<strong>Fram<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Differences</strong> 5content of female athletes to coverage of women’s sports through more traditionalmediums.PurposeAlthough exploratory <strong>in</strong> nature, this research compares gender descriptors used <strong>in</strong>newspaper sports sections to those <strong>in</strong> onl<strong>in</strong>e sport journalism sites. Specifically, this studyattempts to determ<strong>in</strong>e if any significant differences are present <strong>in</strong> how more traditionalmedia (newspapers) and newer media (Internet) outlets cover the same men’s andwomen’s sport at the same level of competition, <strong>in</strong> this case the U.S. Open men’s andwomen’s tennis tournaments. Moreover, these results can serve as an <strong>in</strong>troductory gaugeto see if the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g popularity of the Internet as a sport news source poses a threat totraditional notions of mascul<strong>in</strong>ity often re<strong>in</strong>forced by ma<strong>in</strong>stream media.Research QuestionsResearch questions were employed rather than hypotheses for this exploratorystudy. Three overrid<strong>in</strong>g research questions guided this study:1.
