HEADER ALUMNI FOCUSBETTY JEAN HARRIS, P’75, PharmDWhile a student at <strong>Philadelphia</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy and Science <strong>in</strong>1971, Dr. Betty Jean Harris attended her first American PharmaceuticalAssociation (APhA), now <strong>the</strong> American Pharmacists Association,meet<strong>in</strong>g.The opportunity to rub elbows with regional and nationalleaders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pharmacy pr<strong>of</strong>ession made a last<strong>in</strong>g impression.Little did she know that <strong>the</strong> APhA would become her outlet for apr<strong>of</strong>essional legacy. Dr. Harris established a well-respected career thathas focused on provid<strong>in</strong>g quality service, expertise, and leadership forAPhA and <strong>the</strong> pharmacy pr<strong>of</strong>ession. She was elected as <strong>the</strong> 1998–99Speaker <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> APhA House <strong>of</strong> Delegates and served as an APhABoard <strong>of</strong> Trustees member. She also has served on APhA’s policy andreference committees. She is a past president and past speaker <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Florida Pharmacy Association (FPA), past speaker <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> FPA House<strong>of</strong> Delegates, and past president <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Florida Pharmacy Foundation.In 2001, she was selected as a council member to <strong>the</strong> AmericanCouncil on Pharmaceutical Education (now <strong>the</strong> Accreditation Councilfor Pharmacy Education), <strong>the</strong> accredit<strong>in</strong>g body for pharmacy schoolsand providers <strong>of</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g education.Before Dr. Harris began her current career as a consult<strong>in</strong>g pharmacist,she worked 14 years at PharMerica, a long-term care and <strong>in</strong>stitutionalpharmacy provider <strong>in</strong> Pompano Beach, Fla. She served a variety<strong>of</strong> roles, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g as staff pharmacist, consult<strong>in</strong>g pharmacist, regionaldirector <strong>of</strong> consult<strong>in</strong>g, lead consultant, and general manager. Herresponsibilities <strong>in</strong>cluded review<strong>in</strong>g and provid<strong>in</strong>g medications andoversee<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> operation <strong>of</strong> services for more than 4,500 residents.Previously, she was a pharmacy manager for 11 years at Eckerd’s Drug.Dr. Harris’ reputation for be<strong>in</strong>g a car<strong>in</strong>g and knowledgeable consult<strong>in</strong>gpharmacist has garnered her numerous awards. In 2002, <strong>the</strong><strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Florida presented her with itsDist<strong>in</strong>guished Pharmacy Service Award. Shewas honored by <strong>the</strong> FPA <strong>in</strong> 2000 with its highesthonor, <strong>the</strong> James H. Beal Florida Pharmacist<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year Award.This honor was bestowedupon her by her fellow pharmacists statewide<strong>in</strong> recognition <strong>of</strong> her “outstand<strong>in</strong>g service topharmacy.” She received a dist<strong>in</strong>guished alumnusaward <strong>in</strong> 1998 from Nova Sou<strong>the</strong>astern<strong>University</strong>, where she received a doctor <strong>of</strong> pharmacy degree. Merckand Lambda Kappa Sigma named her a 1998 recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irVanguard Leadership Award, which is presented to a pharmacist who“has made exemplary contributions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir areas <strong>of</strong> practices, <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalassociations and/or regulatory bodies, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir communities.”Dr. Harris currently resides <strong>in</strong> Lighthouse Po<strong>in</strong>t, Fla.HERBERT S. CARLIN, MS’59, DSC’84If you asked Dr. Herbert S. Carl<strong>in</strong> to list all his awards and honors overhis long and dist<strong>in</strong>guished career, it would take him awhile to recall all <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>m. A nationally recognized leader <strong>in</strong> pharmacy, Dr. Carl<strong>in</strong> has beenlauded by many organizations for his efforts <strong>in</strong> establish<strong>in</strong>g a cutt<strong>in</strong>gedgepharmacy practice and mentor<strong>in</strong>g pharmacy students and residents.In December 2004, he was named an honorarymember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Society <strong>of</strong>Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) for his outstand<strong>in</strong>gcontributions to pharmacy practice <strong>in</strong>health systems. Among his most notable awardsare <strong>the</strong> American Pharmaceutical Association’s(APhA), now <strong>the</strong> American PharmacistsAssociation, Hugo Schaefer Award and <strong>the</strong>ASHP’s Harvey A.K.Whitney Lecture Award,which is health-system pharmacy’s highest honor. He received anhonorary doctor <strong>of</strong> science from <strong>Philadelphia</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Pharmacy andScience <strong>in</strong> 1984 and received an honorary membership <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UnitedStates Pharmacopeia <strong>in</strong> 2000.Dr. Carl<strong>in</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> top hospital pharmacists who supported<strong>the</strong> APhA’s drug product selection policy. He has championed severalmajor movements with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> multisourcepharmaceuticals <strong>in</strong> hospitals based on <strong>the</strong> formulary system. His tirelessleadership <strong>in</strong> pharmacy pr<strong>of</strong>essional associations has been remarkable.He is one <strong>of</strong> only a few <strong>in</strong>dividuals who have served as president <strong>of</strong>both <strong>the</strong> ASHP and APhA.Currently, Dr. Carl<strong>in</strong> is <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong> Pharmaceutical ManagementInsight. He previously served 13 years as vice president for pr<strong>of</strong>essionalrelations <strong>of</strong> Sche<strong>in</strong> Pharmaceutical, Inc., which was acquired <strong>in</strong> 2000 byWatson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Before jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Sche<strong>in</strong>, he was <strong>the</strong> associatedirector and apo<strong>the</strong>cary-<strong>in</strong>-chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> New YorkHospital and previously led pharmacy services at <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ill<strong>in</strong>oisHospital and <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Colorado Medical Center.Dur<strong>in</strong>g his career, he has practiced community pharmacy and hasbeen a pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> pharmacy and pharmacy adm<strong>in</strong>istration at severalcolleges, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g PCPS, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ill<strong>in</strong>ois, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>Rhode Island.
