P37CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS FROM Murraya Koenigii andKaempferia angustifolia.R.C. Ng, N. Buhera, M.N Ibrahim, M.A. Sukari*Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 UPMSerdang, Selangor, MalaysiaCorresponding author: aspollah@science.upm.edu.myPhytochemical investigation has been carried out on stem bark and roots of MurrayaKoenigiias well as rhizomes of Kaempferia angustifolia. The dried sample wasground into fine powder and extracted successively by cold percolation with hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate as the solvents respectively. Isolation and purificationwork onM. Koeningii extracts afforded three carbazole alkaloids known asgirinimbine, murrayanine, and mahanimbine. On the contrary, detailed investigationon rhizomes of K.angustifolia has led to the isolation of abietenediterpene identifiedas kaempfolienol. These compounds were separated from the extracts by variouschromatographic techniques such as thin layer chromatography, columnchromatography, and vacuum liquid chromatography. Their structures wereestablished by interpretation of IR, GC-MS and NMR as well as comparison withpublished data.52 |16 th Industrial Chemistry Seminar: Chemistry- A Passport to a Brighter Future
