IST Design Studio October 2003_____________________________________________________________________________Today’s activities in industry are characterized by an increasing collaboration betweenproduct development and the manufacturing process. The research programs to bepromoted through the IST Design Studio will, like the industrial process itself, both treatproduct development and manufacture, but with different emphasis. The goal is toachieve a holistic view of the entire process. This approach is essential since it is on onehand important to treat product development with a perspective from the manufacturingside and on the other hand to treat issues regarding the manufacturing process with aperspective from product development. In this context the IST Design Studio agenda will be implemented based on a matrix ofstrategic scientific areas and integrating projects, as in Figure 5.While the scientific areas represent disciplinary-based knowledge in the waytraditionally developed in engineering schools, the integrating projects are the actualcross-functional tools to achieve the required practical relevance of the Agenda. Theseprojects will appear in clusters and should allow the clear implementation of industrysciencerelationships. The Agenda will be implemented by integrating expertise in eight different groups ofscientific areas, including:o Materials and Manufacturing Technologieso Mechanicso Electronics and Microsystemso SustainabilityO Simulation and virtual prototypingO Systems & design methodsO Management of technology and business innovationO DesignThe projects considered of strategic value for Portugal by the time of the definition ofthe IST Design Studio are grouped in the following topics:o Autoparts for the futureo Train applicationso Sustainable mobilityo Design for citizenshipo Collaborative designAreas of future development under planning include:o Aero components and systemso Miniaturized equipments and systemso Human - body interfacing and interactiono MIMICS – configurable and adaptive surfaces___________________________________________________________________www.istdesignstudio.net 11
