Over the austral summer of 1998-1999 within theMarquesas Islands pantropical spotted dolphin, spinnerdolphin, bottlenose dolphin, melon-headed whale,rough-toothed dolphin, Risso’s dolphin, orca, false killerwhale, short-finned pilot whale, and, pygmy killer whalewere sighted (Gannier 2002a). Historical records alsoexist for short-finned pilot whale (Rancurel 1973).UNEP-WCMC (2003) reports French Polynesia is part ofthe geographic range of fin and pygmy Bryde’s whales. Aspecies of common dolphin, minke whale, sei whale, andblue whale have all tentatively been identified as occurringwithin French Polynesian waters yet have not beenconfirmed (SPWRC 2004). 6. GuamLand Area (km 2 ): 541Sea Area (EEZ) (thousands of km 2 ): 218Guam is the largest and most southerly of theMariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Thecountry is divided into a northern plateau and asouthern chain of volcanic hills.Cetacean records for the small nation of Guam includenumerous stranding records. More specifically, thefollowing species have been reported in a stranding orbeaching event: Bryde’s whale, pygmy sperm whale,dwarf sperm whale, orca, melon-headed whale, spermwhale, striped dolphin, and spinner dolphin (Eldredge1991, Kami and Lujan 1976, Reeves et al. 1999, Trianniand Kessler 2002). It is difficult to be certain whetherthese species inhabit Guam on a regular basis as theymay have been washed ashore.Spinner dolphins have been observed swimming in theSaipan Lagoon area (Trianni and Kessler 2002). Kamiand Hosmer (1982) indicated that short-finned pilotwhales were very common around Guam and othersconfirmed their presence in these waters (Birkeland1977 in Reeves et al. 1999). Miyazaki and Wada(1978) reported on the presence of Risso’s dolphin inthis area. The geographic range of dwarf sperm whaleincludes Guam (UNEP-WCMC 2003).
