This is effectively expla<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong>concept. Johnson <strong>an</strong>d Scholes (2002:160) def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong> as <strong>the</strong>description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong>d around <strong>an</strong> org<strong>an</strong>isation, which toge<strong>the</strong>r createa product or a service. Porter (1998, quoted <strong>in</strong> Johnson, Scholes, 2002:161)presents <strong>the</strong> value cha<strong>in</strong> as shown <strong>in</strong> figure 2.2.17
