Such reports include a pod of orcaphotographed in April 1993 (Rock 1993 in Reeves etal. 1999) and it was inferred from local reports thattheir presence was not unusual. Other reports alsoaffirm the presence of orca in Palau (Iwashita 1963,Reeves et al. 1999) as did relatively recent communityconsultations that identified both orca and spermwhale in the region (PCS 2003). Melon-headedwhales have been documented to strand on the Palaucoast (Donaldson 1983). Anecdotal reports have alsoplaced short-finned pilot whales (in Reeves et al. 1999)and striped dolphins (Miyazaki and Wada 1978) inPalau waters yet further details around each of thesesightings is not given.Dated records for false killer whale and pantropicalspotted dolphin have been reported (Eldredge 1991).Reports of Risso’s, Fraser’s, and spinner dolphin, aswell as Cuvier’s beaked whale that appear to be within(or very close to) the Palau EEZ were summarized byEldredge (1991). Finally, careful review of whalingrecords showed that takes of Bryde’s whales (speciesnot confirmed) occurred within the Palau EEZ in the1980s (Perrin 2006).CURRENT STATE OF KNOWLEDGE OF CETACEAN THREATS, DIVERSITY, AND HABITATS IN THE PACIFIC ISLANDS REGION 51
