concentrated on finalizing two edited collectionsof papers (for publication by Routledge).Integrity and social responsibilityIEGL’s integrity and anti-corruption programmeseeks to improve the measurement ofcorruption, map the “integrity systems” thatcounter corruption, and investigate the meansof building ethics into organizations. Projects in<strong>2005</strong> included work in Georgia (funded by theOpen Society Foundation), East Timor (fundedby the World Bank), and Papua New Guinea(funded by the Commonwealth Secretariat), aswell as major five-year projects on Measuringand Combating Bribery (with TransparencyInternational) and Conceiving andImplementing National Integrity Systems(supported by Transparency International andthe Australian Research Council).The following capacity development andoutreach activities related to the thematic areaof Good Governance were conducted in <strong>2005</strong>.• In June, <strong>UNU</strong>-ILI held a short-term courseon Leadership Development for Senior andMid-career Professionals in Amman. Thecourse, attended by 32 participants, coveredsuch topics as leadership in contemporarysociety, good governance and ethics, decentralizationmodels, public sector reform, andbudget and donor financial aid management.• In July, 47 young men and women from 24countries took part in a two-week YouthLeadership for Global Governance residentialcourse organized by <strong>UNU</strong>-ILI. Carriedout in partnership with the King Abdullah IIFund for Development and funded by theArab Gulf Programme for <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong>Development Organizations, the courseaddressed a common problem with efforts toimprove governance: the lack of contributionsfrom young people.Women’s health in IndiaIn April, <strong>UNU</strong>, the Karl Storz Company, andGerman Technical Cooperation (GTZ) launchedWithin the Global Compact: A Public–PrivatePartnership on Women’s and Girls’ Health inIndia. <strong>UNU</strong>’s role within this trilateral partnershipis to assess the project from an internationalviewpoint and determine its impact andpotential for replication in other countries.<strong>UNU</strong> held two workshops in October, inChennai (India), where participants discussedthe reproductive health situation in India, themedical system, and women’s health policies,as well as how public–private partnerships cancontribute to the development of the healthsector and the improvement of women’s health.Capacity development and outreachBANGLADESH Dhaka — Garment workers rally for their rights.Issues such as gender roles and human rights are addressed by<strong>UNU</strong> across all issues and themes.Photo: G.
