IST Design Studio October 2003_____________________________________________________________________________6. “HANDS-ON”The IST Design Studio will be promoted together with a new initiative aimed atfostering the study and detailed analysis of real engineering products, making use ofreverse engineering processes and major benchmark and modelling activities. The products to be analysed will include 1:1 automobiles, prototypes and componentsof cars, trains and airplanes, which will be dismantled and assessed by groups ofstudents. At the same time, the work will involve detailed benchmark analysis, togetherwith the numerical simulation of the parts under analysis. The aim is to allowengineering students and researchers to get full insight into real life products and toconceive alternative solutions.By the time of launching the IST Design Studio, two cars designed by Pininfarina andoffered to IST will be used to implement these activities, namely a Peugeot 406 Coupéand a Lancia Kappa SW.7. Education and TrainingAn important objective of the IST Design Studio is to create a new forum for researchand education, emphasizing those qualities that industry seeks in licentiates, masters anddoctors in engineering design. The studio will also provide the foundation for attractingtop-quality students by providing a network favouring mobility of people in nationaland international terms.7.1 Degree ProgrammesThe IST Design Studio is centred on activities developed through the IST´s M.Sc. on“Engineering Design”, http://in3.dem.ist.utl.pt/mscdesign/, in close collaboration withindustry, bringing together staff, researchers and students from the IST´s Department ofMechanical Engineering, as well as from the Department of Engineering andManagement Science, the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture and theDepartment of Informatics. This is a new M.Sc. programme is aimed to promote advanced education in engineeringdesign, with emphasis on the interaction of advanced engineering skills with thenecessary design competences for new product development. The programme has beenconceived in particular cooperation with major industries in Portugal in the area of theautoparts sector, train applications, and consumer goods.Planning a national PhD programme:An important objective of the staff particularly involved in the IST Design Studio is todevelop a new PhD programme in close international collaboration, in order to allowstudents to deepen engineering design skills in university environments cooperativelylinked through a “design studio”.In addition, a long term objective of the IST Design Studio is to develop the opportunityfor a multi-site university degree on engineering design, emphasizing a significant28
