INTRODUCTIONElectronic Totalizing CountersELECTRONIC1TOTALIZINGA totalizer is a counter that sums the “total” number of cycles applied toits input. Many applications require only additive counting, but we alsooffer electronic totalizers with bidirectional (add and subtract) capabilityfor specialized application. Our brand names, VEEDER-ROOT and DYNAPAR and EAGLESIGNAL, are recognized worldwide for their innovative designs, quality, durability, and accuracy – and are backed by over 120 yearsexperience in development and application of counting and controllinginstruments. This expertise has led to state-of-the art electronictotalizing counters as well as the mechanical and electrical designsprovided in the preceding section.Common totalizer applications are: item or piece counting, machinecycle counting, material length measurement, position display, and fluidor gas volume totalizing.LENGTHMEASUREMENTTableEncoderCounterDrillPOSITION DISPLAYLeadscrewSignalPulserReflectorMeterPhotocellTOTALIZING COUNTER APPLICATIONSITEM COUNTINGLIQUID FLOWToday’s electronic totalizers bring the advantages of modern digitaldisplays, high counting speeds, silent operation and long life. Ourgeneral purpose types are comparably priced to other technologies andare very easy to install and use. Their high speed and compatibility witha variety of sensors makes them ideal for precise measurement oflength or position, as well as totalization of fast moving items, liquid/gasvolume, and other demanding tasks. For your most challenging applications, consider our state-of-the-artprogrammable totalizers. They offer maximum flexibility through userselectable advanced features such as: input calibrators, movabledecimal point, and bidirectional counting modes.DISPLAY TYPESWhile mechanical and electrical counters always present their countdisplay as printed characters on mechanical wheels, electroniccounters, provide solid-state display devices, the most popular beingLCD and LED technology.Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) are best suited for installation in areaswhere there is reasonably good lighting and are superior to most otherdisplay types when viewed in very bright ambient light; such as directsunlight. They may be difficult to view in very dimly lit areas, but somecounters overcome this problem through use of an internal light source.Light Emitting Diode (LED) displays, since they produce their ownlight, can be viewed in very dimly lit areas – even in the dark. Their highcontrast presentation makes them the preferred type when the displaymust be observed from a distance.SPECIFYING A TOTALIZERConsiderations when selecting a totalizing counter for your applicationare:■ Technology – Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic■ Input – What is to be counted and from where will the counter’s inputbe obtained?■ Count Speed – Speed ratings vary. Check Specifications.■ Number of Digits – Based on Maximum Count Value■ Type and Size of Display – Should accommodate operatingenvironment’s viewing and lighting conditions.■ Packaging – Mounting requirements and Enclosure Size■ Environmental – Temperature SpecificationAll of our totalizers provide a convenient push-button and remote signalinput for resetting to zero. Some models provide a means to disable thereset function when security of totals is an application consideration.ELECTRONIC INPUT SIGNALSElectronic counters need a signal that represents the unit to becounted. This is often a voltage pulse or contact closure that alreadyexists on your machine or process. However, for cases where no signalis available, a suitable sensor will have to be furnished. Anything thatcan be sensed can be counted and we offer several types of accessorysensors. There are four general categories of counting applications. Each has specialized sensing requirements:Group Example SensorItem Cartons, Parts, Bottles, Inductive ProximityCounting Cans, Sheets, Pencils, Capacitive Proximityor any other item.Photoelectric.Length Paper, Cloth, Steel, Textiles, Rotary EncodersMeasuring Lumber, or the linear Inductive Proximitymeasure of any othergoods.Positioning Assembly machinery, Drilling, Rotary EncodersPunching, Painting, or anyother precision movement.Specialized Fluid/Gas Volume, Medical, Flowmeter, ParticleScientific, or anything else sensor, or otherthat can be sensed.special device.Series H42 Series 31/32ENCODERSLCD DisplaySeries 7999 MITESeries A103LED DisplaySeries C628AWESOME DisplayMAX JR.
