UBC isalready part of a growing network of learningthat encompasses the globe; we must strengthenestablished links and develop new ones throughenhanced student mobility and study abroadprograms, faculty and staff exchangeopportunities, and educational consortia.We shall encourage research projects that linkUBC faculty and students with their peers aroundthe world, including projects that address globalproblems in health, safety, economic opportunity,human rights, and environmental integrity.The <strong>University</strong> will seek to broaden globalawareness both on and off the campus throughinnovative programs and educational outreach ina variety of formats. We shall also attempt tomake the concept of global citizenship anintegral part of undergraduate learning throughits introduction into our core programs. We shallwork to increase understanding of Aboriginalcultures in other parts of the world, and bringscholars from many different cultures to UBC.Goals and Strategies• Strengthen Global Awareness Through DegreePrograms, Public Lectures, and Conferences.• Include ‘global content’ in programs,wherever possible and appropriate, to ensurestudents are presented with global issues,concerns, and solutions as part of theirdisciplinary or professional studies.• Develop new programs on global citizenship,civil society, and related issues, intended foraudiences both on and off campus.• Establish and nurture mutually beneficialpartnerships with international agencies andorganisations based in British Columbia, topromote learning and research opportunitiesfor students and faculty.• Ensure that students have access to a range ofcourses and experiences that provideinformation and ideas about all parts ofthe world.A few examples serve to illustrate the types ofinitiatives that put flesh on the bones of theaspirations expressed above. The university hasput in place an International Student OrientationProgram. It includes an intensive 3-dayconference-style program, a reception service oftwo weeks duration at the airport and oncampus, and a half-day program specificallydesigned for graduate students. A planningcommittee made up of students and faculty fromacross the campus organises the program. Largenumbers of Canadian students serve asvolunteers in the program that is seen as asignificant learning opportunity for UBC studentsand a launching pad for the realisation of UBC’sinternational goals. A second program, theInternational Peer Program, offers an opportunityto engage students in meaningful cross-culturalexperiences. It matches new internationalstudents with experienced Canadian andInternational students known as <strong>senior</strong> peers.They are guided by trained student leaders whoassume responsibility for between 5-8 pairsof students.The China Programs of the Faculty of Commerceand Business, for instance, have been a majorforce for the internationalisation of the campus.This faculty is partnered with both academic andgovernment institutions including Shanghai JiaoTong <strong>University</strong> and the Ministry of Foreign Tradeand Economic Development. Program activitiesinclude a distinguished visitors program and aUnited Nations/International Trade CentreInitiative with four Chinese foreign tradeinstitutes. An economic development course forthe Federation of Canadian Municipalities’China Open Cities program has been offeredalong with customised executive programsin Chinese for <strong>senior</strong> business and governmentofficials.Recent changes in the Faculty of Land and FoodSystems (formerly the Faculty of Agriculture) serveto illustrate how units are integrating globalcitizenship into their core activities.
