ThisLaboratory has been made possible through a generouscontribution by the alumni of the MBBS batch of <strong>19</strong>58-59. At theinauguration, the batch was represented by Dr. S. Balasubramanium,Dr. Ulhas Balasubramanium, Dr. Ratna Sukumaran and Dr. AmmuSivaraman.The Simulation Laboratory is designed and equipped like an ICUroom. It has two high fidelity patient simulators, the SimMan 3G andthe SimBaby and an obstetric task trainer called PROMPT.The SimMan and SimBaby simulators provide healthcare professionalsand students the opportunity to learn and practice treatment in a realisticenvironment. The mannequins have the ability to talk while care isbeing provided, thus enhancing the realism. The AssociateDirector and Head of the Division of Surgery, Dr. John C. Muthusami,inaugurated the programme. In his address, he shared his experience inthe field of wound and enterostomal care and commended the effortsof the faculty of the <strong>College</strong> of Nursing. Dr. Punitha Ezhilarasu, Head of the Departments of CNE and Research andSurgical Nursing, gave a brief of the objectives of the workshop. The Dean, <strong>College</strong> of Nursing, Mrs. Rosaline Jayakaranand the Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Jayarani Premkumar offered their felicitations on the occasion. The workshop wasattended by 31 participants. The resource faculty at the workshop were Dr. Mark Ranjan Jesudasan, Acting Head of theDepartment of Colorectal Surgery, Dr. Albert Abhinay Kota, Assistant Professor, Surgery IV, Dr. Punitha Ezhilarasu,Mrs. Ida Nirmal, the Enterostomal Therapist and faculty of the Departments of CNE and Research, Surgical Nursing and<strong>Medical</strong> Surgical Nursing Specialty-I. The sessions included case presentations, quiz, simulation, role play, lectures anddiscussions. The workshop was appreciated by the participants.NEWS FROM THE MEDICAL RECORDS DEPARTMENTOn March 8, 2012, the renovated <strong>Medical</strong> Records Department and the newlyintroduced Record Scanning Facility were dedicated. Rev. Paul Ravikumar saidthe opening prayer. Dr. Paul Ravindran, Acting Head of the <strong>Medical</strong> RecordsDepartment, spoke about the new scanning facility and its benefit to physiciansand patients. He also encouraged doctors to utilize the facility of online viewing ofrecords. A lecture full of memories and reflections, itwas an opportunity for Professor Chacko to share the sum of his personal andprofessional journey thus far. A chance meeting with Professor Jacob Abraham,the then Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, brought him to CMC, and thusbegan his 37 years association with the institution. Professor Chacko recalled hispostgraduate days in the Department of Medicine and later in Gastroenterology andthe many faculty who mentored him- Dr. T.S.Koshy, Dr. Abraham Verghese,Dr. B.M. Pulimood, among others. During his study leave in England, he was fortunateto work with Professor John Cummings, a pioneer in human nutrition, from whom he learnt research and then somemore. He traced the growth of the Division of Gastrointestinal Sciences, particularly the aspects of sub specializations,team work and the culture of caring that have sustained the Department, making it one of the best in the country.He recounted dark days of setbacks and illness, but vouched for the Grace of God.
