Iwas inspired by his suggestion that weunderstand it by approaching it, and that weapproach it from any direction. Working closelywith the dancers, the work was createdfollowing a process <strong>of</strong> self-observation andobservation <strong>of</strong> the others in the studio.Through this process the dancers becameaware <strong>of</strong> their own private psychological andphysical events, imagining how it is forothers to experience similar states, releasingempathy.Temporal Waltzes- Michael SchumacherInspired by tales <strong>of</strong> space and time travel,Temporal Waltzes is a fragmented journey inwhich the dancers reveal chapters <strong>of</strong> a storythat may or may not have happened in thepast or future. BIOGRAPHIES:DANCERS- Elisabeth ConnorOriginally from Darlington,Elisabeth took part in the<strong>Dance</strong> City Linbury andAcademy programmes andtoured with the <strong>Northern</strong>Youth <strong>Dance</strong> Company. Shethen trained at NSCD, graduating with a BPA(Hons) in <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong>. Majoring inChoreography, her work has been performed atshowcases in Leeds and York. Elisabeth hasworked with choreographers including HenriettaHale, Neville Campbell and Andile Sotiya.- Natalie Duffield MooreOriginally from Leicestershire,Natalie trained with the RoyalBallet Senior Associates2005-06 before going toRambert <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Ballet and<strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong>,graduating with a first class degree in 2009. Herperformance experience includes working withRambert <strong>Dance</strong> Company on A Linha Curva byItzik Galili and Stand and Stare by Darshan SinghBhuller. She has worked with<strong>Dance</strong> Theatre Raatikko, touring "KurkistaKulisseihin" by Marja Korhola, in Finland. In 2008Elina moved to England to study at NSCD. Insummer 2009 she completed a BSc inEnvironmental Science and Policy from theUniversity <strong>of</strong> Helsinki.- Janice KeithOriginally from Peterhead,Scotland, Janice spent eightyears <strong>of</strong> her childhood as acompetitive rhythmic gymnast,also competing andperforming as a highlanddancer in the Edinburgh Tattoo and inSwitzerland. Joining Elevate Youth <strong>Dance</strong>Company in Aberdeen led her to train at theScottish <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong>. Shecompleted her degree at NSCD, where sheworked with Kwesi Johnson and Henrietta Hale.- David MichelOriginally from Winchester,David began dancing at alocal theatre. In 2009 hegained a BPA (Hons) degreein <strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> fromNSCD. Whilst at NSCD heparticipated in workshops with Richard Alston andcompany residencies with Shobana Jeyasinghand H<strong>of</strong>esh Shechter. He also worked withchoreographers Kwesi Johnson and AntoniaGrove and performed in numerous studentchoreographies and platforms, including theLaban showcase.13


BIOGRAPHIES:DANCERS cont.- Letty MitchellOriginally from London, Lettystudied at the BRIT <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong>Performing Arts and was amember <strong>of</strong> Laban Youth<strong>Dance</strong> Company. She trainedat Laban, graduating in 2009with a first class BA (Hons) in <strong>Dance</strong> Theatre.During this time, Letty worked withchoreographers Shobana Jeyasingh, KerryNicholls and Miranda Collard and participated in astudent exchange with the Balettakademien<strong>School</strong> in Stockholm.- Gemma RileyGrowing up in the LakeDistrict, Gemma discoveredcontemporary dance throughtaking GCSE and A-levelcourses at school, where shehad the opportunity to performin Laban’s Youth Showcase. Her love <strong>of</strong>contemporary dance lead Gemma to NSCD,where she gained a BPA (Hons) in <strong>Contemporary</strong><strong>Dance</strong>, graduating in 2009. During her studiesshe worked with choreographers Gavin Coward,Katryn Jackson, Andile Sotiya and HenriettaHale.BIOGRAPHIES:CHOREOGRAPHERS- Laïla DialloCanadian born choreographer Laïla Diallo firstcame to prominence as a dancer with WayneMcGregor’s Random <strong>Dance</strong>. Her choreographicworks include Sense <strong>of</strong> Self, created with MélanieDemers; the solos waiting fleeing, Out <strong>of</strong> sight inthe direction <strong>of</strong> my body, The Wayside andImprint; as well as Between the Shingle and theDune, in collaboration with Theo Clinkard. Recentcommissions include Five for Swerve <strong>Dance</strong>Theatre and on the feeling <strong>of</strong> being together formapdance. Laïla also regularly provideschoreography and movement direction for theatreand opera. Laïla was awarded a RayneFellowship for Choreographers in 2006, and is anAssociate Artist <strong>of</strong> Arnolfini, Swindon <strong>Dance</strong> andthe Royal Opera House.- Luis Lara Malvacías- Kassie StarkeyKassie began dancing atschool in Birmingham. Shewent on to study at Laban,London, gaining a first classhonours degree in 2009.During her studies she workedwith Kerry Nicholls and Tom Dale. She presentedher own choreography at Laban's degreeperformance 2009 and performed with ShobanaJeyasingh in the 2008 Olympic Festival outside StPauls Cathedral, London.- Lucy StarkeyOriginally from Preston,Lancashire, Lucy tourednationally with Ludus Youth<strong>Dance</strong> Company 2002-2006.She trained at London<strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong> <strong>School</strong>,gaining a first class BA (Hons) degree in<strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong>. Whilst at LCDS sheperformed works by Richard Alston, Jan DeSchynkel, Lorena Randi and Rick Nodine; andperformed in Frauke Requardt's work for the Backto Front Gala at Sadler’s Wells.Born in Venezuela, Luis Lara Malvacías is achoreographer, dancer, dance teacher, designerand visual artist. A graduate <strong>of</strong> The InstitutoSuperior de Danza in Caracas, Venezuela, heperformed with Espacio Alterno in work by DavidZambrano and Jeremy Nelson, amongst others.Malvacías’ choreographic work has beenpresented in the USA, Canada, South America,Europe and Japan. He has been Artist inResidence at Movement Research and <strong>Dance</strong>New Amsterdam. His commissions for othercompanies include Espacio Alterno, GothamGroup in New York, and Perypezye Urbane inItaly. Malvacías provided choreography for thefilm Diega and has taught at several major danceschools across the USA, South America andEurope. BIOGRAPHIES:CHOREOGRAPHERS cont.- Michael Schumacher- David ZambranoMichael Schumacher is a performing artist withroots in classical and modern dance. He trainedat the Juilliard <strong>School</strong>, New York and currentlyresides in Amsterdam. He has been a member <strong>of</strong>several groundbreaking companies, includingBallet Frankfurt and Twyla Tharp <strong>Dance</strong>. As achoreographer, Schumacher has created work forBallet Frankfurt, Netherlands <strong>Dance</strong> Theater IIIand Dutch National Ballet. As a dancer,choreographer, and teacher, Schumacher hasdeveloped a unique approach to the discipline <strong>of</strong>improvisation. Music is a fundamental element <strong>of</strong>his process, and he has collaborated with manypioneering musicians. Schumacher recentlyreceived two prestigious awards in theNetherlands for his achievements in dance: theGolden Swan and the Jiri Kylian Ring.- Kathinka WalterFor over 20 years, David Zambrano has been amonumental figure in the international dancecommunity, and his passion for cultural exchangecontinues to influence his work. Living andmaking work in Amsterdam and teaching/performing internationally, Zambrano is anambassador and liaison across many borders,bringing together artists from all over the planetfor his projects.An inspiring teacher, thrilling performer, andinnovative choreographer, Zambrano hascontributed generously to the field <strong>of</strong> dance inways that have influenced many and impactedthe dance world from several angles. Hisdevelopment <strong>of</strong> the "Flying Low" and "PassingThrough" techniques are among his recentinnovations that have helped to leadimprovisational dance into an exciting future.Many <strong>of</strong> his projects have continuously influencedZambrano’s pedagogic methods, keeping themfresh and interesting for students from around theglobe.Kathinka trained at <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Contemporary</strong> <strong>Dance</strong>, gained an MA (Distinction)in Choreography from London <strong>Contemporary</strong><strong>Dance</strong> <strong>School</strong> and has recently begun a practiseledPhD at Leeds University. She hascollaborated with, amongst others, Felix Ruckert,Post Theater and Festland e.V. She currentlyteaches choreography at NSCD and since 2007has produced a series <strong>of</strong> mixed mediaperformance installations, presented in Englandand Germany. Kathinka has been awarded a LisaUllman travelling award (2006), funding from ArtsCouncil England for various choreographicprojects, and the CDD scholarship (2004). In2009 she was selected for Yorkshire <strong>Dance</strong>’sLIFT programme.
