Human and FinancialResources<strong>UNU</strong> receives no funds from the regular UNbudget; it is supported entirely by voluntarycontributions from governments, agencies,international organizations, private companies,and foundations. In <strong>2005</strong>, <strong>UNU</strong> receivedinvestment income from its Endowment Fundas well as operating and specific programmecontributions from 14 governments and some70 other sources (see annex 1). <strong>UNU</strong> alsobenefited from counterpart and other support,such as cost-sharing support for fellowshipsand other activities.System-wide, <strong>UNU</strong> expenditures in <strong>2005</strong>amounted to US$38.56 million (about half by<strong>UNU</strong> Centre and half by the <strong>UNU</strong> RTC/Ps).This included $14.10 million for academicactivities, $17.01 million for personnel, and$7.45 million in general costs.As of year-end, the <strong>UNU</strong> system had apersonnel component of 321 (including 176professional staff), 25 per cent of whom weredeveloping country nationals. Consistent with<strong>UNU</strong>’s mandated role as “an internationalcommunity of scholars,” <strong>UNU</strong> staff includednationals of more than 60 countries, while the<strong>University</strong>’s more than 1,400 cooperatingnetwork associates represented at least112 countries.The <strong>University</strong> also strives to maintaina natural gender balance; in <strong>2005</strong>, the male:female ratio of <strong>UNU</strong> personnel was 56:44.48<strong>UNU</strong> ANNUAL REPORT <strong>2005</strong>
