Johnston pers. comm.).More dated records provide evidence that Cuvier’sbeaked whale, common dolphin and false killer whaleshave been observed in the Mariana and Bonin Islandsareas (Masaki 1972).UNEP-WCMC (2003) notes Northern Mariana Islandsas part of the geographic range of Kogia breviceps,while Kami and Lujan (1976) noted an anecdotalreport of small sperm whales (species not given) beingdriven from a shallow lagoon onto shore. The UNEP-WCMC (2003) also includes the Northern MarianaIslands as part of the geographic range of bottlenosedolphins and humpback whales. The presence of thelatter species was tentatively confirmed in Reeves etal. (1999) who indicated that northern hemispherepopulations (specifically the Asian stock) mightmove into these waters during the austral summer.Humpback whale presence has been confirmed byrecent observation (D. Such reports include a pod of orcaphotographed in April 1993 (Rock 1993 in Reeves etal. 1999) and it was inferred from local reports thattheir presence was not unusual. Other reports alsoaffirm the presence of orca in Palau (Iwashita 1963,Reeves et al. 1999) as did relatively recent communityconsultations that identified both orca and spermwhale in the region (PCS 2003). Melon-headedwhales have been documented to strand on the Palaucoast (Donaldson 1983). Anecdotal reports have alsoplaced short-finned pilot whales (in Reeves et al. 1999)and striped dolphins (Miyazaki and Wada 1978) inPalau waters yet further details around each of thesesightings is not given.Dated records for false killer whale and pantropicalspotted dolphin have been reported (Eldredge 1991).Reports of Risso’s, Fraser’s, and spinner dolphin, aswell as Cuvier’s beaked whale that appear to be within(or very close to) the Palau EEZ were summarized byEldredge (1991).
