涵 , 如 何 結 合 學 科 發 展 和 利 用 科 技成 果 來 創 建 工 業 培 訓 特 色 , 以 滿 足各 層 次 人 才 培 養 的 需 求 。 來 自 各 國及 地 區 的 與 會 者 積 極 發 言 , 與 各 代表 分 享 工 業 培 訓 教 育 的 挑 戰 及 心得 。 是 次 會 議 更 是 自 第 一 屆 舉 辦 以來 首 次 有 來 自 非 洲 加 納 的 代 表 參加 。三 年 一 度 的 CMIT, 自 1986 年 創 辦 以來 , 均 由 一 所 內 地 的 高 等 院 校 聯 同香 港 理 工 大 學 工 業 中 心 聯 合 舉 辦 ,目 的 是 作 為 一 個 學 術 交 流 平 台 , 回顧 及 分 享 培 訓 的 心 得 , 從 而 提 倡 具挑 戰 性 及 前 瞻 性 的 工 業 培 訓 作 為 高等 工 程 教 育 重 要 的 一 環 。 首 屆 會 議在 廣 州 召 開 , 往 後 歷 屆 分 別 於 南京 、 武 漢 、 西 安 、 濟 南 、 北 京 、 重慶 和 香 港 召 開 。 下 屆 會 議 (10CMIT) 將於 2012 年 於 大 連 舉 行 。工 業 中 心 簡 訊 7

In addition to the HK$550,000received from the charity sale ofthe Antarctic photos at the IC 30 thAnniversary Celebration Banquet, DrChris Wong, former Director of IC alsoannounced that he would personallydonate an extra HK$1 million in supportof the establishment of Dr YK ChingMemorial Scholarship, subsequentlyincreasing the seed money of theScholarship to HK$1.9 million. Thisbenefaction will support the provisionof scholarships and bursaries to PolyUengineering students.The inaugural ceremony of thescholarship was held in June 2009,with the presence of Professor TimothyTong, PolyU President, Dr TL Ng,Deputy Chairman of PolyU Council, MrMartin Ching, son of the late Dr Chingand Dr Chris Wong, former Director ofIC. Two groupsof students who have undertaken andcompleted manufacturing projectssupervised by the IC were selectedto receive the scholarship for 2009.The presentation of Bosch RexrothScholarship was held on 9 September2009 with the presence of Mr Sunny Lee,General Business Unit Sales Manager,Bosch Rexroth China and Ir Louis Chu,Associate Director, Industrial Centre.A total of 12 PolyU students from theDepartment of Mechanical Engineeringparticipated in two manufacturingprojects namely ‘Process ControlTraining System’ and ‘Automatic RunnerSeparating System’ in 2009. Their ICsupervisors praised that the studentswere highly devoted to the project andhave demonstrated professional attitudethroughout the project. The students, onthe other hand, also highly cherishedthe opportunity to work with a real clientand advanced technologies provided byBosch Rexroth. ic & educationWhat a yummy project!這 個 項 目 真 美 味 !This is perhaps one of the most ‘tasty’ student projects we have ever implemented!這 可 能 是 工 業 中 心 有 史 以 來 最 「 美 味 」 的 學 生 項 目 之 一 !Garden Company Limited is arenowned local food productioncompany continuously strivingfor efficiency enhancement, innovationand quality. In 2008, Garden invitedIC trainees to design and make a‘Tray Stacking Machine’ for their breadproduction line. A total of 14 studentsfrom PolyU Department of MechanicalEngineering and Department ofIndustrial & Systems Engineeringwere selected to participate in thisinteresting and challenging project. Thisis a relatively large scale project with areal client (Garden) and students wererequired to use their innovation to designand fabricate one tray transportationconveyor, one metal dolly transportationsystem and one automatic tray stackingmechanism.Similar to other students who are freshto manufacturing real-life project, thisstudent team also encountered manyproblems in different aspects suchas system design, assembly, timemanagement, team work, etc. Underthe guidance of their supervisors, theyworked hard to integrate their knowledge,theories and skills into the projectsystem design, automation, mechanicaland manufacturing engineering. Theproject was initially completed by thestudents, although for real-life operatonthe Tray Stacking Machine has a lot toimprove. The Machine was deliveredto Garden in 2009 after improvementsundertaken by the students and theirsupervisors. ic & educationIC joins hands with HKUST to developNEW TRAININGIn line with the new and upcoming university curriculum and needsof the society, the IC worked together with the Department ofMechanical Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science andTechnology (HKUST) to develop new subjects and training activitiesfor its students undertaking IC training in 2008/09academic year. Unlike the traditional technology orworkshop-based modular training, the new subjectsadopted a project-based approach. Each subjectfocuses on one of the most prevailing disciplines/applications and a total of three subjects wereoffered, each covering one of the following disciplines/applications: intelligent automation, energy efficientbuilding and transportation device. The subject aimsat giving the students a holistic understanding on thedesign, technology, manufacturing and applicationof the specific discipline. The competition is a goodopportunity to demonstrate students’understanding on the subject as well astheir abilities and skills to realize theirdesigns. Students can also learn andappreciate the design and work of otherstudent teams.The new subjects were first introducedand delivered to HKUST students duringthe winter break of 2008/09. Feedbackfrom their programme leader, professorsand students were encouraging.Suggestions were also made to improvethe subject content and delivery.Some of the suggestions were quicklyimplemented in the following summerterm. ic & educationSummer placements for civil students土 木 工 程 及 建 築 專 業 暑 期 實 習 計 劃In the summer of 2009, with greatsupport from our industrial partnersin the construction industry, around60 first year higher diploma students ofthe Department of Civil and StructuralEngineering of PolyU joined WorkIntegrated Learning (WIL) placementprogramme organized by the IC toexperience real work environment inconstruction industry. Students wereassigned to work as trainees in designoffices or construction sites of thepartnering companies for three to sixweeks over the period from June toAugust 2009. IC training supervisorskept close communication with thepartnering companies and students byvisiting the students in their workplacesregularly and talking to his/her immediateindustrial supervisors to understandtheir learning progress and difficultiesencountered.We express our gratitude to ourpartnering companies which offeredwork placements to the students in thelast summer. The eleven companiesparticipated in the programme wereAble Engineering Company Limited,Excel Engineering Company Limited,Freyssinet Hong Kong Limited, HangYue Engineering Limited, Hing FuEngineering Limited, Hilti Hong KongLimited, Yau Lee Construction CompanyLimited, A-tech LF & Associates Limited,AECOM Environment Hong Kong,Leadtops Raymond Limited and PetrosConsulting Engineers Limited.The placement programme aimed atenhancing the students’ developmentof professional knowledge and genericskills through work exposure andexperience by engaging in real projectsin the construction industry. Apart fromprofessional abilities, students wereexpected to notice the importance ofgeneric skills and personal attributesanticipated by the industry. At thecompletion of the placement, traineeswould submit a training report and sharehis/her work experience with peers in apresentation. In addition, the immediatesupervisors of the partnering companieswere invited to give brief comments on theperformance of the trainees. ic & industrySafer & betterhigh rise building gas riser inspection提 昇 高 樓 大 廈 煤 氣 管 道 檢 查 的 安 全Gas is one of the major energyused by local residential andcommercial sectors. To ensurethe provision of a safe and reliable supplyof gas to its users, the Hong Kong andChina Gas Company Limited (Towngas)has recently developed a Gas RiserInspection Robotic System (GRIRS) incollaboration with the Industrial Centre.Gas risers inspection sometimes can bevery difficult. Towngas has a professionalgas risers inspection team but in carryingout their duties, they are still facing a lotof practical limitations. For example, theinspectors may not be able to accessthe flat and inspect its outdoor gas pipesto see if there are any rusty gas pipesor gas leakage. For those gas riserslocated outside the flat, inspectors canonly inspect them by using binocularsand/or putting up scaffolding. To enhancethe safety, effectiveness and efficiencyof gas riser inspection particularly ofhigh-rise building, Towngas invited theIC to develop the GRIRS. The GRIRSis a portable robotic system capableof inspecting gas risers of a 30-storeybuilding. The system continuouslymoves up and down or to a designatedfloor to capture images of the gas riser.Without direct contact with the pipes,the camera captures signs of rusts, gasdetector senses gas leakage and thesystem sounds an alarm. The imageand location data are then transmittedto computer for further analysis. Withthe use of the GRIRS, inspectors areno longer required to physically climb upany scaffolding. The inspection processand operation become more flexible,efficient and safe.The system was demonstrated andtested twice with a 32-storey buildingtogether with Towngas. The systemwas commissioned and the operatortraining was conducted. ic & industryAccredited Training Course for Minor Works Contractors屋 宇 署 認 可 小 型 工 程 承 建 商 培 訓 課 程As a measure to improve thebuilding safety in Hong Kong,the Government has amendedthe Buildings Ordinance in June 2008to introduce the Minor Works ControlSystem, facilitating members of thepublic to carry out minor works in privatebuildings lawfully through simplifiedprocedures. A register of minor workscontractors will be established under thenew system.Under the minor works control system,a total of 118 items of building workshave been included as minor works andthey are classified into three classes(Class I, II & III) according to their scale,complexity and risk to safety and will besubject to different degrees of control.Contractor companies and individualpractitioners can register as minor workscontractors of the relevant classes andtypes by virtue of their work experience,qualifications and competence. ClassI and II minor works contractors arecompanies, while Class III minor workscontractors can be companies orindividuals.To register as minor works contractorsof the three classes, individuals andcompanies are required to satisfyrequirements set by the Government.As currently not all practitioners andcompanies can meet the statutoryrequirements, accredited top-up coursesand training courses are recently offeredby institutes to help them to meet thestatutory requirements for registration.Some of the courses are fully subsidizedby the Government at the early stage.IC is nominated by the BuildingDepartment of the Hong KongGovernment as one of the accreditedtraining institutes. Since October 2009the IC has been offereing the RegisteredMinor Works Contractors (Individual)Class III Minor Works Training Course(6 hours).
