IST Design Studio October 2003_____________________________________________________________________________9. Organization9.1 Overall management and OrganizationThe IST Design Studio has been launched and will be implemented based on a strategicpartnership involving various research groups at IST, in a way to promote synergies andfacilitate the development of competences on engineering design. The IST Design Studio is coordinated by the Director of the IST´s M.Sc in EngineeringDesign, together with the Professor responsible for the Design Course in the M.Sc. on“Engineering Design”.Four major Research Centers are involved in the promotion of the Studio, as describedin the following paragraphs.Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research, IN+The activities of this Center are multidisciplinary, linking basic and applied research totechnology development, and focused on the issues of sustainability, namely in terms ofthe needs to secure the quality of the environment, together with the management ofenergy resources and the economic development. To achieve these objectives, theactivities of the Center are directed towards leading-edge developments and to promotethe learning ability of graduate engineering students. Besides the development of basicresearch on energy and environmental-related processes, the Center undertakesinterdisciplinary research involving technology and policy, promoting ways in whichindustrial development can proceed in a sustainable and socially responsible manner.Institute of Mechanical Engineering, IDMECThe Institute of Mechanical Engineering focus on the aspects of research, developmentand technology transfer in the different areas of mechanical engineering, namely inmechanical design, systems and control, manufacturing and management and in energy. The areas associated to mechanical design include the structural mechanics, dynamicsand vibration, smart structures, multibody dynamics, optimization, biomechanics, computer aided design, vehicle dynamics, crashworthiness, geometric modelling, noiseand experimental techniques. The groups dealing with systems and control focus on theapplication of modelling, identification and feedback control theory to dynamicsystems. The developments in the areas of metal forming, metal cutting, welding, casting, rapid prototyping and in industrial management are the focus of the research ofthe group of IDMEC dealing with manufacturing and management. Fundamentalresearch and developments in energy associated areas comprises specialists inconvective and radiative heat transfer, combustion and energy. The research anddevelopment objectives are achieved by directing the research towards industrialapplications that require technology development and by promoting the knowledgeinterchange between researchers and professionals and the learning ability of thegraduate students.Institute for Materials Science and Engineering, ICESMThe Institute focus on the aspects of research and development in the different areas ofmaterials science and engineering, including the testing and analysis of new materialsand application areas.32
IST Design Studio October 2003_____________________________________________________________________________Cooperative Virtual Environments Laboratoty, CVLab, at INESC-IDThe area of cooperative virtual environments has become strategically relevant, giventhe emergence of new interaction paradigms involving people and intelligent devicesand also between people in distinct geographical places. Within INESC-ID there iscritical mass in a number of disciplines relevant to virtual environments withcompetencies at the international level in different specialization areas:• Multimodal interaction with computational artifacts within virtual environmentsbased on synergistic recognition of multiple dialogue modalities.• Intelligent virtual environments combining computer graphics algorithms withgesture recognition and artificial intelligence techniques for creating syntheticbelievable environments.• Software architectures for virtual environments with a focus on real-time imagesynthesis, intelligent agent programming through the effective use of softwaredesign patters and component-based design.• Distributed Systems and ubiquitous computing focusing on objectdistribution, persistence, resource sharing and management, security, parallelismand mobility.• Models for mobile electronic commerce, companies and virtual organizationswith a special emphasis on logistics, transportation, management of informationand work flow as well as costumer mobility.9.2 Visiting CommitteeThe activities of the IST Design Studio will be developed under the general assessmentand discussion of a Visiting Committee, which will meet three times per year to discussongoing projects and to guide the directions of the Design Studio, together with that ofthe M.Sc in Engineering Design. The launching of the IST Design Studio will be made with following Committee:• Vasco Branco, Universidade de Aveirovab@ca.ua.pt• Marcel de Button, LOGOPLASTEmarceldebotton@logoplaste.pt• António Cruz, MODUS DESIGNmodusdesign@mail.telepac.pt• António Cunha, Universidade do Minhoamcunha@dep.uminho.pt• Rui Cunha, CEDP, Centro de Engenharia e Des. de Produtorcunha@inteli.pt• José Rui Felizardo, INTELI / CEIAjrf@inteli.pt• Francesco Furini, Pininfarina Spaf.furini@pininfarina.it• Paolo Garela, Pininfarina Spap.garella@pininfarina.it• Jorge Salles Gomes, BRISAjorge.gomes@brisa.pt• Jorge Gonçalves, ACECIA / AIS, Amorim Industrial Solutions33
