2012 ALUMNI RAFTING TRIPColorado Adventure Very PopularSWIMMING PIONEERFINALLALLY Y HONORED“Alameda Mermaid” Has Ties to BUIn the last edition of the newsletter we featured a pieceabout putting together a BU Swimming Alumni trip downthe Colorado River in the summer of 2012. Jon Stoner‘72 has been guiding trips down the Colorado for manyyears and always wanted to get former BU swimmers toexperience the thrill of a lifetime with him.To date, BOTH rafts are filled with 28 brave souls who areall connected to each other through BU swimming. Eventhough the trip is full, much can happen in a year that mayforce people to opt out. Jon has seen this many times andhas encouraged us to keep a waiting list should folks haveto drop out.The trip is set for June 25 to July 2, 2012. It is a 7-DayRafting Adventure on the Colorado River from Lee’s Ferryto the Whitmore International Helicopter Pad, covering187 miles of the most notable whitewater and scenery inNorth America. When we first heardof the pigskin and the story behind it, Team Marvin wentto work to have Nell and her landmark swim recognizedby the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Ladies of theday in 1912 wouldn’t dream diving into San Francisco Bayto swim across it’s icy waters. Not so for a determinedNell Schmidt. Clad in a all-wool suit very much in the designof today’s tech suits, the petite 20 year old madeswimming history nearly 100 years ago.On Sunday, June 18th, 2011, in the Delegates Room at theUnited Nations in New York City, Nell Schmidt recievedofficial recognition of her famous swim from the InternationalMarathon Swimming Hall of Fame. It was the firststep in one day having her enshrined in the InternationalSwimming Hall of Fame as a Pioneer. Accepting on herbehalf was her son, George Hauck (a Pearl Harbor survior).Also present was Nell’s grandaughter, Dr. Robbie Soltz, BUPresident Dr. David Soltz, George’s wife Peggy Hauck, BUSwim Coach Stu Marvin, his wife Meg and their two boys.Waiting ListMiranda SteelSteve Munatones (International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame),George Hauck, Dr. Robbie Sotlz, Dale Petranech (International MarathonSwimming Hall of Fame), and “The Pigskin” outside the U.N.
