Under the "Local Government Act. 1888"! (51 & 52 Vict, c, 41), it was declared a " County Borough "Mersey railway, 192 miles from London, 15 from Chester,33 from Crewe, 54 from Shrewsbury, 89 from Birminghamand 162 from Oxford, in the Wirral division of thecounty of Chester, hundred of Wirral, parish ot Bidston, rural deanery of Birkenhead and archdeaconry and dioceseof Chester.for at the beginning of the last century it containedonly about 100 persons, 16 houses and the ruins of theancient priory, but its proximity to the greater seaportof Liverpool and the establishment here of additionaldocks have greatly assisted in its development. The Mersey raUway, which connects the town withLiverpool by means of a tunnel under the river, consistsof a double line, starting from a junction at Rock Ferrystation with the London and North Western and GreatWestern joint railways, passing through Green Lane andthe Central stations to Hamilton Square station andthence under the river, a distance of 2,100 yards, throughJames Street station to Bold street, which is the Liverpoolterminus. The Central station, which is also the depotof the company, is provided with engine and carriagesheds, gasworks and aU the general accessories requisitefor working the traffic; the roUing stock is fitted yviththe automatic brake and is hghted yvith gas.is connected, at Park station, by a hne from Hamiltonsquare with the Wirral railway, which runs through theDocks to Bidston junction, from whence there are branchlines to Wallasey and New Brighton, and through Moreton,Meols and Hoylake to West Kirby, which is theterminu?.1 for certain purposes.j By the Birkenhead Corporation Act, 1893, which cnme' into operation March 31, 1894, the townships formingThe railway I the Municipal borough were formed into one civil parish,1 named Birkenhead.j The streets of the toyvn are of good yvidth. and havingbeen built in modern times, are laid out principally atright angles to each other; communication yn'th Liverpoolis readily obtained by means of the ferry, to andfrom which steamers ply every few minutes, in addition

There are two yvells, sunk in the New RedSandstone rock to the depth of 160 feet, and bore-holesof various depths, the loyvest being 714 feet below thesurface; and there is also a covered reservoir holding600,000 gaUons, The wells yield 10,500,000 gallons perweek, raised by two pumping engines, each capable ofdeUvering 90,000 gaUons per hour. (2) Flay brick HiUWaterworks, completed in 1864. The well here, 15 by 9feet, is sunk to a depth of 205 feet. There are alsobore-holes sunk to a depth of 833 feet and 710 feet belowthe surface, and connected by a large heading with thewell, from which the water is raised by two pumpingengines, each capable of deUvering 64,000 gaUons perhour. The water tower contains a tank holding 104,000gallons and a covered reservoir holding 4,562,000 gaUons.(3) The Borough Road Waterworks, erected in 1861, forthe supply of Tranmere, was enlarged in 1871. Thereservoirs and high level tanks are about a quarter ofa mile distant from the engine bouse, and have a capacityof 1,599,563 gallons.Birkenhead Docks. The Birkenhead Docks, which are partly in Birkenheadand partly in Poulton-cum-Seacombe, belong to theMersey Docks and Harbour Board, who own all the docksin Liverpool. The area of the dock estate at Birkenheadis about 506 acres, of which the yvater area is 172acres, and the lineal measurement of quay, gj miles, and these docks occupy nearly one-third of the totalaiea of the docks under the management of theBoard, and the lineal quay measurement is aboutone quarter of the total quayage. The first Act of Parliamentfor docks at Birkeinhead was obtained in July,1844. Morpeth and Egerton docks were opened in 1847.After the constitution of the Mersey Docks and HarbourBoard in 1857, the Birkenhead docks were transferredby purchase to the Board, which has since developedthe dock estate to meet the wants of trade.Receipts at Birkenhead for j-ear ending July, 1909.£ s. d.Rates on goods inyvards 12,824 12 i,, ,, ,, outwards 45.029 «6 3Tonnage dues SViZSg 10 2Total rates on goods and tonnage dues 117,6+3 18 6Total tonnage of vessels.
