It is a concept that refers both to our uniqueness as <strong>in</strong>dividualsand to our sense of belong<strong>in</strong>g or identification with<strong>in</strong> a group orgroups.<strong>Diversity</strong> refers to the ways <strong>in</strong> which we differ from each other.Some of these differences may be visible (e.g., race, ethnicity,gender, age, ability), while others are less visible (e.g., culture,ancestry, language, religious beliefs, sexual orientation,socioeconomic background).Honour<strong>in</strong>g diversity is based on the pr<strong>in</strong>ciple that if these differencesare acknowledged and utilized <strong>in</strong> a positive way, it is of benefit tothe quality of our learn<strong>in</strong>g and work<strong>in</strong>g environments.Goals or purposes for <strong>Diversity</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude:Embrac<strong>in</strong>g diversity is animportant aspect of liv<strong>in</strong>gand learn<strong>in</strong>g.• tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to account the different beliefs, customs, practices,languages, behaviours and physical differences of <strong>in</strong>dividualsand cultural groups• encourag<strong>in</strong>g understand<strong>in</strong>g, acceptance, mutual respect and<strong>in</strong>clusion, <strong>in</strong> order to make school communities and society asa whole more equitable for all people<strong>Diversity</strong> is <strong>in</strong>itially aboutrecogniz<strong>in</strong>g, and ultimatelyabout valu<strong>in</strong>g, difference asa resource and a reality ofeveryday life.While there is no legislation that refers specifically to diversity,there are moral and legal, human resource, and f<strong>in</strong>ancial reasons forhonour<strong>in</strong>g diversity and promot<strong>in</strong>g human rights.Ethical and legal pr<strong>in</strong>ciples are based with<strong>in</strong> legislation as follows:• The diversity of people is acknowledged and valued (CanadianCharter of Rights and Freedoms, 1982; and the <strong>BC</strong> MulticulturalismAct, 1993).• The dignity of people, as well as protection from harm, is<strong>in</strong>tended to be preserved (Canadian Charter of Rights andFreedoms; <strong>BC</strong> Human Rights Code, 1997).• Fair and equitable treatment should be secured for all people(<strong>BC</strong> Human Rights Code, 1997; Employment <strong>Equity</strong> Act, 1996).<strong>BC</strong> M<strong>in</strong>istry of Education 7
