Well, we decidedthat <strong>the</strong>re is more to it. That is, that wedeserve to know more about JulijaDzigulska and she deserves us to knowmore about her.BackgroundJulija was born <strong>in</strong> Riga on <strong>the</strong> 23 rdMarch, 1986. Those who are <strong>in</strong>terested<strong>in</strong> astrology probably can calculate tha<strong>the</strong>r sign is Aries. Only three weeks afterher birth her parents took her to Kiev.Right at this time <strong>the</strong> catastrophe <strong>in</strong>Chernobyl happened, and Julija’s fa<strong>the</strong>rwanted to participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sav<strong>in</strong>g operations.Luckily, he never did as <strong>the</strong>yreturned back to Riga. Moreover,she also skipped 4 th grade and evenwanted to skip one more. There are noregrets or thoughts about lost childhoodas Julija has always found communicat<strong>in</strong>gwith older people very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g.She says that one always can belike a child if wants; however, it takes alot to become an adult. Dur<strong>in</strong>g herschool years Julija used to say to herolder friends that <strong>the</strong>y should listen to<strong>the</strong> oldest and <strong>the</strong> smartest one, that is,her. And her friends laughed and neverconsidered her age to be someth<strong>in</strong>gnegative.FamilyJulija has no sisters or bro<strong>the</strong>rs andlives toge<strong>the</strong>r with her fa<strong>the</strong>r, who hasalways been <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> family figure forher. When she was only two years old,her fa<strong>the</strong>r taught her to swim. He justleft her <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> water alone and let swimto <strong>the</strong> coast on her own. And it was onlyone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many cases when Julija’s fa<strong>the</strong>rtaught her to be <strong>in</strong>dependent anddiscipl<strong>in</strong>ed. Until shereached a po<strong>in</strong>t whenshe understood thatwhen <strong>the</strong>re were somany <strong>in</strong>terestsshe could notpay enoughattention to any<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. And soshe chose track and field - discipl<strong>in</strong>e andchallenge.MotorcyclesTo my m<strong>in</strong>d, it deserves to be separatedfrom all o<strong>the</strong>r hobbies. Whenspeak<strong>in</strong>g about her fa<strong>the</strong>r, Julija addsthat he is somewhat crazy <strong>in</strong> a goodsense. He drives a motorcycle and Julijacannot wait when <strong>the</strong>y will be able totake a ride aga<strong>in</strong>. Julija is fond <strong>of</strong> motorcyclesand plans to have a license fordriv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nearest future. “I evenprefer MotoGP to F1. I know manywon’t understand this, but I really do.”NudismAmong all o<strong>the</strong>r hobbies Julija alsomentions travel<strong>in</strong>g. She has been tomany countries but remembers a tripto <strong>the</strong> Caucasus with most enthusiasm.Her fa<strong>the</strong>r took her on this trip and <strong>the</strong>ywere liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> tents for two weeks andswimm<strong>in</strong>g naked <strong>in</strong> a lake. Julija addsthat now she also goes to <strong>the</strong> nudebeaches sometimes. “There are not a lot<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, so if anyone wants to f<strong>in</strong>d me,The <strong>Insider</strong> #3 (64), May 2004; Page 9PERSONALITYJulija was left home alone for a monthfor <strong>the</strong> first time. When she was 13, herfa<strong>the</strong>r went away for 3 years and shelived on her own. Julija remembers <strong>the</strong>first few weeks after <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> herfa<strong>the</strong>r to be a nightmare as she had got-ten so used to live alone. “My Mom saysI’m egoistic,” she expla<strong>in</strong>s. “When I cookit will be pretty easy,” she says.SAWhen asked about <strong>the</strong> reason whyshe wanted to become <strong>the</strong> president <strong>of</strong>SA, Julija replies that <strong>the</strong> moment shecame to SSE she had set herself a goal –ei<strong>the</strong>r she becomes a top scorer or <strong>the</strong>president <strong>of</strong> SA. “I did not manage toget top scores,” she smiles. Now, whensome time after <strong>the</strong> change <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SAboard has passed, f<strong>in</strong>ally everyth<strong>in</strong>ghas started to function properly. At<strong>the</strong> very beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g it was a com-plete chaos as everyone <strong>in</strong> SAhad a different op<strong>in</strong>ionon how <strong>the</strong> work shouldbe done.TimeJulija does not compla<strong>in</strong>about <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong>time. Not once she men-tions time dur<strong>in</strong>g our<strong>in</strong>terview. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gsafter lectures, meet<strong>in</strong>gher friends after-wards, usually go<strong>in</strong>gto sleep not later thanmidnight, study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>trolleybuses and a fewdays before exams(which is a commonpractice not only forJulija). “The more youdo, <strong>the</strong> more time youhave,” she optimisticallyremarks and Istart to wonder where all <strong>of</strong> my timegoes.Strip?When we move to <strong>the</strong> discussion <strong>of</strong>what pictures to put <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> article, I saythat <strong>the</strong>re are plenty <strong>of</strong> photos <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> SAhomepage. Julija smiles and says thatfor this time it might be better to usesome o<strong>the</strong>r photos. The somewhat oldtopic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old vs. new SA board competitionis brought up aga<strong>in</strong>. Julija saysthat she did not know what exactly wasgo<strong>in</strong>g to happen. “I was not confused asI knew that many people have seen me<strong>in</strong> a swimm<strong>in</strong>g suit, so why should thisbe different? And what is more, I knewit will br<strong>in</strong>g joy and fun to <strong>the</strong> audience,so why not?”I must say I was a little bit surprisedwhen I found out that Julija does nothave any audio sound system at home.But when I gave it a thought later, I realizedthat it makes sense. She movesaround almost all <strong>the</strong> time and has somany o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs to hear…
