No. 08 FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION ONLY AUGUST <strong>20</strong>, <strong>20</strong>12MEDICAL ALUMNI REUNIONThe <strong>Medical</strong> Alumni Reunion was held from August 9 to 11, <strong>20</strong>12.Over 155 alumni from various parts of the world gathered in Velloreto take part in the celebrations. The special batches this year were1942, 1947,1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982 and 1987.The celebrations commenced with a CME session on August 9,<strong>20</strong>12. The speakers included Dr. Ashok R. Venkitaraman (1977),Dr. Nihal Thomas (1982), Dr. Jyotsna Agarwal (1987) andDr. N. Murali (1987).The following day, the representatives of the special reunionbatches shared their experiences with those at CMC, especially withthe medical students. The alumni who spoke includedDr. J.Gowrishankar (1972), Dr. Gunaseelan Ambrose (1977),Dr. Chandy Abraham (1982), Drs. Rajiv and Deepa Choudhrie(1982) and Drs. Thomas Benjamin Pulimood and Rebecca Jacob(1987).The General Reunion on August 11, <strong>20</strong>12 began with an openmeeting in the Senate Hall. Dr. Raj Dayal Singh (1974) was presentedthe Dr. Emmanuel Sunder Raj Award in recognition of thecommitment that he has shown in the <strong>Christian</strong> healing mission.The Alumni Association presented the Alumni Award toDr. A.S. Kanagasabapathy, former Professor and Head of ClinicalBiochemistry, in recognition of his exemplary contribution to improvingthe quality in the clinical laboratories in India, and his excellentinteraction with staff and students of the CMC community andVellore. Dr. Dilip Mathai,Dr. Victoria Job, Dr. Honorine Ward, Dr. Chiramel George Koshy and Dr. Sudha Jasmine handed over their offices andwere thanked for their distinguished services.At the Thanksgiving Service in the <strong>College</strong> Chapel, Dr. Lenny Susan Markose (1972) gave a thought provoking message.The newest batch of alumni, the present interns, were given the charge to serve and not to seek to be served.Later that evening, Drs. Shalini and Anil Ninan Cherian (1983) were honoured with the <strong>College</strong> Motto Award for theirlife of faith and commitment, effectively translated to one of service in the spirit of our alma mater. The informal entertainmentby the special batches went on till late into the night. The following day, the special batches of 1987 and 1982 arrangeda lunch at Alumni House. The alumni left with loads of photographs and memories of happy times spent in Vellore.Dr. A.S. Kanagasabapathy receiving the Alumni AwardBREAST FEEDING WEEK CELEBRATIONSDrs. Shalini and Anil Cherian receiving the <strong>College</strong> Motto AwardWorld Breast Feeding Week was celebrated by the Departments of MaternityNursing, Paediatric Nursing, Neonatology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and theDivision of Child Health. The theme for this year's celebration was 'Understandingthe past and preparing for the future.' At the inaugural function, held on August01, <strong>20</strong>12 in the G4 South Ward, Dr. Alice George, Professor and Head of theDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was the Chief Guest. The nursingstudents, through folk songs and skits, promoted the message of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child's life. Mothers in the Maternity wards andOPD were educated on breast feeding. As part of the outreach programme, ateam visited Auxilium <strong>College</strong>, Vellore and an awareness programme wasconducted for the final year and postgraduate students. A quiz was conducted for the nursing staff of the MaternityDepartment.In the celebration organised by the Paediatric Nursing Department and the Division of Child Health, an introductorysession was held in the Well Baby Clinic, where the importance of exclusive breast feeding till 6 months to 2 years andabove and the introduction of appropriate, indigenous complementary feeding from 6 months onwards was emphasized.An outreach programme was also held in LCECU and the Anganwadi School, where Mrs. Sundari Edwin, Professor andHead of Paediatric Nursing spoke to the women's group. An in-service awareness programme was conducted for thestaff nurses and housekeeping staff of the institution on the theme of the World Breast Feeding Week. A number ofcompetitions were also organised for the nursing students and staff.

He will represent India at the Novartis International Biocamp in Basel, Switzerland in August <strong>20</strong>12.INDEPENDENCE DAY Y CELEBRATIONSOn August 15, <strong>20</strong>12, the institution celebrated India’s 66 th Independence Day,recalling the day the nation ‘made a tryst with destiny.’ In the Hospital Campus, theAssociate Director, Dr. D.J.Christopher unfurled the national flag. He, along withMr. IK Chellasamy, the Chief Security Officer, inspected a guard of honour.In the <strong>College</strong> Campus, Dr. Reena Mary George, Head of Palliative Care unfurled theTricolour.NEWS FROM CLINICAL VIROLOLOGOGYThe following workshops were conducted by the Department ofClinical Virology (National Reference Laboratory under NACO) :i) A two day workshop on 'GLP in CD4 testing' for laboratorytechnicians from ART Centres of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Keralawas held on June 7 and 8, <strong>20</strong>12 and July 12 and 13, <strong>20</strong>12. A totalof 27 technologists from various ART centres participated in thisworkshop.ii) A two day workshop on 'HIV EQAS' for Technical Officers andLaboratory Technicians was held on July 31 and August 1, <strong>20</strong>12. This was under the aegis of the EQAS Programmeorganized by National AIDS Control Organization, New Delhi. Technical Officers and Technologists from the four StateReference Laboratories of Government <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>College</strong>s in Kerala participated in this workshop.PEGASUS <strong>20</strong>12Pegasus <strong>20</strong>12 was conducted from July 16 to 21, <strong>20</strong>12. Nearly 1,800students from 67 colleges participated in this sports and cultural festival. CMC,Vellore won the overall championship among medical collegesin sports and MOP Vaishnava <strong>College</strong>, Chennai won the same amongnon-medical colleges.
