USP BULLETIN: BULLETIN BOARD PAGE 17WORLD-RENOWNEDANATOMY ARTIST’S WORKEXHIBITEDUSP’s Marvin Samson Center forthe History of Pharmacy isexhibiting a selection of originalmedical illustrations by FrankNetter, MD (1906–1991), aworld-renowned anatomy artistwho is regarded by many as themost accomplished and influentialmedical illustrator of thetwentieth century.The exhibitionat USP, titled Human/Humane:TheBioArt of Frank Netter, MD, wasput on display April 22 and willbe available for public viewinguntil July 21.The exhibition will consist of47 unique gouache—watercolor—paintings from a corpus of morethan 4,000 of Dr. Netter’s worksthat illustrate various aspects ofillness, trauma, anatomy, development,malformation, pathology,medical testing and diagnosis,and patient care. Many of theseimpressive illustrations, commissionedby Ciba-GeigyCorporation over severaldecades, appeared in ClinicalSymposia, a well-known quarterlyclinical monograph used byprimary care professionals as ateaching aid and reference.Through the generosity ofNovartis Pharmaceuticals—created by the 1996 merger ofthe Swiss-based Sandoz andCiba-Geigy Corporation— USPis able to display these importantworks for three months.Dr. Netter believed that medicalillustrations played a vitalrole in teaching as well as in thedevelopment of medical specialties,such as surgery and pathology.His association with the CibaPharmaceutical Company beganin the 1930s, when he beganpainting pictures to convey informationabout new products tothe medical profession.The firstcollection of Dr. Netter’s medicalillustrations, printed in book formin 1948, received such an enthusiasticreception by the medicalprofession that Ciba was encouragedto expand the program bycreating a series of volumes thatwould portray the anatomy andpathology of all systems of thehuman organism. All rights reserved.STUDENT CHARITY AUCTION RAISES MONEY FOR MANNAUSP’s Department of Student Life held its annual charity auction,Make a Deal For a Devil, on February 9.The event gives USP studentsan opportunity to have fun while giving back to the community. Makea Deal for a Devil is a charity auction that allowed students to bid onitems such as dinner with a Student Affairs Staff member, a dinner at alocal restaurant, a fitness package to a local gym, or a trendy hair styleand a relaxing facial from an exclusive beauty salon.The auction raised$1,925, which was donated to the Metropolitan AIDS NeighborhoodNutrition Alliance (MANNA) a nonprofit organization that providesdirect nutritional support and promotes wellness through nutritionalcounseling and education to individuals and families living withHIV/AIDS.PENNSYLVANIA SECRETARYOF HEALTH CELEBRATES BLACKHISTORY AT USPCalvin B. Johnson, MD, secretary of thePennsylvania Department of Health, presenteda lecture at USP on February 3 incelebration of Black History Month. Dr.Johnson, who serves as the primary publichealth advocate and spokesperson forPennsylvania, spoke to USP students, faculty, and staff on “TheImportance of Health Careers in the 21st Century.”At the beginning of his presentation, he noted that 8.4 percent ofthe residents of Pennsylvania over the age of 30 are African American.He added that African Americans in Pennsylvania constitute just 2.8percent of registered nurses, 2.1 percent of physicians, 1.7 percent ofphysical therapists, 2.6 percent of occupational therapists, and 3.5 percentof pharmacists. He said that, although employment in these areasis expected to grow in the near future, “we’re not where we shouldbe, but we have opportunities to get where we should be.”Dr. Johnson talked about the current health care crisis and thecontinuing rise in health care costs. He also spoke about the importanceof diversity among health care professionals and implored studentsto become politically educated and active. “The world needsyou to make a difference and save lives,” he said in his closingremarks. “Thank you for what you are doing, and keep doing it.”The lecture was sponsored by the USP Black Student Union andthe Division of Student Affairs.In Dr. Johnson’s current role, he acts as the senior advisor toPennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell on health matters, identifyingpriorities and outlining objectives to achieving these goals.
