Nor is it accidental that the front coverof Leeds Met Acts (a statement of the attitudes,character and talents expected of members ofour university community) shows students andstaff together with a local guide at the conclusionof an international volunteering opportunity inIndonesia, the inside cover shows the platformparty at a summer graduation all focused onapplauding a graduating student and the backcover shows colleagues and governorsapplauding staff winners of the Chancellor’sAwards. The enthusiasm of students, staff,alumni and partner organisations provides themomentum which will sustain enduringinstitutional change.Simon Lee,Vice-Chancellor,Leeds Metropolitan <strong>University</strong>Professor Simon Lee became theVice-Chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan<strong>University</strong> in 2003. He had studied as aBrackenbury Scholar at Balliol College, Oxfordand then a Harkness Fellow at Yale Law Schoolbefore becoming a lecturer in law at TrinityCollege, Oxford and then King’s CollegeLondon. He was appointed Professor ofJurisprudence at Queen’s <strong>University</strong> Belfast inJanuary 1989 where he also served as Deanof the Faculty of Law, before becoming anemeritus professor of Queen’s when he left inSeptember 1995 to take up the role of Rector& Chief Executive at Liverpool Hope <strong>University</strong>College. Professor Lee is the author of severalbooks and has served on a number ofgovernment and voluntary sector bodies, suchas the Standing Advisory Commission onHuman Rights in Northern Ireland, andchaired others, such as the IndependentMonitoring Board for the Liverpool educationauthority, the board of the Everyman &Playhouse theatres and now of LeedsCarnegie, the professional rugbyunion team.Elspeth Jones,International Dean,Leeds Metropolitan <strong>University</strong>As International Dean at Leeds Metropolitan<strong>University</strong> Elspeth is responsible for leadingthe <strong>University</strong>’s ambitious internationalisationplans. These include all aspects of theinternational student experience, fromrecruitment to alumni relations,internationalisation for home students, andassociated staff development.With a background in applied linguistics andteaching English as a foreign language,Elspeth has many years’ experience oflearning, assessment and cross-culturalissues for students from a wide variety ofnationalities and cultural backgrounds.She worked at the British Council in Japan forthree years and in Singapore for four years.As Secretary of the <strong>University</strong> Council ofModern Languages, Elspeth was involved innational debates on the future of languagesin the UK and co-edited Setting the Agendafor Languages in Higher Education withDavid Head, Mike Kelly and Teresa Tinsley(National Centre for Languages, 2003). Sheis currently editing her next book entitled,Internationalisation: the Student Voice. Shehas delivered keynote speeches around theworld and authored a range of chapters andpapers on values-driven internationalisationand world-wide horizons.
