<strong>Fram<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>Differences</strong> 9have descriptors on their athletic prowess, positive skill level/accomplishments, andpsychological/emotional strength than articles on women’s sport (e.g., Bill<strong>in</strong>gs, Halone,& Denham, 2002; V<strong>in</strong>cent, 2004).ResultsThe six outlets exam<strong>in</strong>ed comb<strong>in</strong>ed to publish 192 articles on the U.S. Opentennis tournaments. Of those, 136 (70.8%) were published <strong>in</strong> the three newspapers, whichwere more likely to send its own writers to cover the tournaments than the onl<strong>in</strong>e sites.Among newspaper articles, 57 (41.9%) focused on the men’s tournament, 26 (19.1%) onthe women’s tournament, and 53 (39%) covered both tournaments. For the Internetarticles, 27 (48.2%) were on the men’s tournament, 14 (25%) on the women, and 15(27%) on both.The <strong>in</strong>tercoder reliability rate between the two coders was 83.6%, with the leadauthor determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>al cod<strong>in</strong>g results from any differences between the two studentcoders. S<strong>in</strong>ce three dist<strong>in</strong>ct categories were compared, cod<strong>in</strong>g results were entered <strong>in</strong>toMicrosoft EXCEL and an ANOVA randomized block design was used to determ<strong>in</strong>e ifthere were any significant differences per category among articles focus<strong>in</strong>g on men’stennis, women’s tennis, and articles conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation on both the men’s andwomen’s tournaments (alpha = 0.05). Pairwise comparisons were used to see exactlywhich attributes significantly differed from others, and between which of the three typesof articles (only on male players, only on female players, on both genders of players)(See Tables 1-2). In addition, b<strong>in</strong>omial tests for proportions were calculated to analyzedifferences between descriptors on men’s and women’s tennis, and both genders <strong>in</strong>newspaper articles versus onl<strong>in</strong>e stories (See Tables 3-5).
