iographieschoreographers Verve 07Rafael Bonachela: choreographer (repertory)Born in Barcelona, Spain, Rafael trained at the London Studio Centre and danced withLanonima Imperial before joining Rambert <strong>Dance</strong> Company in 1992. In April 2003, he wasappointed Rambert's Associate Choreographer. In September 2004 Rafael won the first everPlace Prize award for choreography, audience vote award and the New York Bloomberg choiceaward, for his piece E2 7SD.To date, he has choreographed nine works for Rambert dancers,including 21, a multi-media work produced in collaboration with Kylie Minogue's creative team.In 2002, Bonachela's career took an interesting turn when he was commissioned tochoreograph Kylie Minogue's routine at the Brit Awards and he went on to work extensively withMs Minogue, choreographing her award-winning Fever tour, the Top <strong>of</strong> the Pops Awards andthe World Music Awards. Rafael is co-choreographer for Kylie Minogue’s Show Girl world tourthat opened in March 2005 and has also choreographed her two recent music videos for thesingles I Believe In You and Giving You Up.Recent dance commissions include works for: Transitions <strong>Dance</strong> Company, English ChamberOrchestra, <strong>Dance</strong> Works Rotterdam, Hip, Union <strong>Dance</strong> Company, PROBE, GloucestershireYouth <strong>Dance</strong> Company, InToTo and VERVE. He has also created dance and film works for avariety <strong>of</strong> clients including MTV, The Kills, Primal Scream, Jaguar Automobiles, SiemensMobile and Hugo Boss.Kim Brandstrup: choreographer (new commission)Kim studied film at the University <strong>of</strong> Copenhagen and choreography under Nina Fonar<strong>of</strong>f at theLondon <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>School</strong> before establishing Arc <strong>Dance</strong> Company in 1985. He hascreated over twenty works for Arc including Saints and Shadows (Olivier Award nominee),Hamlet, Crime Fictions, Peer Gynt, Garden <strong>of</strong> Joys and Sorrows and The Return <strong>of</strong> Don Juan,featuring Irek Mukhamedov, Elegy, Brothers and most recently Hans Christian Andersen-TheAnatomy <strong>of</strong> a Storyteller commissioned by the Hans Christian Andersen Foundation 2005 andthe Royal Opera House.Kim's credits also include: Orfeo for London <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> Theatre, winner <strong>of</strong> the 1989Laurence Olivier Award for Most Outstanding Achievement In <strong>Dance</strong>, also performed by Arc<strong>Dance</strong> Company; Sacre Du Printemps (1991) for Geneva Ballet; Benjamin Britten’s Death In

In 2004 he was the choreographer for the film The Piano Tuner <strong>of</strong> Earthquakes,directed by the Quay Brothers.Kim has recently created a new version <strong>of</strong> Pulcinella for Birmingham Royal Ballet and codirectedthe world premiere <strong>of</strong> Debussy’s opera La Chute de la Maison Usher based on thenovel The Fall <strong>of</strong> the House <strong>of</strong> Usher by Edgar Allan Poe for the Bregenze Festival,Austria inAugust 2006.Shobana Jeyasingh: choreographer (new commission)Shobana Jeyasingh was born in Chennai, India. She founded Shobana Jeyasingh <strong>Dance</strong>Company in 1988. In addition to the works created for her own company, Shobana hasproduced work for theatre and television and site specific performances created for Greenwich<strong>Dance</strong> Agency (with live web cast from Bangalore, India), the café at Waterman’s Arts,Brentford (with DJ Mukul Patel) and for the City Hall, London. Other commissions includeFoliage Chorus for the opening <strong>of</strong> ArtsDepot in North London, for Sonia Sabre <strong>Dance</strong> Company,Random <strong>Dance</strong> Company, Anurekha Ghosh and the CANASIAN Festival in Toronto.Shobana was awarded an Arts Council Women in Arts project award (1993) inacknowledgement for her valuable contribution to the arts over the past decade and an MBE inJanuary 1995 for services to dance. She is a NESTA Dream Time Fellow.H<strong>of</strong>esh Shechter: choreographer (Verve repertory)H<strong>of</strong>esh trained at the Jerusalem Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dance</strong>. He has performed with Batsheva <strong>Dance</strong>Company, Israel and Jasmin Vardimon <strong>Dance</strong> Company, England. His choreographic debutwork Fragments (2004) premiered at Resolution! at The Place and toured internationallywinning the 3 rd Serge Diaghilev choreography competition in Poland. Cult (2004) reached thefinal <strong>of</strong> the first Place Prize 2004 and won the audience vote special prize. He was awarded theRobin Howard Foundation Commission for 2006 to create Uprising, to premier at The Place onJune 2006. Future work includes commissions for Ballet CeDeCe in Portugal and Scottish


<strong>Dance</strong> Theatre. Shechter was appointed the first Resident Artist at The Point, Eastleigh, in July2006.Fin Walker: choreographer (repertory)Fin Walker, winner <strong>of</strong> the major Jerwood Award, is an independent choreographer, performerand teacher, working nationally and internationally. She joined Extemporary <strong>Dance</strong> Theatre asa performer in 1988. Since then she has worked with the Jonathan Burrows Group, RosemaryButcher Company and Laurie Booth amongst other British based companies.Fin began making her own work pr<strong>of</strong>essionally in 1989 and began working with Ben Park(composer) in 1993. Walker <strong>Dance</strong> was established in 1998 and the name <strong>of</strong> the company waschanged in 2001 to Walker <strong>Dance</strong> Park Music to reflect the importance <strong>of</strong> the relationshipbetween the music and the dance. Fin and Ben have made a number <strong>of</strong> works both on theirown company and other companies and individuals, in Britain and Europe. Fin and Ben createdShadow with CandoCo <strong>Dance</strong> Company in 2002. More recent commissions include Me andYou for Phoenix <strong>Dance</strong> Theatre, a film entitled The Truth, for Ricochet <strong>Dance</strong> Productions,directed by Katrina McPherson, and a new work for Rambert <strong>Dance</strong> Company, Reflection,which premiered in Sheffield in 2004.Glenn Wilkinson: choreographer (Verve repertory)Born in Leeds in 1966, he trained at his mother and sister’s school Armley <strong>Dance</strong> Studio andthen at Intake High <strong>School</strong> with John Auty. After training at Rambert <strong>School</strong> between 1984 and1987 he then went on to join Rambert <strong>Dance</strong> Company where he stayed for 17 years until hisdeparture in May 2004. Whilst at Rambert Glenn choreographed four pieces that went into theirrepertoire. He has also worked with Matz Ek, Jiri Kylian, Glen Tetley, Ashley Page, LaurieBooth, Wayne Mc Gregor, Jeremy James, Ian Spink, Twyla Tharp, Raphael Bonachela, FinnWalker and Lindsay Kemp.


iographiesVerve 07Sarah Callow: dancerSarah was a freestyle disco dancer before joining a contemporary dancegroup near her home in Milton Keynes. She studied HND dance for one yearat New College Nottingham before joining the BPA (Hons) degree at NSCD.Sarah has also been involved in several projects including RODA and anumber <strong>of</strong> cross-arts collaborations.Kajza Ekberg: dancerKajza was born in Sweden and as a child trained in gymnastics. She studiedat the Salzburg Experimental Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> before joining NSCD, whereshe was awarded a first class honours degree. She has been involved withmany community platforms and worked on projects with choreographer LucaSilvestrini, and dance companies RODA and Action Point.Sarah Eldin: dancerSarah was introduced to contemporary dance through her involvement withthe Cornwall Youth <strong>Dance</strong> Company. She studied on the a BTEC NationalDiploma in <strong>Dance</strong> at St Austell College and then joined the BPA (Hons)degree at NSCD. Sarah is deeply committed to the development <strong>of</strong> herchoreographic work and was awarded the NSCD prize for CreativeAchievement. She has also been involved with the RODA dance project.Julia Mazowska: dancerJulia was born in Sweden and attended ballet classes from an early age.During her school education she developed a strong interest in science andwas awarded a place at university to continue her studies. However, shechose instead to follow her passion for dance by joining the BPA (Hons)degree course at NSCD.


Kelly McClelland: dancerKelly was born in Blackpool and from the age <strong>of</strong> three attended classes at herlocal dance school and became a Junior Associate <strong>of</strong> the Royal Ballet whenshe was eight years-old. Kelly joined the three-year BPA (Hons) programmeat NSCD in 2003, and gained a first class degree on completion <strong>of</strong> herstudies. She was also awarded the University <strong>of</strong> Leeds’ Armes Prize foroutstanding achievement.Simon Palmer: dancerSimon grew up in Essex where he developed a keen interest in performingarts. He started dance classes at the age <strong>of</strong> 16 and joined the BPA (Hons)degree in <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> at NSCD in 2002. After graduating Simonworked on a number <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional dance projects before joining Verve t<strong>of</strong>urther his pr<strong>of</strong>essional development as a dance artist.Newsha Parvardin: dancerAfter studying A-level dance Newsha moved to Leeds from London to train atNSCD. After successfully completing the one-year Foundation Course in<strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> she joined the <strong>School</strong>’s BPA (Hons) degreeprogramme. Newsha has participated in summer schools at the MarthaGraham Center, The Merce Cunningham Studio, The Ailey <strong>School</strong> and theToronto <strong>Dance</strong> Theatre.Phil Sanger: dancerAfter graduating from NSCD in 2002 with a BPA (Hons) in <strong>Contemporary</strong><strong>Dance</strong>, Philip and two friends formed a dance company which performed andtaught in schools and universities throughout the UK. More recently Philiphas worked on a number <strong>of</strong> site-specific performance projects.


Ira Siobhan: dancerIra originally planned on becoming a pr<strong>of</strong>essional basketball player but choseinstead to pursue a career in contemporary dance. After completing NSCD’sFoundation Course he joined the BPA (Hons) degree programme, achievinga first class award and receiving the <strong>School</strong>’s Graduation Performance Prize.He has been involved with the RODA dance project for the last two years, andhas recently been <strong>of</strong>fered work with Lloyd Newson.Jennifer Thornton: dancerJennifer’s interest in dance first started with rhythmic gymnastics in herhometown <strong>of</strong> Manchester. She achieved a BA (Hons) in <strong>Dance</strong> Studies fromLiverpool John Moores University before joining the third year <strong>of</strong> NSCD’s BPA(Hons) degree course. She has been involved in many performance projectsincluding a celebration gala marking the centenary <strong>of</strong> Liverpool’s AnglicanCathedral.Elena Zaino: dancerElena studied ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance in her native Italy prior tomoving to the UK. She studied on the BA (Hons) degree course at London<strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>School</strong> and has danced and choreographed for variouscompanies including a community project for Rawhead <strong>Dance</strong> Theatre.Elena’s interest in the use <strong>of</strong> film in the creation <strong>of</strong> dance performance hasinvolved her in directing and performing a dance video in Italy.

ox <strong>of</strong>fice notesVerve 07What is Verve?Verve is the graduate performance company <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong>.In 2007 the company comprises eleven dancers who will tour to 20+ venues in the UK andEurope. The <strong>School</strong> is one <strong>of</strong> the UK’s leading conservatoire dance schools and <strong>of</strong>fers full timecourses in contemporary dance at foundation, degree and graduate diploma levels.What will be performed?Verve performs contemporary dance work created by leading choreographers.
