tChapter 4PFC Monitoring and ProtectiontProtection of capacitors and PFC devicesDepending on the level of the overload as well as the amount of energy introduced and the other application conditions, an overloadmay cause a capacitor to collapse. If capacitor overloads of this nature occur, it cannot be assumed that the current, commonly-used protectionmechanisms on the market are sufficiently effective.Upstream HRC fuses or circuit breakers are primarily usedfor short-circuits. The capacitor overpressure disconnectorprotects the capacitor against explosions in the event of constantinternal overpressure. However, the capacitor overpressuredisconnector does not offer 100% security in every faultor overload scenario. In the case of highly dynamic incidentssuch as a low-resistance short-circuit, the capacitor overpressuredisconnector acts too slowly and furthermore, whenused with capacitors available on the market, will be rendereduseless as soon as the active winding collapses.In the event of an error, it may give rise to short-circuits withmore or less energy transfer in the capacitor. The levels ofenergy introduced in the capacitor frequently exceed the specifications and in certain circumstances may cause the capacitor casing toexplode.
