SAVE YOURSELF A TRIP TO THE TIPCouncil’s annual hard and green waste kerbside collection begins in parts of Monash this week.Brochures will soon, if they haven’t already,arrive in letterboxes outlining dates ofcollections in each part of the City, as wellas information about what can and cannotbe put out for collection.Last year, Monash residents put out 5,419tonnes of hard rubbish for collection, whichincluded 674 tonnes of green waste.As three separate trucks pick up the items,residents should place their hard rubbishinto three distinct, neat piles.The three different collections are:» Hard waste: such as carpet, televisions,computers and household furniture;» Green waste: including tree stumps orroots, prunings and grass clippings; and» Metals and whitegoods: fridges (withdoors removed), scrap metal and hot watersystems etc.To ensure that our streets don’t end uplooking like a rubbish tip, we ask people tonot place their items out for collection untilthe weekend before their pick up.Catching Mount Waverley rainMount Waverley Reserve is set to become the home of a new waterharvesting plant, capturing the rainwater run-off from the covered roof of theneighbouring Melbourne Water Reservoir.The project is being jointly funded by Monash City Council and the Australian Government, eachcommitting $160,000 towards the total project cost of $320,000.Monash Council has accepted the tender of $269,571.23 including GST from Planned IrrigationProjects P/L to undertake the construction and installation of a water harvesting plant, whichinvolves five water tanks, associated pumps and pump house and connections.The runoff from the reservoir roof is currently flowing directly into the stormwater system. Thewater harvesting plant is expected to reduce dependence on potable water by supplementingan estimated 13.4 megalitres a year, the equivalent of more than five Olympic-sized swimmingpools. This water will be utilised to irrigate the sports field which is used by the Eastern FootballLeague, Waverley Blues Football Club and the Mount Waverley Cricket Club. The water will alsohelp maintain the nearby en-tous-cas tennis courts, toilet flushing at the reserve and publictrees on nature strips and Monash reserves.The construction of the water harvesting project is expected to commence in August with worksbeing completed by October.Hard and green waste should be placed onnature strips before 6am on the Monday ofthe collection week and all items must beable to be lifted to shoulder height by twopeople, meaning items cannot be heavierthan 50kg or longer than 1.5m.For more information about the annual hardwaste collection, including collection dates andareas, visit www.monash.vic.gov.au/community/waste-annual.htm or phone 9518 3690. |m|TREE ASSESSMENTSERVICECouncil has reintroduced a treeassessment service for residentswith trees in Vegetation ProtectionOverlay (VPO) areas across the City.Information is now available on Council’swebsite regarding tree removal and treeworks on private property in VPO areas. Thewebsite also contains preliminary assessmentapplication forms as well as an easy-to-readmap highlighting VPO areas.If a tree presents an immediate danger, thisservice should not be relied upon.
