“Service learn<strong>in</strong>g is l<strong>in</strong>ked to engagementand citizenship,” says RUTH SCHEMM, EdD,dean <strong>of</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Health <strong>Sciences</strong>. “Studentslearn to move beyond <strong>the</strong>ir own personalagendas <strong>in</strong>to a collaborative mix <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irknowledge and skills and <strong>the</strong> communitypartner’s needs, knowledge, and skills.“The <strong>University</strong> has some excellent partnershipswith many not-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it groups,”adds Dr. Schemm. “We are <strong>in</strong> an extremelyattractive geographical location because weare <strong>in</strong> close proximity to numerous servicelearn<strong>in</strong>gopportunities. Several communityorganizations are <strong>in</strong> walk<strong>in</strong>g distance from USP.”USP students also have extended <strong>the</strong>iroutreach efforts beyond <strong>Philadelphia</strong>. Lastyear, students from a service-learn<strong>in</strong>g course<strong>in</strong> pharmaceutical market<strong>in</strong>g and managementdeveloped a comprehensive market<strong>in</strong>gplan, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g creat<strong>in</strong>g brochures and o<strong>the</strong>rforms <strong>of</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g communication, to helppromote Special Equestrians, a nonpr<strong>of</strong>itorganization <strong>in</strong> Warr<strong>in</strong>gton, Pa., that provides<strong>the</strong>rapeutic horseback rid<strong>in</strong>g to help adultsand children with disabilities achievecognitive, physical, social, emotional, andbehavioral goals.“Special Equestrians has benefited fromthis experience by receiv<strong>in</strong>g many good, <strong>in</strong>novativeideas that we will utilize to help market“IT WAS SO REWARDING TO SEE THEEXCITEMENT ON THE KIDS’ FACES.THESE WERE BOOKS THAT WERE INGREAT CONDITION THAT STUDENTSCOULD ENJOY AND LEARN FROM.”LILY LIN PharmD’08, DIRECTOR OF SCIPour program,” says Laura Soldano, executivedirector <strong>of</strong> Special Equestrians. “I believe <strong>the</strong>students experienced <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>gcommunity service.The beneficiaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irgood work will ultimately be <strong>the</strong> adults andchildren with disabilities whom we serve. Recently, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>developed <strong>the</strong> Center for CommunityConnections. Supported by a generousthree-year grant from <strong>the</strong> Christian R. andMary F. L<strong>in</strong>dback Foundation, <strong>the</strong> center isembark<strong>in</strong>g on its<strong>in</strong>augural year asUSP’s advocatefor service learn<strong>in</strong>g,civic engagement,and globalcitizenship. In <strong>the</strong>center’s fewmonths <strong>of</strong> operation,USP students have planted treesthroughout southwest <strong>Philadelphia</strong>, collectedand created school supply packages for localelementary children, taught <strong>the</strong> importance<strong>of</strong> ergonomics to senior citizens, cookedbreakfasts and d<strong>in</strong>ners at <strong>the</strong> local RonaldMcDonald House, and much more.The centeralso supports <strong>the</strong> Dean’s Sem<strong>in</strong>ar, whichchallenges students to research a publichealth issue, such as diabetes or AIDS <strong>in</strong>Africa, and develop brochures and postersdescrib<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> issue.The students will distributeor present <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation at a majorcommunity event, such as <strong>the</strong> AIDS Walk, toeducate <strong>the</strong> community on disease treatmentand prevention.“The center exists because <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>as a whole is <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> encourag<strong>in</strong>g studentsto th<strong>in</strong>k beyond <strong>the</strong>ir academics and toconsider <strong>the</strong> responsibilities <strong>the</strong>y have, as studentsand as pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, to <strong>the</strong> world,” saysELIZABETH GABLE, found<strong>in</strong>g director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>center. “Community service br<strong>in</strong>gs out more<strong>of</strong> our students’ hearts and values and helpsmake <strong>the</strong>m better citizens. I have never seensuch hard-work<strong>in</strong>g students.They have equalpassion and drive for community service as<strong>the</strong>y do for <strong>the</strong>ir academics.”Nearly every student and Greek organizationon campus devotes time to communityservice.
USP BULLETIN: COMMUNITY SERVICE PAGE 9NEARLY EVERY STUDENTAND GREEK ORGANIZATIONON CAMPUS DEVOTES TIMETO COMMUNITY SERVICE.USP students present health <strong>in</strong>formation toneighborhood residents dur<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>of</strong> many communityservice events held <strong>of</strong>f campus.Two organizations—<strong>the</strong> Student CommunityInvolvement Program (SCIP) and Alpha PhiOmega (APO)—dedicate <strong>the</strong>mselves exclusivelyto provid<strong>in</strong>g community service opportunitiesfor students.SCIP made an endur<strong>in</strong>g impact on <strong>the</strong>children <strong>of</strong> Wilson Elementary School <strong>in</strong> April2003.The members set a modest goal to collect350 books for <strong>the</strong> grade school children,but dramatically surpassed <strong>the</strong>ir expectationsand collected an impressive 2,000 books—one for each child and more than enoughextra books to fully stock <strong>the</strong> school library.“It was so reward<strong>in</strong>g to see <strong>the</strong> excitementon <strong>the</strong> kids’ faces,” says LILY LINPharmD’08, director <strong>of</strong> SCIP. “These werebooks that were <strong>in</strong> great condition that studentscould enjoy and learn from. Activitieslike this are special because you are able todo someth<strong>in</strong>g that makes people happy.”In <strong>the</strong> near future, proactive students likeL<strong>in</strong> will be able to learn about a variety <strong>of</strong>community service activities <strong>in</strong> and around<strong>Philadelphia</strong>—virtually.The Center forCommunity Connections is develop<strong>in</strong>g aon-l<strong>in</strong>e database that students can accessto select <strong>in</strong>itiatives that <strong>in</strong>terest and empower<strong>the</strong>m to contribute to society.“I enjoy when groups <strong>of</strong> students dedicate<strong>the</strong>mselves to a certa<strong>in</strong> cause,” says Gable.“Kappa Epsilon had a bake sale and donatedproceeds to breast cancer awareness. AlphaDelta Chi had a hot dog–eat<strong>in</strong>g contest thatraised money for <strong>the</strong> Pennsylvania SPCA.
