<strong>Fram<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Differences</strong> 7The three newspapers selected, USA Today, The New York Times, and The LosAngeles Times rank first, third, and fourth among U.S. newspapers <strong>in</strong> average weekdaycirculation (Editor & Publisher Yearbook, 2008). The second most-circulated newspaper<strong>in</strong> the U.S., the Wall Street Journal, is a bus<strong>in</strong>ess-focus publication that does not offerregular and thorough sports coverage to the extent of the other three, and thus was not<strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this study. Onl<strong>in</strong>e sport news sites produced by ESPN, Fox <strong>Sport</strong>s, and <strong>Sport</strong>sIllustrated ranked first, second, and fifth among the most popular multi-sport Internetsites <strong>in</strong> the U.S. (ComScore Network, 2005). The third and fourth rank<strong>in</strong>g sites for uniquevisitors, Yahoo <strong>Sport</strong>s and AOL <strong>Sport</strong>s, were not <strong>in</strong>cluded, because neither assignswriters to attend and cover sport<strong>in</strong>g events to the extent of SI.com or the other two sites.Units of AnalysisA graduate student regularly checked and located all byl<strong>in</strong>e (name of author(s)<strong>in</strong>cluded) articles focus<strong>in</strong>g on the U.S. Open tennis tournaments published <strong>in</strong> the sixoutlets over a 16-day period that <strong>in</strong>cluded all 14 days of tournament play, as well as thes<strong>in</strong>gle days prior to and after the tournaments.Articles not attributed to an <strong>in</strong>dividual author(s) were omitted. Without hav<strong>in</strong>gspatial limitations, Internet sites, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the three <strong>in</strong> this study, often publish hundredsof non-attributed stories, such as those from press releases and wire services like theAssociated Press. Only the text of articles was coded. Headl<strong>in</strong>es were <strong>in</strong>cluded, butphotos, charts, photo captions, and reader comments (after Internet articles) were not.The Internet sites were thoroughly checked twice daily for new articles, s<strong>in</strong>cearticles would often be removed from pages for new ones.
