P51 SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MIXED-LIGANDTRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES CONTAINING IMIDAZOLEDERIVATIVES AND SACCHARINF.E. Abd Aziz, N. Mohd Mokhtaruddin, Thahira BSA Ravoof*Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 UPMSerdang, Selangor, MalaysiaCorresponding author: thahira.begum@science.upm.edu.myThe starting ligand, dithiocarbazate (NH 2 NHCS 2 - ) was prepared by the reactionbetween hydrazine hydrate (NH 2 NH 2 H 2 O) and carbon disulfide (CS 2 ) with theaddition of benzyl chloride derivatives. Condensation reaction between the startingligand and aldehyde derivatives which are pyridine-2-aldehyde, 6-methylpyridine-2-aldehyde and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde produced Schiff bases. Metal complexeswill be produced by the reaction of Schiff bases ligand with Ni (II) and Cu (II) metalions. New mixed-ligand metal complexes of general empirical formula[Ni(ONS/NNS)(bzd)], [Ni(ONS/NNS)(im)] and [Cu(NNS)(sac)] have beensynthesized and characterized by conductance, magnetic, IR and electronicspectroscopic techniques. Magnetic and spectral evidence indicate that all theparamagnetic complexes are four coordinates and have the distorted square planarstructure. The Schiff bases are coordinated to the metal ions as tridentate NNSchelates via the pyridine nitrogen atom, the azomethine nitrogen atom and the thiolatesulphur atom while ONS chelates via the phenolic oxygen, the azomethine nitrogenatom and the thiolate sulphur atom. The saccharinate anion, imidazole anion andbenzimidazole anion coordinated as a unidentate and donor ligand. All the metalcomplexes are non-electrolytes in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO).66 |16 th Industrial Chemistry Seminar: Chemistry- A Passport to a Brighter Future
